C500: C500 and The Atomos Shogun

Thank's Chris, was this with the latest firmware 1.0.7.1.00 and were you recording to the CF cards as well as an external recorder. I'm doing some house work and repair, after I clean up over the weekend, I'm going to test the C500 and Odyssey in all record modes. I have a great audio set up with a Schoeps MK41 and a lav mic Sonotrim or Seinnheiser MK2, I have a feeling from 8-10 feet we should be able to handle the fan noise.

I don't want to get into returning the C500 and start getting into the C300 II, unless this fan noise is really that big a problem.

Yes this was the new firmware - new out of box with the it. I did order a couple 35mm x 35mm x 10mm small fans to experiment with...

I emailed Matt Porwoll and he was generous enough to get back to me and said this when question on long term experience with C500 modification:

"I unfortunately don't have any long-term feedback on the solution (and in fact haven't used a C500 since - my C300 MKII has done it for me). But I can tell you for the duration of the six week job in the heat of an Indian/Bangladeshi summer, the fan solved all our issues. We were able to conduct interior interviews in the heat without the sound of the modified fans interfering with sound at all."

I think the mod will solve the issue... I ordered a couple 35mm x 35mm x 10mm low noise fans - they are a little wider profile than the 6mm fans on the mod he used in the blog, but I should be able to do a quick test before I cut the plastic from the paper template I made to attache like in Porwoll's blog.

On a side note here and interesting read on Windy Films blog about how they use the C500 for interviews and although they feel it is noisy they also feel it is okay for interview set ups were the mic is off camera.

I also will put together a external fan solution for use with 2K and 4K recording, just for peace of mind and to comfort the produce/director.

The C500 is too nice to give up over this annoying fan issue.
