Camera rumors for 2016?

Well, a7 III and a7R III could actually arrive at the same time, and I wouldn't complain at all about that.

If it was up to me to direct Sony's a7 strategy, we would have:

* a7 III with 24 Mpix and the same AF as the a7R II. Maybe clean 4K, but just leave the current a7 II video (1080p with aliasing/moire) if needed because this one needs to be CHEAP ($1700 at launch, lower if possible).
* a7R III with more Mpix and improvements in all the things photogs care about (AF, flash triggering, that kind of stuff I don't even know about). Not many video improvements because Mpix are not optimal for video and the a7S is the one for that.
* a7S III with 18 Mpix and same AF as the a7R II or III, full sensor readout giving clean 4K at 60 fps, un-crippled slog3 for dynamic range that matches the FS7. 10-bit would be nice but it's not mandatory on the III; it should be there, even internally, on IV, 2-3 years from now.

and..."touchscreen" with AF FD tracking as good as the 5DmkIV / 1DXmkII.

I should have added a disclaimer - $3000-$3500 cameras don't ship as many bodies ... unless it's 5D MKIV, which is currently 6th on the Amazon DSLR best seller list

Tthe negative for Canon here is that MKIV has a 4-star rating, albeit from very few reviews, on both Amazon and B&H, which is the lowest of its major releases.

there are 10 reviews on amazon. come on...thats nothing! the few bad ratings are faulty cameras and one guy just hates it. give it 3-6 months and ill bet it has a 4.5 start rating or more. I've watched a ton of reviews already on youtube and I'm seeing people that actually bought it are loving it overall.

B&H has 5-5 star. 1-4 star which would be 5 but he couldn't import the RAW file into Lightroom yet since there is noupdate for the RAW files yet (not canon's fault LOL) and 1-2 star that didn't find enough of a reason to keep it over his 5D3 & 5DSr. don't see a problem there either.

i think the people that actually buy this camera are going to love it or at minimum accept it for ts strengths which is what people do on every camera since no camera has it all. it may not every be as appealing as the A7SII or A7RII for video which seem to have disappointed people on video forums but not necessarily the photography forums that don't have a bias on video.

you seem on the bitter side of this camera and its evident in quite a few of your posts. still i like a lot of what you post on this forum and appreciate your knowledge and input overall.

Canon isn't going to fail because of this camera.

My take that in electronics - much like it is in the automotive or household or whatever - the next step has to be a step up. As an example, the first 911 that Porsche built in the early-mid 1960's had an 130 HP engine. The latest edition of the car has as many as 550 (with other numerous advancements along the way).

The electronics world works even faster. My current computer is 300-500 times faster than my first one. The first time I knew someone with a digital camera was in the late 1990's - Sony Mavica with a 500K (0.5 MPX) sensor. It used a floppy disc to store images.

And, glancing around the camera world, we can easily discern what the state of the art is at this moment. And 5D MKIV ought to be that state of the art for its $3,500 asking price. But it isn't. Not as a photo camera and not as a video camera. And the same can be applied across entire Canon product line (with the exception of 1D XII, as an action/sports model, which is as good as it can currently get in that genre). And people should expect more and demand more. Or we'd still be driving a 911 with the 25 HP engine from the 1938 KdF.

DLD. Have you shot with the 5D mk4? The camera is lighter, more FPS, touch screen, dual pixel AF, dual pixel raw, amazingly clean high ISO, 13.8 stops DR, world class AF system, and stunningly clean 4K.
Lots of "step ups" from the previous 5d's. But you wouldn't know because you haven't shot with it, held it, or possibly even seen it in the flesh.

The 5D mark IV is an excellent photography camera but lacks excessively in video. The fact that it doesn't have external 4k has already rendered it obsolete for videographers as the internal codec is not practical for most videographers. Canon will be forced to turn on the external 4k in a firmware upgrade but by then it will be too late as the upcoming GH5 will have cannibalized it.

So folks, I'm back from the IBC, it really was an interesting show with a lot of new glass to play with.

Unfortunately, not so much on the new camera side (ok, ok, Canon C700... alright).

But, I got some interesting rumors from my friend at Sony booth.

First, I was told about the announcement of an A7R III in the near future, with a 50MP sensor. Well, I've got one more new camera info from him.

There is a new F or FS camera to be announced before 2016 SATIS in Paris, from 15 to 17 November http://www.satis-expo.com/ where it will be showed.

There is still an embargo at Sony so he could not tell me more (because he was not told more) but there will be an announcement in the US (and probably worldwide but he specified a US announcement).

EDIT : is there any "big" or important show/convention/expo in the US between now and SATIS expo in Paris ? Or could it be an "out of the blue" announcement from Sony outside any major event ?

Probably just an announcement outside of expos, just like F5 and F55 back in 2012. I would guess that it will be part of the Cine Alta brand (F5, F55, F65) thus it will be named F something.

Sony is known to make announcements outside any major trade show so it seems possible.

HC-X1 and AG-UX180 are much the same with the AG-UX180 having 3G-SDI and timecode connectors and the HC-X1 just HDMI 2.0 and analogue video/audio out. The Sony Z150 has 12x zoom to the Panasonic's with 20x. There are of course different record codecs which may sway the choice. Panasonic's have UHD 50P and 60P but the Sony Z150 is only 30P. Wanting UHD 60P and long zoom removed the Z150 from my list though all my cameras are Sony at the moment including the FDR-AX1 which is 60P UHD with 20x zoom , and was looking for an upgraded model with larger sensor. The AX1 is much like the Panasonic HC-X1000 may even have the same 1/3" effective sensor !!! The hole I was pointing out is no 50/60P UHD in the Sony range between the now old PXW-Z100/FDR-AX1 and the FS7 the other models with interchangable or fixed lenses are only 30P UHD.

I see what you mean now, thanks.

By the way, here's a handy summary of tomorrow's upcoming announcements, from mirrorlessrumors.com:

Tomorrow (Monday Sept.19) we will have plenty of press events at the Photokina show:

12:30 Berlin time Panasonic (G80, FZ2000, LX10, GH5 pre announcement, new lenses)
14:00 Berlin time Canon (nothing new to announce, they will talk about the already announced cameras)
15:00 Berlin time Sony (probably nothing new to announce. If there is something new than maybe the A9?)
16:00 Berlin time Nikon (mirrorless surprise?)
17:00 Berlin time Fuji (New medium format camera)
18:30 Berlin time Olympus (E-PL8, 25mm f/1.2, 12-100mm f/4.0, 30mm macro, E-M1II pre-announcement)

So far only Olympus will live stream the event. As usual you can follow the liveblogging here on Mirrorlessrumors!

I was watching Dan Chung's interview with the Leica rep from the IBC and the rep mentioned that his company is "working with" Huawei on the smartphone camera tech. Which made me wonder about what would happen if Huawei also decided to make an affordable camera? $330 with lens included.

Oh and Canon showed their "prototype" 120 MPX camera again. It was inside the 5Ds body with the 5Ds electronics. It took 19 seconds to offload one shot.

a5100 shows as discontinued at digitalrev store, so, a5300 may be near. It should be a $700 version of the $1000 a6300, just smaller and without the EVF. That probably means even worse overheating but that's not a problem for some folks (me).

Samyang/Rokinon says they might (will?) make some zooms too and, if so, they'll begin with the Xeen cinema series before embarking on other mounts.
