C300: C300 MK II vs. C500 w/ 7Q+

I'm thinking the Pix E5 cannot record 4k out of the cinema cameras since it can only record 4k through hdmi. I'm really hoping that Sound Devices enables 4k recording through the dual sdi inputs on the E7 that should be coming out soon. The new pix-E's seem like such a great product but the lack of 4k through sdi makes them seem outdated.

Don't know if the 7Q can record 4K prores out of the C500- that's a question for Mitch of CD. My understanding is that the 7Q cannot, where-as it can record 4K out of FS700 and FS7 via RAW to Prores. No idea about Shogun. I thought the Video Devices Pix E5 can record 4K prores out of C500, not positive though. The later 2014 firmware upgrade on the C500 did not fix the fan issue to my satisfaction.

YES, the Odyssey7Q can record 4K ProRes in 4:2:2HQ flavor from C500 & C300mk2 and RAW, up to 30fps now, 60fps later for C500 only. I've done it many times, from both of these cameras. Even today! (Yes, I own C300mk2 & Odyssey7Q w/RAW license)

YES, the Shogun can now record 4K ProRes from C500 & C300mk2, RAW is coming later afaik. One SDI plug = 30fps is max also for C500.

YES, the KiPro Quad can record 4K ProRes from C500 and probably C300mk2 too, up to 30fps. No upgrade to RAW planned afaik (SSD speed too slow)

No, the Video Devices Pix E5 or the E5H are baseband video recorders and can NOT record 4K from a C500 or a C300mk2 because neither camera outputs baseband 4K on any ports. Just 4K RAW over SDI from both cameras. And yes, if you read some blogs you'll see that some Canon reps talked earlier about baseband 4K coming out of the HDMI port on C300mk2, but that hasn't materialized yet and it's not clear if it will. I have no idea if Video Devices plan on upgrading the Pix E series recorders to handle RAW to ProRes (obviously not the E5H since there's no RAW over HDMI)

No, the Ninja Assassin can NOT record 4K ProRes from C300mk2, even though Atomos says it can. There's no 4K HDMI coming out of the Canon C300mk2 so nothing to record from! There's no 4K HDMI on the C500 either, btw.

Hope that helps!

hey parrot, you say the SDI from the C300 mii can only output 4k raw? which means only 7Q can accept the signal? are you able to mount a PIX-E5/7 to get pro res 4k out of the C300 ii's SDI output?

i assume since the SDI from the canon can output a 10bit signal, shouldn't all recorders capable of 4k pro res recording work? unless i am totally off base...

also when you get a chance can you provide some download samples of the XFAVC file? would like to hear your thoughts too on grading the 10bit vs 12bit internal codec, cheers :)

That helps immensely. I've been living in a cave this year.
When did CD enable Canon RAW to Prores? I asked Mitch earlier this year and it didn't happen yet. Notice any difference between Proress 422HQ and internal XFAVC files?

Its just C300 II - cant do 4k 60p in or out ! and its been confirmed by Mitch several times already

As I wrote above, the C300mk2 and C500 do not output any 4K/UHD baseband video, only RAW at 4K/UHD resolutions. So your 4K/UHD recorders for C300mk2 & C500 must be able to handle RAW. PixE5/7 are currently not capable of handling RAW, only regular baseband video. Odyssey7Q/Shogun/KiProQuad takes the RAW signal and converts it to ProRes baseband video. Other recorders are not capable of this.

C300mk2 and C500 outputs baseband video at HD & 2K resolutions at up to 12bit RGB, so that you could record with a PixE5/7.

We added Canon Cine RAW -> Apple ProRes last December. It was featured in the video we made to introduce the Odyssey7Q+, In the Garden of the Gods.

Yes- you mentioned that back in Dec. Like I said, I've been living in a (corporate) cave this year. Sense of time and space has evaporated...

While the Odyssey7Q & Odyssey7Q+ can record Canon Cine RAW in 4K & QHD up to 60p or "half RAW" to 120p (the tops speeds of the C500), currently in RAW->ProRes the fastest available frame rate is 30p.

I just found that table: https://convergent-design.com/canon-eos-c300

what is half raw?
there is a way to get 4k 60fps raw on the canon c300 m2 plus odyssey 7Q+? but no prores?

These monitor/recorder companies and their chart specs (or the way they format them) can be a bit confusing, but the half-raw HFR might only apply to the C500. If you scroll up a bit, there is a little section that shows you what the C300 Mark II specs are via 7Q:

CANON Cinema RAW data is recorded as .RMF files.
4K RAW to 4K Apple ProRes / 10-Bit / 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30
QHD RAW to UHD Apple ProRes / 10-Bit / 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30
4K/QHD RAW / 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97, 30
2K/1080p 12-bit/10-bit 4:4:4 support / 23.98, 24, 25, 29.97

Sorry for the confusion from our web page. The Record Time Chart is a master chart that is used on a number of pages and in our manual. It refers to what can be done with a given format but is not specifically broken down to individual cameras. The section shown refers to what can be done in Canon RAW format, but it covers both the C300mkII as well as the C500. The C300mkII does not offer 4K above 30p and does not offer the "half RAW" format.

Video Devices PIX-E7 ($1,695) will record (up to) 12-bit ProRes 444 HQ via the 6G SDI.

I am not sure about the compatibility with the Canon SDI output though.

The Canon C300mkII does not utilize 6G-SDI. It uses 3G-SDI outputs.

The Odyssey7Q+ can record 12-bit Apple ProRes 4444(XQ) and ProRes 4444 via single-link 6G-SDI or dual-link 3G-SDI.

Meet DLD - Video Devices' Mitch Gross. lol
Where's my commission check???

Ah, this reminds me of my old days in retail.

The Canon C300mkII does not utilize 6G-SDI. It uses 3G-SDI outputs.

The Odyssey7Q+ can record 12-bit Apple ProRes 4444(XQ) and ProRes 4444 via single-link 6G-SDI or dual-link 3G-SDI.

So, then someone might want something like this -

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/prod..._design_convmsdimux4k_mini_converter_sdi.html

In theory that might work, but I have never tried it for converting 4:4:4 signal carriers. There are a few variations to this (which is why we had to make a special mode to support the F35). Not saying it won't work, just noting that one should test before planning on it.

And of course it does mean another $470 spent and another device to lug around and provide power to.

Hi Mitch or anyone who kmows - quick question as this is not clear to me - I am setting up a C500 & 7Q+ and I am trying to figure out if the 7Q+ will record a 4K Pro Res file from the C500 without purchasing the raw bundle upgrade for the 7Q+? thanks.

I don't think it can CW 35 because you need to convert the raw to pro res and thats part of the bundle. Can do up to 2k tho which is the cameras sweet spot the 444 12 bit Thanks
