Specifications wise, it appears to be very close. Really, the only big difference is that it doesn't look like the camera offers the 1/3 ISO settings (160, 320, etc.) that the 7D does.

Video quality wise...well, who can say. What we have seen on the internet (run through who knows what encoding) seems to look pretty close to the 7D. I doubt I would be able to tell the difference. Some people are seeing some banding that the 7D doesn't seem to have. And there are also questions about how well the codec will hold up to motion (though it looks to be same as the 7D?)

We'll really know when some people (Bloom, Maschwitz, Dan, Laforet) get their hands on it, we'll know because they can tell us what the actual footage looks like, not the internet encoded for mass distribution video looks like. (Of course, one could argue that if that's your intended distribution method, that's all you need to know...)

If the T2i video ends up being really close the 7D (both quality and usage), wouldn't it makes sense to keep both cameras in the same sub forum?

A photo camera that doesn't do 1/3 iso steps?
I highly doubt that.

He's right, none of the canon rebels do 1/3rd steps and this is the main reason I think I will pass on the t2i

I love how people on this forum constantly make blatant statements as "facts" without sources to back it up. :)
Here you go, a couple of images from the 500D/T1i in 125, 250, 320, 500, 640 and 1250.

What am I looking for with those photos besides the filename?

From the CanonEOS.com website, here is what I found on the T2i.
http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/c...ategoryid=139&modelid=19943#ModelTechSpecsAct

ISO Speed: ISO 100~6400 (in 1-stop increments), H: 12800

Exposure Compensation: Manual: ±5 stops in 1/3- or 1/2-stop increments (can be combined with AEB)

I don't know what exposure compensation is exactly, but the ISO speed thing says 1 stop increments?

Hope anyone didn't take what I said as fact...I did my best to add as many vague references as possible to point out the idea that - just as with the 7D - we won't really know what it can and can't do until people can hold and test the thing.

Oh! I get to bust a rampant evil rumor now. Here's an image from the T2i specs page on the Canon site:

I'll let you make your own conclusions from that!

I apologise. What I should have written was

'dpreview.com lists the specs for the T2i, T1i and the xSi as having 1 stop increments. 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200, 6400'

so what you are now saying is that dpreview have their specs wrong for all 3 cameras?

edit: just saw m olsens post. So the canon website is wrong too?

I hope to crist not. We're still dealing with waves of questions that can be solved by a quick read in the manual. It's lessened a bit over the last 5 months thankfully, but I don't know if I can deal with it all over again.

Unless I'm mistaken (which I very well may be) the bit of info I posted from Canon essentially says that the camera will automatically adjust ISO in 1-stop increments. But manual adjustment ("Exposure Compensation") can be done in 1-stop, 1/2-stop, and 1/3-stop increments.

If this is true, it explains one reason the 7D is more expensive than the T2i - it's smarter, and can automatically select from a larger range of ISOs to get a better "auto" picture.

Again, I may be wrong, but that's how I read it.

I'm sure the specs on websites like dpreview, b and h etc are all copied off eachother. I was relying on dpreview and I interpreted it as 1 stop increments. I have a friend with a xsi and I can give him a call tonight to find out for sure.

When i'm shooting with AIS on my 7D I'm using 1/3 stop iso all the time because I want to maintain 180 degree shutter. I could probably work around 1 stop increments by putting the lens aperture ring between fstops. But there is no way this would work on any lens where aperture in controlled from the camera and that includes all IS zooms. So not having 1/3rd stops is huge.

attached is a screenshot from dpreview.com

I didn't think anyone used Auto-ISO in video mode? If you do, this definitely matters. If you select ISO manually, I don't think it will be any different than the 7D.

I added two attachments of screenshots from dpreview to my earlier post

There is a green asterisk, but it indicates what has changed since the last model

So I backed up my statement with screenshots from dpreview.

Can you backup your pics you posted by telling us if these were shot by you?

If these are shot by you can you definitely confirm that when shooting video you can select ISO at 1/3rd stop increments?

So you think the T2i owners should have a new subforum simply because you cannot deal with the questions? From what I've seen, a lot of T2i video questions will have the same answers as the 7D. That alone would make one forum for both cameras a logical choice.

I also have a T1i and can get the incremental ISO numbers as the 7D. The pics in the rar files state the ISOs in the exif info. They go from 125-1250 in those examples.

Hey Babu ... and can you confirm 1/3rd ISO stops for video?
(I don't shoot stills often so video is my only concern here)
