C100: C100 Killer?

"Shipping in July again? Really? LOL!

They've certainly improved delivery times from those BMCC glory days though :)

Each time I read a post of yours, your sig has me nodding in agreement. I wondering now though whether that mythical cam is coming. The Mini will shoot 4k in whatever flavour you desire, with a base iso above 800 (according to John Brawley), offspeed options to satisfy 95% of us, a 1080p 5" monitor, 2 xlrs, and a colour science which has few peers. Not to mention greater dr than the pocket and BMCC (is it 2 more stops? we'll see) and a form factor which looks very useable.

People keep pointing to the lack of NDs as a failing (and I've certainly appreciated them in the C100)...though I think even if you throw on a decent variable ND you're probably still ahead of any sub 20k camera, imagewise. I guess a (strong) argument can be made for other cameras low light abilities, if you really need to shoot at 5000 iso. That said, I remember the test comparing the 5d Mark 3 and the BMCC in lowlight, and even when pushed, the BMCC held a sizable edge in colour fidelity.

I was going to buy the MK2 in June but now I am not. If it had 4k recording I would have probably still considered it.

I have a C100 mki and all I want is 60p. But the mkii seems like a bit of a cost stretch for that one feature, since I own an a7s.

Ursa mini looks great but no ND is such a problem for me. I think the footage looks nice so far, reliability is still a big question. C300 mkii images have not impressed me sadly, I was really looking forward to that camera.

I'll let other people play this game. I'm just gonna stay with what I have. 4k is not something I have any interest in right now because of data rates.

I'm with you, I would like to see the C300 mk2 in another DPs hands because Trick Shot had me very unimpressed. Now the new URSA's release video on the other hand has me very excited. Those skin tones look gorgeous.

theoI agree, I shot with the icon for about an hour yesterday, while it has a great form factor it it doesn't have great latitude. But it is loaded with a bunch of ports. Don't get me wrong, it's a nice cam, but with all the other offerings now their going to need to lower the price to have any chance at competing with the other companies.

The 60i to 24p trick isn't doing it for you?

It works in a pinch. I use it because I don't want to match colors from the a7s to C100 for verite scenes and often need ND to shoot wide open. But when I was cutting my most recent highlight reel I notice a big difference from 60i to 24p. Part of it is because it's interlaced, and part of it's the bit rate, but when you add a small curve the image goes to hell. C300mki at 720p is honestly not any better.

I think I've finally got a look on my a7s that is a good match to the C100 where I might just carry it on jobs for the occasional slo-mo b-roll.

Some people buy specs. Others buy cameras that actually are functional for professional work. I'll let you decide which is which.

Yes, but that doesn't mean the Ursa Mini or a combination of new cameras won't kill the C100. The sub $10K market is more value conscious.

IMHO: Are there enough "professionals" out there who are in the 2015/2016 market who want to buy a shiny new HD AVCHD camcorder? The low end will go for more bang-for-buck, the higher end will probably wait for the C300 MKII. Personally I don't see Canon sustaining sales without a price drop.

The RED Scarlet was supposed to be the C300 killer. Post after post mocking the C300 specs compared to the Scarlet. We all know how that turned out.

There's a current (through June, 30) $500 rebate on A7s + Q7 combo on B&H (and, I assume, via other retailers as well). It has to be rigged up, obviously, as a shoulder cam but, IMO, it was the best value-for-quality combo before anyway.

A C200 would kill right about now. sigh.
Well, my (conspiracy) theory is that C200 can't happen for the same reasons AF200 can't happen - the Japanese conglomerates are protecting each other for the time being. This is why you're seeing such serious spec superiority from the likes of BMD and KineRaw - they are not in the cartel and can underbid its members.

At some point, naturally, the market matures and then is subsequently flooded with the competing models.

Yea but they really are two different cameras made to do different things. The comparison was flawed in the first place. I see no reason that the URSA Mini won't stop some people from buying the C100, I know it stopped me from doing it.

BMD historically has not had great low light performance. Depending on the types of shoots you commonly do, this is a major factor. Personally, I have no problem paying a premium for Canon just for the solidity of their products....as conservative as they are. I, personally, am not entertaining any of BMDs new offerings...though I do respect what they are doing. I may pay more attention in the years to come. For now, its just fun to watch their development from the outside.

Yeah, those that tout a Blackmagic camera as the "C100 Killer" should really USE a Blackmagic camera for a while. Apples and dump trucks.

That is true for there older cameras, I would like to see how the Mini changes things with the new form factor. I will say this if I could afford a Mini AND a Mark II I would have both.

I shoot with both brands and it's a pretty simple distinction.
The Canon offers a more refined camera with a more limited "back end" with codecs.
The Black Magic cameras offer an equally great but different image with a superior back end with raw and ProRes.

FWIW, a simply rigged BM camera (pre-Ursa) is a very easy tool to shoot with since all of the firmware upgrades.
A wealth of choices - just choose the ones that you prefer to work with.
