1DC: Canon 1DC woes

One can't sell a DSLR style camera for $13,000 these days. (aside of C300 MKII but I digress) If - BIG IF - Canon comes out with 1D C MKII, it'll be pretty close to what Andree described - something based on 1D X MKII, C-log, better codec and 4K with less of a crop. Canon can obviously put the same camera into a C100 style body also.

8K with Dual Pixel AF. It would be a cool camera. Am wondering the file sizes. Even though they make dual CFast 2.0 card slots, it would guzzle memory like crazy. So may be SSD? And what would be the price?

$24,999

And also - do you guys have this issue?: in c-log, when in video mode, neither AF works. Thoughts?

No AF in C-Log...#1 complaint about the camera.

Honestly, I usually use cine glass so the fact that it won't AF in CLog is irrelevant. Takes me back to the point of get whatever has the features you need. The GH5 has some STUNNING images, if you like it better, go for it. For me, the 1dc is weather proof, solid, can be dropped, never freaks out on me - the gh5, not quite as much. Both amazing cameras and the fact that a 1dc can be had for $3k is amazing to me, it's a steal. Too m any of us get lost in the stats - just pick up the camera and look at the image you get straight off the card - jaw dropping. So yeah, it has a lot of things that make it a pain, but what's your priority and what do you want/need to make the content you want? That's all that matters. A few extra pixels, a little less noise - what tool is going to work best for you?

Seems like the smartest/most reasonable thing for Canon to do is just release a paid Clog upgrade for the 1DX II ala Vlog for the GH4 en lieu of a 1DC II. Of course that will never happen.

Canon gives the people what they want every 10 years or so. Let's see...when did the 5D Mark II get the 24p update?

Canon is not keen on including the c-log in the 1DXII. c-log is only for cameras branded as cinema cameras. 1DXII has 4k 50/60p which the C300 Mark II doesn't have. They want some separation. They are still selling the 1DC.

When Sony freely includes its s-log in the cameras, it is difficult for Canon to restrict it as a cinema camera differentiating feature.

PS: I do have a 1DX II and would like to have the c-log feature in it. And I would also love a small XLR box for it.

Inevitably, with C-log onboard, AF won't work because there is no gamma assist/built-in LUT (allowing more contrast for focusing). So, they'd need C-log AND gamma assist to be a really nice package and allow dual-pixel AF...I guess that would be a different camera. That (and NDs, and good audio recording/monitoring, and a VF for outdoors full-sun use) is the reason I moved from my 1DX to a Sony FS5. My A7RII is a terrific camera, but still needs those damn NDs, and it's codec is weak all the way around.

Love the 1DX for stills, has great color, and I didn't even mind the soft 1080p, but usability for anything but "music videos" was lacking (for a one-man operation). Then again, could just be my own limitations

No, I don't think so. DPAF works on the sensor/photo site level. On the C-series cameras that also use this feature together with Canon Log, there is no limitation that you need to use a certain 'camera assist' LUT for DPAF to work.

But if they DID include a Log profile, I'm sure they'd include the 'view assist' too, just like in the 1Dc. But all of this is hypothetical.

On another note, a weak rumour from a trustworthy source (Canonrumors.com) said a replacement for the C100 mkII was expected in 2017. It was said it won't be called C100 mkIII, yet it would be a "baby C300 mkII". If this is true, it might be an indication that Canon don't feel they can upgrade the C100 to 4k and 10bit, because it would offer "too much, for too little money". A C200 coming in at $7995 maybe? Street $7495?

I would pay for a Canon Log upgrade on the 1DX II in a heartbeat.

Right?! They absolutely refuse to give us precisely what we want - it's insane. The pricing on the C - series compared to the features of a Sony for the same $ - it's nuts. The fact that they promised to go after magic lantern if they hacked the 1dx/1dc is ridiculous. Can you imagine how quickly the 1dc's would fly off the shelves if we could get the same gorgeous 4k footage RAW? They refuse to do it, so why do they keep someone else from doing it? It's just stupid... That and if you've ever dealt with Canon's "repair" division, you'd start looking elsewhere for you A-cam...

Canon threatening ML is an internet rumour. Try as much as you can, but you won't be able to find any statement from Canon that they will kick ML, as there is none. ML guys didn't feel like spending 6K to hack the 1DX for fear of bricking it, so someone made up the story. Donate a 1DX/1DC to some of those hackers and some funds and they may do it. However, I heard ML has been disbanded and there are only individual hackers doing some hacking.

There were couple of times I wanted to try the ML in my 5DIII after watching some impressive results. However, I never tried using ML despite knowing that it will give good results because of the pain involved in the process and lack of reliability. I use Canon cameras because within minutes or so I can get my c-log shots colour corrected. I can't do that with a Sony camera as the colours are not great straight out of the box. Canon knows what it offers and it has stuck to its guns that it won't race to the bottom with its pricing.

I have good things to say about Canon's service centre regarding repairs. However, I crib about the price of the accessories. For eg. twice my C300 cable 1 got repaired and had to spend close to 250 usd for each repair. The only problem is in India, the Cinema series repairs are done only in Mumbai and in Delhi. I guess that is due to lack of sufficient cinema camera sales in other cities. However, situation might be different in other countries.
