Canon 17-55 or 24-70L ????

I ordered the 17-55 2.8 , a 60d and a hmc 150 (and all the goodies...batts, mics, filters, etc)

I have a 550D and had a chance to compare with a 60D last week. Aside from the adjustable monitor and manual audio control, the extra size and weight of the 60D is a plus.
The 17-55 2.8 and the 60D should bring home some great images and much easier low and high angles. I've been waiting for the next 5D but I may trade up to the 60D in the mean time.
I don't think I will keep the 550D more than a year because the resale will suffer after that, but the 60D could hang around a few years at least.

I have to say that I sold my 550D and 17-40F4L and got a 60D and 17-55 2.8 IS and all I can say is WOW! What a difference! Besides all the obvious upgrades like handling etc, I really live the viewfinder and interchangable focusing screens! It makes shooting manual primes so much fun!

Exactly what I did, the t2i is a great camera but the value has taken a huge hit. Brand new ( body only) you can find them for $699 brand new now. Hurry up and trade it before it loses more value. The 60d price will stay for a long time + is a better camera. Amazon has an INSANE deal right now as well for the 60d with a kit lens

$1266

That lens alone retails for well over $400+.

What did you get for the 550D? I looked on ebay and saw a few bodies still bringing a good return. This one went for $702, but others sold closer to $600

I had a 2 year warranty, 3rd party battery grip and a couple of extra batteries. My final auction sale was like $820 minus $50 in fees I came out with like $750+. Then I just came out of my pocket $300 and upgraded to the Canon 60D. It's just an overall better camera than the t2i even though the footage is nearly identical I just like the ergonomics of it better..... A lot better.

The swivel screen alone was worth the cost of admission!

The 24-70L series is a much better glass and is very popular amongst photographers. I'd recommend it but really it depends on what you are using it for. IS isn't really necessary on a wide angle any ways.

the 24-70 is not better glass than the 17 to 55 2.8...the optics are almost identical (the quality of the build is different the optics are not and most say the 17 to 55 2.8 optics are a bit better). and if you are shooting video without a hand held rig you absolutely need the IS at 17 or at 55. Don't shoot video without IS if you are just holding the camera in your hands without a rig or stabilizer.

Indeed. The 17-55mm uses the exact same lower dispersion glass that the 28-70mm has.
