Camera rumors for 2016?

geeez...the rumor sites are hard pressed to get a story 24hrs ahead, and you want months and years ! 2016 will definitely have some new cameras....

Don't worry the best new camera of 2016 you won't see till 2017. So technically you're always waiting.

It depends. If the overheating on the a7R II is happening at the sensor, then yes, sure. If it is happening at the processor, then no, not unless they do something else to the body.

I'm perfectly fine with a camera that only shoots 4K for 5 minutes, though. I hardly ever shoot a take of more than one minute, actually. And not every camera has to be perfect for every job.

I'd actually like to see improvements on current cameras like the AJA CION and the Panasonic Varicam 35.
Perhaps we'll finally see ARRI drop a 6K sensor in the Alexa SXT.

It would also be interesting to see if Canon will release a C500 MKII with improved ergonomics and frame rates as well as internal Raw recording.

Of course we'll see a Sony a7s MKII with faster readout time on the sensor, internal 4K, S-Log 3 with lower ISO values, and IBIS. Then there'll be a Samsung NX2.

Panavision, where are you?

Hi Bill, Just out of curiosity, what don't you like about the Panasonic Varicam 35? The size is pretty large, I had a chance to use it at NAB, (display) and was amazed by the low light ability in the high iso mode. I was talking to the reps from Abel, and they mentioned it starting to get some traction on commercial shoots. In my opinion it's pricy, I thought it should be in the 40's, but apparently Panasonic was unable to produce the feature set for that. What are your thought's on that camera?

Why can't they make it the size and weight of an F55? Why this incredibly expensive cable to tether the head to the record unit? Why two heads?

Camera like Cinema EOS-line with cinematic look (e.g D16, BM, Alexa, F65) for 5k all in would be a killer.

I'm betting that we will see a C100mkIII sooner than later. i believe it would at least have 4:2:2 8bit shooting 4k which wouldn't undermine the C300mkII with its much more robust internal codec options.

i don't see any reason why it wouldn't have the same DR as the C300mkII plus the killer dual pixel AF.

ill even go out on a limb and say it would have 4k @ 60fps but maybe only @ 4:2:0 which would make me happy but would still buy it without 60fps.

My bet is a firmware update for the C100mkIII: 4K @ 4:2:0 @ up to 30fps and the good 4:2:2 HD codec of the old C300 for HD @ up to 60 fps. This should be technically feasible and wouldn't hurt other cameras as the new C300mkIII now is playing in a totally different league.

joe, are you talking about a firmware update to the C100mkII? you wrote C100mkIII. if you were talking about C100mkII then thats a very interesting idea would interest me somewhat being i have the orig C100. question for you and others...does the AF on the C100mkII match the AF capabilities of the new C300mkII? does it have face detection that will move thru the full frame in realtime?

thanks
david

FS7 was announced at IBC last year. Was it even talked about until week or two before the announcement? I think there might be a chance that Sony will announce a new camera this month.

Ah, yes David, I meant the C100mkII. Thank you. It should be absolutely capable of internal 4K. And it would make a lot of sense to keep the camera "fresh" that way, like Panasonic is doing with the continuous updates for the GH4.
I didn't test the AF of the C100mkII nor did I with the C300mkII but the phase detection AF of both cameras is said to be one of the best in the market. And yes, the C100mkII does have face detection in a big area of the frame, though not the whole of it, but only with EF lenses.

Could Samsung make a C100/URSA Mini/FS7-type video camera?

Samsung can do anything that Canon, Blackmagic, or Sony can, if they put their minds to it.

"Right now, Canon sensors including the EOS-1Dx are manufactured on a 500nm process. That’s the kind of process technology from the AMD 486DX4 era and Pentiums in the early 1990s. The Nikon D4 sensor uses a 250 nm process. That moves us up to the Pentium II or AMD K6 era. The Sony A7R/A7s sensors as well as the D800 sensor are built on an 180nm aluminum platform. Pentium III or Athlon XP.

"What Samsung has done with the NX1 is go to 65nm with copper interconnect, the process technology used in the Core 2 Duo (Conroe). That alone is enough to help decrease noise. Where Samsung went even further was to make the sensor a backside illuminated one which puts the circuitry behind the light detecting photocathode layer."

Samsung's market sort of ends at the best end of the "Best Buy" (in photo/video), which normally ends with 5D MKIII (I should know, as I dropped one to the floor there a couple of months ago). At the moment, their flagship is NX1 at $1,500 (sometimes, it can be found on sale for $1,300), so they have a couple of grand to play with. It's unlikely they'll make this huge jump to ~ $3,000, which would double the price of their most expensive product but they could easily move upwards from $1,500 to the $2,000-$2,500 range.

As I keep saying, if one followed the steps of the Korean chaebol (재벌, for those reading Korean), moving into the upscale portions of the markets is one of the cornerstones of their strategies. FWIW, I remember from thirty years ago, when Samsung and Gold Star (corporate name before the change to LG) were considered entry level products and relatively poor quality entry level products at that. Now, one looks at those 105" curved OLED TV's with a $70,000 MAP and the term "entry level" hardly enters the mind.

Looks like Canon needs to form an alliance with Intel to get with the times for chip production. Clearly holding them back. I would guess that Samsung has a full frame camera in the works. There is a lot of potential there.

The GH5 has the chance to be a killer in 2016. The team was asking for input early this year from a pro video point of view. It would be wise of them to make a GH5-V version that costs more but "goes there" with video features.

Canon does a lot of own research. Its problems, if one can call them such, is having various models on the market for prolonged periods of time compared to Sony (and Panasonic, at a certain price range). And, if you look at the similarly performing and substantially less expensive Sigma lenses, overcharging for glass.

The rumor sites are also saying that Sony should be announcing a follow-up / replacement / upgrade to the A6000 (APS-C sensor), heavily focused on video features, any day now (September/October?). I'm very curious to see what they're going to announce.

They have some sort of press conference at IBC on 11th. I'm personally hoping for a FS100 replacement.
