GH2 Can someone please explain this whole hack business?

Okay, I'll probably get ridiculed, but here goes:

I'm getting a GH2 and every forum I go to everyone's talking hack, hack, hack.

Could someone explain the whole hack thing and why you'd want to do it and what does the hack--actually, hacks, since there seems to be more than one--do?

Do I want to hack my GH2? Do I "need" to?

obviously, i was just kidding. hoping you would see some humor. not one for humor i take it.

it's on every other thread what the hack does. and i'm not going to ridicule you, but it's evident you didn't read much more than the first page. but to simplify it for you in laymen terms, it improves the camera's quality. there is only 1 hack, and there are multiple patches. one guy created a tool to allow you to manipulate the camera's settings, such as bitrate, iso and other things, that some find useful, some do not. personal-view.com is the source of all things gh2 hack. but there it is. explained to you in adult manner. now get your panties out of a wad and go hack your little heart away.

And BTW, I do have a great sense of humor, my first reply should have given that away. Apparently, YOU didn't get the humor. Who's the humorless one, now, li'l boy?

And also, BTW, I've read WAY past page one. Just so you know. But I still wasn't understanding and wanted some clarification.

If these types of noob posts are so painful to you, why don't you simply pass over them and move on to other more advanced posts, then?

If you ask better questions, you tend to get better answers.

If you've read a bunch of stuff, perhaps you might want to ask questions such as these:

What are the advantages of shooting Intra?

What patch offers the fastest bit rate with near 100% reliablility?

If I am to shoot a lot of green screen, what is the best setting and patch to use on a GH2?

If you ask general quesitons with a hint of humor, you might get general answers with a hint of humor in return.

Something to think about.
 
Does seem to be kind of rude in his entitlement questions especially considering his longtime investment in the boards and all 5 posts!... These are all very easily searched discussions...
 
It will improve your communication skills.

Kidding... your best bet is to head to www.personal-view.com and learn what you can. You'll have to deal with an anti-US, often mean-spirited russian who runs the forum, one with a sense of humor that makes even you seem jolly in comparison. But there are a lot of great people there and tons to learn. The key right now is a guy named Nick Driftwood who continues - on a weekly basis - to bring more and more performance out of the camera. His best settings require fast SD cards and lots of hard drive space for the bits you'll soon be eating up.
 
And you don't 'need to.' The Camera is great out of the box for most people's needs. Really the hack is for filmmakers looking to get max quality out of the camera at the sacrifice of bitrate.
 
Seriously... what is with people and not wanting to read? I mean you could search this forum which has so much information about the hack it's almost nauseating... you could search google... I mean come on. At least be more specific than "what is hack" etc.. lol.

Well... Risking to ask something that probably was asked a million times before: What are the advantages of shooting Intra?

I've taken my GH2 out of my garage trunk and cleaned the dust now that we European guys have 25p finally (yes I know, not the hack for now), but Intra, GOP, and every-other mumbo-jumbo encoder term needs a little study from my part, If anyone wants to share their knowledge I'll be very appreciated.

I will pipe in and share as a newcomer to the platform and say that there is SO MUCH FRIKIN INFORMATION to absorb about the hacks and I don't fault the OP one iota.

I have been reading for over a month and still am not up to speed. And considering all my efforts, I can't appreciate the smugness people return in requests for help getting a good grasp on things.

Kind of irritating. Funny how those irritated by request for info can be EQUALLY irritating. Go figure.

If there was one power user who took the time to keep a log of the developments, MANY of us would appreciate it. It would be a tremendous tool. Right now the info is severely splintered.
 
i've learned through research you're more likely to learn something if you go out and find the information your looking for rather than asking. i don't mind answering any question, neither do any of the other guys, but even doing a little googling, you can find the first 10 pages about the hack are easily answered. hell, i remember back in the day people wanted to know what exactly a 35mm adapter did and how it was just as confusing as the hack, but searching yielded far better results than asking, cause you learn A LOT from reading.

i should also say, the gh2 hack is EXACTLY the same as the gh1 hack. just go to the gh1 subreddit, there's a FAQ that pretty much goes over most of what there is to know about the hack.
 
Point taken Heartfelt. But to be honest the question(s) are so open ended and subjective. It should be obvious that hacking a camera is meant to try and improve upon it's stock features. But when asked "Do I want to hack my GH2" or "Do I need to" ...that answer would be more dependent on the individual. My reason(s) for hacking might be different from the next guy. A more specific question like "what advantages or changes does a hack bring to the GH-2" can be answerd in depth or pointed out in a particular thread.

It's not that folks here are not trying to be helpful....but these types of questions have been asked over and over (and have been answered over and over). He can go to personal-view.com and find out more about the hack (since that is Vitaliy's site). But in general....as good as the stock camera already is...the hack improves upon the visual quality of the camera. There are a lot of variables on how....but go to his site and you'll find great explanations or go to the GH-2 section in this forum and you'll see it started there with the GH-1 (like Car3o suggested). There are some stickies to read there as well.
