GH2 Can someone please explain this whole hack business?

What are the advantages of shooting Intra?

What patch offers the fastest bit rate with near 100% reliablility?

If I am to shoot a lot of green screen, what is the best setting and patch to use on a GH2?

All right, so maybe someone might like to answer these 3 questions finally?

I'll add three for newbies:

Can someone explain GOP?

What is the spanning issue?

What are the least expensive and reliable cards specs that would still enable high bit rate hacks like Seaquake and GH-X from Driftwood?

What is the spanning issue?

All SDHC / SDXC cards use FAT32 file partitions, which allow a maximum file size of 4 GB. Longer video clips require more file space than 4GB, thus the video clip must "SPAN" several 4GB file segments to store the full clip. Your NLE software will read the meta-date that is stored on the SD card and rebuild the full size video clip on your hard-drive using the 4GB file segments from the SD card. With very high video recording bit-rates you need a very fast SD card to be able to SPAN at these high recording rates. Also, it appears that the memory controller built in to the high speed SDXC cards ( like the SanDisk 95 MB/sec 64 GB SDXC card ) helps to maintain full spanning at the highest data rates. ( 176+ Mbit per second )

What are the least expensive and reliable cards specs that would still enable high bit rate hacks like Seaquake and GH-X from Driftwood?

For GH-2 hacking I would only buy the SanDisk 95 MB/sec cards, which start at $31 for the 8GB size. ( B&H Photo )

Thank you that literally answered all of my questions i had.

Agreed. Thanks to TheDingo for quickly clarifying things in the midst of an avalanche of information.

However, just want to point out that Cowpunk52 has stated that for most things a simple Sandisk 30Mb/s class 10 card is good enough. No need for 95Mb/s, even for the Seaquake patch (176Mb/s).

The only exceptions to this are:
1)Spanning - only happens on the 64Gb 95Mb/s Sandisk Extreme card.
2)Slowed Motion (80% speed)
3)When the lens you are using is not a vintage/manual lens but a M43 lens which communicates with the body. (The constant exchange of compensating info needs more powerful cards)

I think a good updated sticky/FAQ would do wonders for this section of the forum. So many new users with so many questions- even those of us who know how to use the search tool are bombarded with information, much of which is outdated. I mean, look at the sticky thread titled "Temp FAQ". TEMP! It dates back to the GH1 and was written over 2 years ago, and was meant to be temporary!

I apologize for all us newbs clouding the forum with redundant questions.

You should not be discouraged when you seek answers. Search tools are great, but sometimes they don't turn up exacts.

I am working on creating a Sticky/FAQ for this topic and aggregating the knowledge so that it's easily accessible in this forum.

Car3o:

That wasn't so hard, was it? You could have done that the first time.

And BTW, I do have a great sense of humor, my first reply should have given that away. Apparently, YOU didn't get the humor. Who's the humorless one, now, li'l boy?

And also, BTW, I've read WAY past page one. Just so you know. But I still wasn't understanding and wanted some clarification.

If these types of noob posts are so painful to you, why don't you simply pass over them and move on to other more advanced posts, then?

Something to think about.
I stopped at this post. If you're not going to search before posting, make a thread about a topic that's bursting with information, and then word a post this way towards Car3o (who is a really awesome member and contributes to this forum)...

Yeah, I'm pretty sure you're the one in high school. Hence why you tried to use it as an insult and then attempted to lecture someone online. So here's my online lecture for you, sir:

Honest research (search function) mixed with a pinch of humility and respect can go a long way here. I'm sorry your skin wasn't thick enough for Car3o's initial post, but I saw nothing wrong with it personally.

Come on guys, lets just all be friends, and search for answers and stuff... you know since it's like 2011 and all?

I have to agree with the OP... this is one of the most unfriendly responses I've seen on DVXUser in many years. The OP was upfront with the fact that he was really not understanding even the most abstract level of what was going on. If you don't want to deal with such a thing, just skip it. But I looked at the threads and stickies, trying to understand if I WOULD understand anything without some prior knowledge, and I don't see where there's a clear starting point.

Please, folks, be kind and patient, or ignore posts that you don't think should be made.

Something simple like "A hack is a modification of a camera's firmware by a third-party developer (e.g., not authorized by the manufacturer). It generally adds new capabilities to the camera, but is not as thoroughly tested or guaranteed as the software provided by the manufacturer, and can often be downright experimental. For more information on GH2 hacks, look..." would at least give the OP a starting point.

This is something being worked on as we speak. Hopefully the whole section will become more newbie friendly soon.

I agree with Ullanta on this. Yes of course the info is all out there but, as someone said earlier, it is highly splintered. To tell a newbie to search, or especially to google it, really is not that helpful because the 5 thousand pages that come back are going to be splintered information. Yes a smart set of search terms will zero in on good info, but newbies don't necessarily know the right terms to use.In my opinion, if a post like the OP irritates you, just pass on by. And if you want to help, simply send a link to a specific page of good starting info. Someone eventually did just that in this thread, but there were 3 pages of snark before it happened.

I seriously don't think the Op was trying to be mean as much as trying to make a joke and be funny. (which in a silly way he was) I think he figured the op would chuckle, then be like "ok seriously guys, can anyone help me out with this question". But instead, he lashed out at the joker calling him immature and a high school boy or whatever. Maybe he was out of line, but so was the op's response. After all he's the one asking people to take their time to answer a question he's not able to answer himself. This is a public forum on the internet, there will always be the occasional joker. If he's so sensative that this innocent little joke bothered him to the point of personally insulting someone over. Then maybe he should spend more time looking for the answer to his questions himself. Just sayin.

Yes, Car, I also think your initial joke was fine, and your first post after that was a good attempt to calm things down and help the OP. It was after that that everything started degrading. But evewn your helpful post i think was too detailed... meaning, it kind of answered the question "what does the GH2 hack do", whereas I think the question that most needed answering was "what's a hack?".

Anyway, I don't have any DSLR at all, so can't address the issues of differential lay access of the different hacks. I have seen a few firmware updates for other gear that's helped...

The one reason I'm scared to try out the hack is I can't find any information on how easy it is/procedure to remove it. I mostly use the gh2 for it's long recording times (which I heard doesn't hold up with the hack due to higher bitrates) and would like to easily get rid of and replace the hack when I need it to work in its original form. Can anyone lead me to info on this?
