Canon 550d vs GH1

Hey Docrjay, I in no way meant this to be directed towards you. I want to welcome you to the forum and encourage you discuss your thoughts and opinions. And sorry to everyone if it did come off harsh. My only thing is that I used to be an avid DVX'er and that forum was almost exclusively talk about the DVX and what it could do, and how it could be done. Rarely were there comparisons to Xl2 and GL2 and the like, there were, but rarely. Maybe that's because of how long the DVX had been around.

In any event, again docrjay I in no way meant to insult you or say your topic of question isn't valid, I just think that maybe it could go in another sub forum. Where people who want to see comparison, advantages disadvantages, etc that can help them decide what they want to get. To me this section should be for people discussing how best to utilize the GH1, not bashing it or saying the 7D is better et. al. (not that you were)

With everyone coming out with a new camera every two days it seems, I just worry that these boards will become less informational and more heresay pissing matches is all. A lot of people who comment on why the GH1 is crap or the 7D is junk have never used either!

Again sorry to everyone, these convos do have merit, just want to keep the GH1 section about how to use the GH1 and what works well with it etc, not why can't the GH1 do this or be this.

Appreciate the reply sir. Looking forward to learning more about the GH1.

If the video on it is the same as the 7D, then it will easily be better than the GH1.

How? Even on 7D the video isn't better than GH1.

You guys might as well start selling off your GH1's now, cause it hits next month.

Fat chance, I don't particularly like having pure green and purple added to my images by a dodgy re-scaling method. But I do like having a active viewfinder in video mode so I can hold the camera in a both steady and ergonomic way when filming.

There are obviously advantages and disadvantages to both. I got a GH1 before the 7D was announced, a friend of mine got the 7D not long afterwards. I've shot with both; under the right conditions I slightly prefer the GH1's image BUT under many (particularly uncontrolled) conditions, the 7D would be my choice. And I'm pretty open to using one of the custom curves on the 7D and getting an initial image I'm happier with (even neutral with zeroed out contrast is a bit too much for my taste).

I'll strongly consider getting a 550D if the video isn't any worse than the 7D, just because there are definitely situations where it would be a tremendous asset.

I think the 7D wins in extreme under-lit situations where the GH1 starts to show banding, also high motion scenarios, and for still photography. That's it. The GH1 has in some ways a cleaner, more cinematic look, with great lens options and ergonomics. The 7D is built like a tank, the GH1 not so much. I think they make a good team, but both have their strengths and weaknesses. Anyone who has used both tends to say the same thing.
Indeed.

E. :-)

+1. there's dvxuser news section for these kind of topics. these threads generally get closed down eventually because the flame wars. and i really don't mind them if they weren't in this section. i only go the gh1 and market place and these "just announced, rumor, compare this" kind of threads happen too often.

i see t2i as
something cheaper
great lens selection
better codec
(which are big pluses)

other than that.. gh1 is better at other things

Do you think that this will cause Panasonic to sell the GH1 body or cut the price of the GH1 w/lens? A $900 camera w/lens is difficult to compete against.

The price of the GH1 keeps dropping. New it's now 1189. A 60 dollar drop from less than a month ago. So who knows how far they are willing to go.

I am pretty sure the t2i is basically exactly the same as the 7d, but smaller and a lower fps for shooting raw photos...

I sold my GH 1 as well to either get a t2i and or GH2 (not another gh 1 lol)

i can't believe people are giving up on the GH1 so quickly...

Seriously. Think about it, you don't want to keep buying and your selling your cameras just because the one you have has been barely outdone.

If the GH1 score's a 6/10, that makes the t2i a 7/10, at best. I'd wait for what Panasonic and Nikon come out with next, hoping that it will be MUCH better than the GH1, not slightly.

- better audio options (AGC disable, Audio Meter, and Headphone Jack)
- improved codec
- HDMI out whiling filming
- Improved AF features while filming

I honestly think we're running out of things to ask of our cameras and can start to turn our attentions to all the other aspects (lighting, audio, acting, directing, writing, editing etc.)

Agree 100%

yeah man, we all know what we want, wish lists, etc.

shoot shoot shoot....

if you have to OWN equipment vs. renting and your THAT picky, then RENT ...and for God's sake, don't clutter up bandwith here with wish lists. Rent what you want if your vision is just so revolutionary that it requires things that a $1500 camera can't provide.
