C300: C300 mkII rumours are getting serious

I think there is a new rumor that Canon will change their c500 line into a shoulder mount to compete with the Alexa while keeping the c300's form factor the same.

Also from Canon Rumors:

We’re also told there will be some kind of an announcement for an over the shoulder style Cinema EOS camera to compete directly with Alexa. The hope is for that camera to be ready for NAB, but it could come after.

I wouldn't mind seeing both the c300 and 500 with some kind of fs7 style shoulder/lower handle option, it really does make certain types of shooting much more convenient.

I'll speculate that C500 will be a 5K/6K camera a la Red Dragon and Alexa II but at about half the price of Dragon and ... uh, 1/10th (?) the price of the 6K Alexa II. The price gap between the 300 and 500 models will also be greater than between the Mark I iterations of the same.

I think it'd be smart on Canon's part to help differentiate the c500, if they add 4k to the c300. It would also be amazing if in the future, the Cinema line could incorporate the dual native ISO tech that Panasonic developed for their new Varicam. That capability would be awesome for a weatherproofed Doc style cam.

Maybe the C300/C500 will get a new sensor and the C100 MKII will be used to "run out" the existing sensor design.
I always felt we got short changed on other C100 OG features because it used the same sensor as the C300/C500 which at the time must have been expensive to make (excellent 4k with DPAF). Total speculation of course.

I don't think there is any way Canon will release a 6K camera at 1/10 the cost of Dragon. Thats definitely just not going to happen. I wish it would...but it definitely will not.

Slightly off topic, but I thought Arri said the 65mm/6K 'Alexa' will be a rental only camera.
Yes and apparently there are only 40 of them out in the wild.

So, for all practical intents, it exists solely for the big budget Hollywood films and outside even a high end TV realm. And, the only way we can guess its price is by comparing the rental fees. And those quotes aren't given to just anyone (me being that nameless anyone). Abel Cine has an Alexa I shooting package listed at $80,000 for sale. I presume the 6K camera has, at least, a 50% premium over that when prorated over the rental agreements.

Part of this is obviously due to the availability of the various models. As I scan some LA rentals, an F55 package can be had for $800/day while C300 can go for $500, which is a different ratio than their relative MSRP's. And Alexa II has no competition on a retail level anyway.

Back to the Canon C300 II, and since this is ALL rumors. From Canon Rumors...."Canon does not see the FS7 as a competitor, as they expect their camera to be better in every way." If this is truly a positioning statement by Canon (rumor), then I expect the camera to be priced no less than 16,000.

"Shoulder mount system for EOS C300 Mark II coming"

Does this mean the camera is a shoulder mounted camera or there will be a shoulder mount setup available for it separately? I hate shoulder mounted cameras for my style of work.

Curious if the C300 II and the new RED Weapon are going to be in the same competitive ring. Both are going to rock for sure. Definitely waiting until NAB now with the RED announcement.

Ya I agree that statement seems clear that the C300II willl be F5 territory and I expect the FS7 will still be the price/feature winner but It will be exciting to see what direction Canon goes for.

I see Red is announcing a new camera also. Didn't the Dragon just come out this year to the masses?

weapon is an upgrade for dragon sensor bodies only, hardly relative to the price point of any canon cinema cameras

I don't personally mind an F5ish price if it can deliver an enhanced 10-bit 4k C300. My clients absolutely love the C-camera look and getting it in 4K is going to be important going forward. FS7 isn't the camera for me, though it's definitely a great price for a very very good camera.

You are incorrect LeoGrey. The Weapon will be offered as a full purchase as well. The price is not known...but its not just for upgrades. It will be a stand alone system to those who want to purchase outright. The upgrade is there for those who have existing Dragons. Its just not offered to MX.

If the C300 rolled out at $16 and the Weapon was in the $24K range...its a price difference, yes, but something to seriously consider. It could be relative to the C500 price point. All speculation at this point though.

Sorry...back on topic. My point is...it will be interesting to see how the C300 stacks up next to new offerings from companies like RED. I hope it does. Very excited about the C300 II.
