Camera rumors for 2016?

So, maybe this is what they meant by the "high functionality cameras".

Sony cut its sales outlook for its devices division, which includes image sensors used in smartphones, to a range of 1 trillion to 1.05 trillion yen from 1.3 trillion to 1.5 trillion yen.

Strong demand from smartphone makers such as Apple Inc had helped Sony recover from a slump in sales of consumer electronics such as television sets.

But Apple and other smartphone makers have seen slowing sales of high-end handsets since late last year, prompting Sony to recently cancel the development of advanced camera modules designed for high-end smartphones...

Also, it's interesting for them to blame the "declining" TV sales at the time of the explosion - US sales up 83% year to year - in the 4K/HDR equipped sets.

Up 83% in one sector of the television market does not mean they are making money overall. So they sold 36 4k TVs instead of 20 last year :)

They're getting out-hustled by the Koreans and the Chinese.

Samsung and LG provide quality as good or better than the Japanese brands and are generally more affordable for a given performance and the Chinese dominate the low end. Most Japanese CEO's will blame the "strong Yen" but it's really their corporate structure that is doing them in.

BTW, the 4K TV US sales are expected to be 13 million units shipped in 2016, bringing the total up to ~ 18. China has a half of the global 4K market. As that link showed, back in the 80's and 90's, the top names were Sony, Mitsubishi, Panasonic, JVC, Toshiba, Hitachi, Sharp, Pioneer. Drop by your local retailer and it's LG, Samsung, Vizio, Hisense with only one old timer - Sony - still battling on.

PS. I got a terrific deal on a 13" curved screen. It wasn't made to be curved, naturally, but it got dropped in transit. From a certain angle, it almost looks like 3D. Without the 3D glasses.

I wonder if the adoption of the UHD Premium TV standard is going to change any of this ?
( I can't wait for cheap 10-bit HDR REC 2020 4K TVs to flood the market )

The HDR sets are already selling for about $1,000 for a 50" model (are you using centimeters in Canada?) and, naturally, the higher end will have some performance advantages over the entry level 4K (a store not far from me has a 40" 4K model for $199) but Americans make budget conscious decisions and, for most, anything labeled 4K and HDR will more than suffice.

And the high end will go to LG OLED sets.

... Quite simply, Vizio disagrees with the UHD Premium program of the UHD Alliance and considers it to be problematic for a number of reasons, about which the company is finally speaking out publically.

According to recent declarations by Vizio spokespeople,

“Vizio sees value in the industry specifying a premium experience for consumers but the “Premium 4K” certification program proposed by the UHDA falls short and has serious problems. The UHDA program does not sufficiently detail how to measure for or specify items like peak brightness or black level and as a result, certifies some products that we don’t believe should qualify for a UHD Premium certification and would ignore other products that should be certified”

In other words, it’s apparently not that Vizio thinks the UHD Premium standard is too strict for its TVs to handle, the company instead thinks it’s too fuzzy to be taken seriously across the board.

13 million 4k sets is decent but what is going to be the total number of TV sets sold? I am sure a lot of folks are like me - totally happy with my 1080p set with no plans to upgrade the family room TV. Netflix and some of the internet is the only think 4k going right now. So if I had to replace a TV, sure I probably get a 4k set but the 4k alone is not a huge driver right now imho.

It is going to be agony waiting for the next show where some cameras might be unveiled! NAB was pretty sparse and Photokina is in late September. I guess we will have to keep talking about TVs. :)

4K/UHD sets will account for 40% of the total market. 1080p for ~ 52% and 720p for the rest. The cost for a "raw" UHD panel is only about 11% premium over 1080p. It was 30% last year. (all according to IHS)

As to cameras, there are apparently bad news and more bad news. A bunch of new Sony, Olympus and Panasonic cameras that were expected to be announced in Q3 and shipped in Q4 are now expected to show up no sooner than Q1 2017 due to the disruptions in the Sony sensor fab in Kumamoto. Following a six week shutdown, the plant still won't be 100% operational until August.

I bought a few screens recently.
- Two 40" ones that are 4K just because that's the model I liked best and it comes curved and with 4K but really it's the Samsung panel that I liked and it's not more expensive than the flat 1080p ones (well, maybe $50 more, but really: much less reflections on the curved 4K model).
- One 75" Sony that is 1080p and I think is the cheapest TV you can buy at that size. It's far from perfect, I could complain about many things (background illumination is uneven and it has some serious fixed pattern noise) but definitely not the lack of 4K (I'd have to sit at less than 2m from this screen to notice a difference with 4K).

Total number of TVs sold in the US each year: around 34 to 38 million depending on which year you look at. Which means 4K will be 30-40% of the market in 2016.

In addition, 4K of recording time is extended up to 30 minutes.

Recently well full spec of X-T2 that rumor is flowing is now clear. X-T2 is a sensor and high image iodinated, I yo is unlikely to see the normal evolution model with enhanced each section corresponds to the 4K video. LCD monitor of its own 3-way tilting is also the place what usability of the or interesting. The appearance of the X-T2 is, it seems to be similar to the camera of the leak image of the past.

And we will need to wait to see if the moire is under control this time, my XT1 in any of the 60fps settings is truely dreadful. The other settings are more than I would allow as well. GH2 is still better than the XT1. Look ahead and check the Xpro2 and it still has more moire at whatever DPReview used for frame speed, better but still too much. I'm in a serious wait and see mode on the XT2. The only thing I'm certain about is the colors will look great, and the stills will be better than my XT1 which is already a very good camera.

In addition, the XT2 will need to have HDMI output in the recording modes, currently the XT1 and all previous bodies only has active HDMI in playback modes. The XT2 will need to have HDMI that is clean as well as info overlay (external recording or just external monitor) and needs to be capable of the full resolution output (4k) with uncompressed signals so you can get the most out of the camera. I'm certain the internal recording will still be 8 bit highly compressed and probably not at bit rates that will support the best results.

In short I don't see this as competing with a GH4, I don't see Fuji moving in this direction yet. With their film background (and motion film background) I'm not sure why they haven't built a real cinema camera. The only reason I can think of is that they can't get the processing for their pseudo random color filter array, or that this CFA leads to inherent moire that requires a doubling of sample pixels to scale down to a reasonable image. Not a lot of 8k sensors out there that could be scaled down to great 4k.

I guess we'll see in a few months, but this is one camera that I'm not buying until I can rent it and test it myself. If it passes then I'll buy it ASAP and get a nice speed booster and build a cage.

So C200 it is then!

no chance. Canon will release a shoulder mount s35 4K camera with slow-mo - approx $30K at IBC 2016; totally new design for Cinema lineup - moving away from the current blown up DSLR look. Amira competitor. No small Cinema EOS cameras in near future.

When are you going to put that on your website? Is that true?

Interesting. Thanks.

So C100mk2 and C300mk2 will probably be their lower end cameras for the foreseeable future? They probably won't start replacing those with shoulder mounted cinema cameras, too?

It's a new design , AFAIK not replacing the c500 as some people think.

I wouldn't call the c300 ii lower end though, but yeah c100 ii will remain the cheapest of them and sitting lowest on the food chain. Cracking good camera though.

If that's true, why would they bother reducing the prices of the C100 and C300? Canon has to do something to avoid losing the market to Sony completely. I know I'm watching them for another 6 months or so. If I don't see positive developments, I'm moving to Sony.

I think this is the typical amount of time from a product release to a price drop. Canon usually follows this path. As far as "doing something about Sony"....I honestly don't think they care. I really don't think they are worried about Sony. It has never seemed to be a motivator in their marketing/produce management decision making.

DLD, I hope you don't mind my outrageous crossposting. I just noticed your posts in the Digital Bolex topic and thought this might fit better here.

From the look of things, PhotoKina will have a lot of announcements that could have been made at the NAB. Canon just dropped $4,000 off C300 MKII (as a promotion, they say, from $16,000 down to $12,000). There's a new 4K Fuji hybrid, going for the GH4 and A6300 niche.

I don't think anyone will reveal any "cinema suited" cameras at Photokina. Maybe IBC, who knows. But it's already confirmed-ish that there won't be a new C100 to rival Blackmagic. And all those hybrid/stills cameras aren't exactly what I'm looking for. You have to rig them up, which is cumbersome, and all those accessories will take the cost to the level of more complete cameras. A6300 might be just 1000 dollars, but when you buy an external recorder and other stuff, the price might triple - and it still has all the quirks of "NOT cinema camera" like overheating, atrocious rolling shutter, sub par highlight roll off and what else.

Within a couple of months, the need to have any BMD product will be gone.

I really don't think anyone will announce a camera to rival URSA Mini 4.6K in the next few months, apart from maybe Kinefinity and they are having issues with their Terra models. Certainly not Panasonic, Sony, Canon, Fuji or other big boys. RED have already shown their new line up for years to come. The "need to have BMD" will continue because they offer great value for filmmakers with shoelace budgets.

- Super 35 sensor
- 15 stops of dynamic range
- colors/motion/look that people would kill for
- all kinds of RAW
- ProRes XQ/4444/HQ/422/LT/Proxy in 4.6K, 4.6K 2.4:1, 4K 16:9, 4K DCI, Ultra HD, 3K Anamorphic, 2K 16:9, 2K DCI, HD
- DNxHR
- new upcoming OS that looks really good and is packed with features

The only real drawbacks are the magenta corners issue, the upside facing XLR inputs and the fact that you can't turn the camera off or change settings without opening the side monitor. Internal ND might be a drawback, depending on your POV.

Price? 5000 bucks for the body. About 8000 fully kitted. What about the cameras that URSA Mini 4.6K is competing with?

Panasonic Varicam LT 16 500 for the body
ARRI Alexa +70 000 for the body
Sony F65 65 000 for the body+VF
C300 MKII 12 000 for the body
RED Scarlet-W 10 000 for the body

Now, I'd love to be proven wrong, but there's no way there will be another camera like URSA Mini 4.6K this year for 5k or so.
