Camera rumors for 2016?

DLD, I hope you don't mind my outrageous crossposting. I just noticed your posts in the Digital Bolex topic and thought this might fit better here....

Price? 5000 bucks for the body. About 8000 fully kitted. What about the cameras that URSA Mini 4.6K is competing with? ,,,
It's one of those "things we know we don't know" ideas. Well, some people know but, as per usual, they ain't talking.

As to rigging, etc., it's true but A6300 + External Recorder of Your Choice is still a lot less than URSA Mini and is sufficient for many people. And, if A6300 isn't good enough, maybe GH5 will be. Or 5D MKIV. Or some Sony model. Or something something else.

PS. iON/Contour, which was one of GoPro's chef competitors, just went belly up. This camera manufacturing biz is one tough gig.

If that's true, why would they bother reducing the prices of the C100 and C300? Canon has to do something to avoid losing the market to Sony completely. I know I'm watching them for another 6 months or so. If I don't see positive developments, I'm moving to Sony.

because they make their money making lenses. I work for a major dealer in the UK, trust me, the C300 II ain't getting replaced anytime soon. Canon has the slowest product cycle of all big manufacturers. It will be at least 2 more years before they replace it. C100 II probably end of next year or early 2018 at earliest to get a replacement.

Right now you can't buy a Sony pro camera even if you want to. There is no stock - that's why the price drop - so they can steal some sales. At least that how I see it. But Canon prices always starts high and then drops according to market conditions, not necessarily signaling a replacement. Eventually 2-3 months prior to replacement they will do a big drop, but not that early in the middle of their product life cycle.

Sony on the other hand starts low in price and keeps it this way - as a matter of fact the price on FS5's and FS7's has increased with more than 20% since release - due to currency flux and 2 Sony price increases. And in August there is another one coming because of Brexit.

last year this time around - an FS7 body was around £4800 - £5,000 + VAt in the UK. Now it is £6000 - £6200 + VAT. Supply and demand really.

When are you going to put that on your website? Is that true?

That;s what Canon told me, so that's that. When I know more, I may post something , but Canon won't like me, and I like Canon so I'd like to keep it that way, let's hope they dont read this forum.

Well, it's not like the C500 MKII/C700 rumors are brand new. They'd pretty much started a year ago.

And Sony's in a bit of a bind due to the Kumamoto. As are several manufacturers buying from them. No sensors = no cameras. They're twiddling their thumbs but there ain't much they can do in the short run.

Yes, but I was told this back in March before NAB, as I was expecting something big from Canon front, but apparently it got pushed back to IBC. Canon's sensor is their own though.

Fuji Xt2 is out - $1,600. The early "photo" reviews are pretty good. Its best video is 8-bit 4:2:2 out via HDMI.

But that is still a DSLR that happens to shoot video.....that requires a bunch of other stuff to make it functional....vs. a proper cinema camera, more money up front but you are ready to go and no issues.

It's functional without the other stuff. People have been using these cameras for years now and creating beautiful images with limited accessories. The other stuff just makes the tool more convenient and/or better to use in production. No comparison to a proper cinema camera, but it's (they are) very functional.

Exactly. And even if you build it up, it will still have all its quirks like atrocious rolling shutter, overheating and so on.

Well, I'd love to buy an FS7 for $1500 but I don't think that's going to be an option. I'll take a lesser camera for less money.

My problem with the Fuji is not that, but the fact that it will probably have less DR than I want. Whenever I see no talk about gamma curves on a camera release, I assume it's not for me.

So far the price of a FS7 bought in the USA has remained constant.

That;s because moest people today have unrealistic expectations. They want a Porchse performance for the price of a Prius. Not going to ever happen.

There is a reason why top end camears like the Alexa Mini and Red Weapon cost that much. To a high end professional, who has the right type of jobs, he enters the transaction as a business decision, to them whether it costs 30 grand or 40 grand or a media card costs 2000 or 200 it doesnt really matter. They know they'll pay it off according to a buisness plan.

The problem is when someone with 1000 to spend wants performance like a 50,000 camera from a 50cent camera. dont' expect the XT2 to be anything revolutionary. For a 1600 dollar camera I am sure it will be amazing. But nothing more than that - a 1600 dollar camera.

For me, the XT2 must do 720/59.94 as well as the GH2 I currently have. For stills I'm sure it will be a step up from my XT1, but I don't feel I need to step up right now. Coming back from a vacation and I'm seeing that my point and shoot camera took more pictures than my XT1. So for me the video will drive the purchase, if it sucks, I'll wait to upgrade when used prices fall. If it's good, I'll upgrade at new prices and plan on an external recorder for the more demanding subjects.

Why 720 video mentioned above? Because that the standard we have decided to use at work, same as many broadcast networks and local affiliates. Having a good match let's me do work for work with my choice of camera and workflow.

I think this is the typical amount of time from a product release to a price drop. Canon usually follows this path. As far as "doing something about Sony"....I honestly don't think they care. I really don't think they are worried about Sony. It has never seemed to be a motivator in their marketing/produce management decision making.

They don't have to care about Sony, but they do have to care about sales. I don't have any knowledge of what sales figures actually are. But hypothetically if sales figures for the C100 drop in half next year AND Canon has the technology to make a camera that would sell more, it's common sense that they would release a new camera. Unless they've made a strategic decision to abandon the mid-level market.

These camera companies are like aircraft carriers -- you don't just turn them on a dime. If Canon, Sony or another manufacturer made a decision to take its own available technology and make a camera out of it today it would be at best two years before that product hit the market. These things take WAY more time than you can imagine.

Mitch - if you're in the loop - could you please refresh us (if possible) with one of your beloved subtle hints if we can expect any major camera announcements in September?

Like you did in the beginning of this year regarding a few?

(with no details of course)
