1DC: Canon 1Dx mkII to shoot 4k video, 5D mkIV not so much. Also: C100 4k witin 18 months?

Well, they already put it in a $2000 camera, the XC10 and their 8K camera is announced, so there you go.

If Canon does not put 4K into the 5D Mark IV or does not announce a 5D C with it, they could at least put DCI 2K in it, together with log gamma.
Sorry I should have say DSLR instead of camera. There are plenty of 4k camcorder to choose from at that price and quality
I am in the queue for the USRA 4.6K already, if Canon is selling a 6K or 8K camera in the 1D form factor will go buy it immediately. I will worry about buying a newer Mac pro and new storage card for the 6k files later.

Its so simple Canon...
- C100Mk2 3000usd
- C100Mk2 with 4K upgrade firmware 5000-6000usd
1080p 50mp like the c300 mark1 and 100p-120p 10bits 4.2.2
4k 100mb 8bits 4.2.0 50p or just 25p

Or just buy a FS5 and give up the waiting...
The only problem is AF performance on the FS5 or FS7 is not as good as the C100 MK2 or the A7R2 and many other 4K camcorders. Plus it is made in China, One famous Phrase from Jackie Chan said things made in China will usually explode. ( you see all these hover board going into flames)

Yes is true, the AF performance on the C100 its great.
And i dont see any picprofile identical to the CP8 WD in the sony fs7-fs5 with great colors and skin tones.

Made in china? anything with a tag "not made in china" its so so rare.

The latest rumors have 1D X MKII announced soon (January CES or February CP+) and 5D MK IV prior to the NAB'16 in April. 1D X MKII is fairly certain for 4K. 5D MKIV might end up being split into two different models - a more stills oriented 5Ds/r (in an updated body) with a high MPX count sensor and more video geared 5D MKIV (or 5D C) that's closer to A7SII in specs (low light performance with 18 MPX full frame and 4K). In that regard, the specs for 5D MKIV might have changed a bit due to what's happening on the market with A7R/SII, D5, Leica SL, etc.

If they do 4K 60p with the new codec and a bit better lowlight performance I am sold. I love the codec quality/size wise. The XC10 Files are very gradable.

what worries me though is that none of the rumors speak of DPAF. This the THE single feature Canon is ahead of all the competitors... I hope Canon execs arent as stupid as they normally are and drop it because "Pro Photogs" dont need it...:undecided

I am waiting for Canon's answer. Need a camera in the DSLR form factor with 4K and currently renting 1DC. Am not keen on the mirrorless bodies. Hopefully Canon will launch the successor to the 1DX/1DC and include DPAF which is as good as C300 Mark II.

Am currently in a project for the next two months and for this my C300 is fine. So I am holding on to my cash and will only buy the C300 II when my project demands it.

Im right there with you. I feel like I have been waiting on this for waaaay too long. At this point I am waiting just to satisfy my curiosity. It will be very interesting to see if Canon decides to jump in the race or bail out. I don't expect much from them....but...if they do happen to include the DPAF of the C300II in there and some flavor of 4K....even if its best recorded externally...I would probably jump on it.

I would even accept over cranking in HD only...really for me...at a minimum its just these 2 features I am interested in (along with Canon's color science).

Lots of rumors are trickling out in all the usual places. The announcement is expected between now - yes, this very second - or CP+ in late February.

Since the 1DC can record internal 4K on just CF cards, with the new generation of camera using Cfast 4K 60fps will be a piece of cake .

I am more worry about if they will put DPAF on the new cameras

If the next 1D C have 4K60p + DPAF + D5 high ISO. it will stay on the top for another few years.

All these are not difficult for Canon technically. Price I could afford the 1DC 3 years ago I can sure afford one.

Just be quick before I waste my money on buying other Sony or Nikon Gear

Oh just for info , My fried tested the LVAF on the D5, it is not anything better than the A7s or 1DC

DPAF inclusion is my worry to. This is a killer feature even if the "only" include the c100mk2 version of it ( Canon, are you hearing? You can still barrier the C300 mk2, you dont have to cripple the 1DXmk2 totally)

Have owned and operated a 1DC for 3 years now. Great camera, but I generally dislike the DSLR format, i.e. lack of pro audio, ND's, viewfinder etc. Have been very tempted to pick up a C100 MK II for some of our run-&-gun work, but I just can't justify at this point in time purchasing a camera that does not have 4K. Do I shoot a lot of 4K now on my 1DC? Not really, but it's fantastic when you need it. Any new camera for pro work from this point forward needs to have 4K to future proof work ahead. Prefer Canon color science out of the camera when you don't always have time to color in post. Like others have said, give me a C100 MK II with 4K and a codec at least as good as a Sony FS5 and I would order one today. But for now, I wait (looking at you Canon).

Let the Sony users scream themselves blue in the face over the FS5 codec. What you want is Canon's own codec from the XC10. 305Mbit intra frame 422 to CFast 2.0.

A C100 mkIII with that codec in 4k with the latest gen sensor (C300 mkII, 1Dx mkII)… that would fly off the shelves. Fly.

Especially if it carries the DPAF. Add 10bit out via HDMI would be great as well. Give it a "solid" true 13 stops would be enough for me. But I would love to see this in the 5dMk4 or 5Dc (whatever they want to call it).

You've read the rumors of Raw at less than 24 fps (for stills off video), so one wonders if some form of the compressed internal Raw might be implemented. Now, that would fly in the face of the widely spread self-crippling.

BTW, those guys at CR are so photo geared, someone (from Zürich) needs to keep them abreast of the video world.

Rumors claim 15, a la C300 MKII. Which could mean that 1D X MKII also has a dual sensor readout.

Its 4K is likely to be in s35 crop too.

I hope the 1DXII is a better video camera than the 5DMmkIV. Or I wish both would be announced at the same time.

Yes, the CR1 says Canon is looking into implementing 4k raw in shorts bursts in less than standard video frame rates.

To me, this sounds like shooting a 4k 1:1 pixel crop into a rolling buffer. At the point of pressing the shutter button, the camera saves the individual frames as raw to the memory card. Possibly with an option to save X seconds worth of frames prior OR after pressing the shutter button. It's normal raw, not compressed, but at the 4k frame size. So not the 22MP full size.

A benefit would be not wasting actuations, even if you want many frames. A downside is you end up with 8.8MP raw files and not 22MP.

In essence, it's taking the frame grab concept of the 1Dc video stream, but you'll end up with fewer frames (not quite 25), but at a higher quality—raw.

At this point I don't see much relevance to the 1Dx mkII's video function, with the notable exception of this hinting at a substantial buffer size. If the buffer is big, and the sensor readout quick, Canon could consider some flavour of slow motion similar to the FS5. Not constant to media—but into a buffer for a number of seconds and then subsequent readout to media.

This would also be a nice compromise and differentiation to the C300 mkII with its constant 120fps recording capability.

Some speculate this would be a sports function, but I'd say it's more of a portrait function for wedding, couples or children photographers wanting to capture an honest expression in that decisive moment under somewhat controlled circumstances. But of course, the functionality would be just that—another mode to use as you, the photographer/videographer, sees fit.

I was wondering, wouldn't it make sense to ship the 1DXII around the same time as the new Nikons or does Canon simply not view them as competition?

D5 is 95% stills geared (until someone hacks the 3-min 4K recording limit). 1D X MKII seems to be 50/50. If so, its stills side will definitely be in competition with Nikon. On video, 1D C is still better than the new Nikon models. The big question here is how much Canon wants to cripple it as not to compete with C300 MKII. My guess is that it won't have Raw out via SDI but should have a 10-bit HDMI out and the 305 Mbps internal to CFast 2.0 cards. It should also have the dual pixel auto focus, what with it being a top sports camera and all.

PS. Chances are its 4K will be center crop 1:1 too. No oversampling.
