Canon 550D Full HD video

So you think the T2i owners should have a new subforum simply because you cannot deal with the questions? From what I've seen, a lot of T2i video questions will have the same answers as the 7D. That alone would make one forum for both cameras a logical choice.

Take a look at RedUser, or Cinematography. How organized it is. You don't see quality thoughtful discussion mixed in with "how do I record pictures?" or "how do I change aperture?"

So you think that most of the T2i users on this forum will be like that? Because its so cheap, its users surely must be novices.

To be fair, REDuser is also a board about one single camera that has been in use for about two and a half years now. At the beginning there were plenty of such questions - just go back in the archives and take a peek. I've seen a couple "what lighting kit should I get on a budget" and the "first time shooting RED, tell me everything I need to know so I don't mess up" posts.

When something new happens (as with the release of REDCINE-X) people always ask simple questions because everything is new. While they are basic questions, they really should only have to be asked once. Perhaps we need a good DSLR general FAQ, as well as separate 7D, 5D, and t2i FAQs which address individual differences.

I can only imagine what REDuser is going to become when a bunch of new people start shooting on Scarlet for the first time and posting .R3ds for the first time. Hopefully now people understand it isn't just another video camera.

That being said, the 7D shouldn't have been lumped in with the 5D. The t2i shouldn't be lumped in with the 7D. While there are certainly overlaps in knowledge, nothing prevents anyone from reading and learning what has been posted on any forum here - 5D, 7D, HVX, etc.

All? of course not. I'm taking history. Look back in September and October on these forums, same thing. It's new-camera-don't-want-to-read-the-manual fever.

I didn't say all. By that logic, the HVX200/A/HPX170/HPX170 should all have subforums.

Hey guys. Move the fight to here: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=199748

:)

These are valid points. Let's just get this discussion with us all as a community. I'm telling you that Jason Ramsey is asking the EXACT SAME QUESTIONS....so let's all share perspectives to get a muli-dimensional view.

Hey Babu ... and can you confirm 1/3rd ISO stops for video?
(I don't shoot stills often so video is my only concern here)
The problem with the T1i is that to get to the ISO increments its by using the exposure compensation dial. So it's very tricky to do without manual controls. Once you are able to manually control the video it's very easy to do the 1/3 increments by dialing the exposure compensation back one step or two for the desired ISO setting.

I'm still not sure how to do this. I tried to do it on a T1i on display and I couldn't get it to work. Exposure compensation only works in P/A/S modes right? So whats to stop it from adjusting shutter speed or aperture instead of ISO? I have a feeling even if its possible its probably not worth the effort.

Wow ... sounds complex ... but its hard to tell without having one in front of me. Reminds me of the old phone glow/exposure lock trick from the canon vixia's HV30 HF100 days.
Do-able, but not something you want to mess with while on a paid gig.

I was tempted to flip my 7D so less money is tied up in a depreciating camera ... but now I'm not so sure.

It's very frustrating to get it to work in video mode. But it can be done. You have to disable the aperture. After that is disable by either using nikon lens or the twist technique you lock the exposure. Once exposure is locked you can dial in desired exposure compensation. In which case because you don't have manual controls you can only get 1250 from 1600 and 125 from 100. It's not even worth trying on the T1i for video in my opinion. For photos it's a heck of a lot easier.

I apologise. What I should have written was

'dpreview.com lists the specs for the T2i, T1i and the xSi as having 1 stop increments. 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400'

so what you are now saying is that dpreview have their specs wrong for all 3 cameras?

edit: just saw m olsens post. So the canon website is wrong too?

So I backed up my statement with screenshots from dpreview.

Can you backup your pics you posted by telling us if these were shot by you?

If these are shot by you can you definitely confirm that when shooting video you can select ISO at 1/3rd stop increments?

I added two attachments of screenshots from dpreview to my earlier post

There is a green asterisk, but it indicates what has changed since the last model

Alright. First of all, are you questioning the validity of the EXIF-data? It is there.
If you browse through this site, you see a lot of pictures in the 1/3 or 1/2 increment steps.

The Canon T1i does not have manual controls in video.

The dpreview and even the Canon website are not wrong, but that doesn't make your statement right. They have not clarified what they mean.
You have misinterpreted your own screenshots. It says that the 550D has auto-ISO from 100-6400, while the previous model (500D) has 100-1600. The second asterisk is that the 500D has a "real" 6400 mode while the 500D has the H1 expansion.

I am giving you concrete evidence, pictures you can look at and examine. Now I know you probably have a 7D and as others on this forum, try to find and look for any information to justify your own purchase, but you have to be more critical to your sources.

I don't even know what EXIF-data is. Make fun of me. I am not a photographer. :lipsrseal If the T2i can shoot all the ISO settings that the 7D can, cool...we were just feeling our way along.

That'll be cool if the T2i matches the 7D in video quality and functions. I rode the 7D wave that I hear may have iced 5D owners, why shouldn't others ride the T2i wave? Makes sense. It just made the honeymoon all that much shorter for us that got the 7D. It was realeased what? End of September? Excuse our search for differences with the T2i, it is only natural. For myself, this is my first time I've been iPhoned. It is kind of like whenever new computer specs come out on Macbook Pros. I check my system against them to see how I'm hanging with my 2 year old system. Given that quad cores aren't in MBPs yet, I'm feeling pretty good about my 2.4ghz dual-core. There is a sort of air of frugality and efficiency that I enjoy where I feel like I'm using equipment that is effective in cost and function. That is sort of the fundamental basis of choosing a DSLR for video/film production right? I understand that getting into this game means that newer and cheaper stuff always comes....but this DSLR thing seems to be extra fast and picking up speed.

Waaahhh.....

Exif-data are just metadata embedded in the images from the camera. States almost everything about the picture taken. I have no idea on how you check it on a mac, but in Windows you just rightclick, click on properties and then information.

Wow...I just got here.

Where's the love in this thread..??

Memo: New Cameras Bring Nothing But Hate

To those of you who have purchased a camera in the DSLR category within the last 6 months (Canon EOS 5D MkII, 7D, 1D MkIV, Nikon D300, D3s, Pentax K7) - be advised a new camera has been released with similar features at a very low price point. In fact, it is essentially guaranteed to be about half as much as your current product's MSRP and may be a little as 15% of its MSRP. While it may seem senseless, as your current purchase undoubtedly continues to function as it originally did, despite the announcement, you should be enraged. It should be your mission to devalue and debase not only these new cameras which have seemingly shamed your recent purchases, but also the company which produces them (regardless of whether that same company created your camera), and perhaps more importantly, the future customers of the product. These people are your enemies who seek to undermine you by buying a new, cheaper product that performs similarly to yours. Whenever possible make every attempt to verbally destroy them and the efficacy of talents, capabilities, prior work, and equipment (regardless of whether or not it is the same as yours...they won't know that!).

To those of you who are anticipating purchasing the new Canon t2i. Remember that there are more expensive cameras that offer essentially the same features. Now, really, who would purchase such a thing? Surely all of those who own DSLRS purchased prior to the release of the t2i are troglodytes and must be treated as such. Remember, these are not intelligent people, so they will argue seemingly in circles despite logic or reason. It may, in fact, be best to make a single dismissive statement regarding their intellectual, moral, and physical insufficiencies and then forget about them and their ancient technology.

Thank you for your time.

Right. Hehe. My original question of what the images showed certainly exposed me as a non-photographer.

Classic!

Spot on Michael. Now all of you, go watch the opening ceremony of the Olympics.

I just heard about young Nodar Kumaritashvili's death. Wow.... it would be quite difficult for me to compete after hearing news like that. My thoughts are with his family.

Anyways..Michael Olsen... good points.
