C100: C100 evf Eyecup

to be clear, im referring to the glass that the diopter lever is moving when you move the lever. im not talking about broken loose, just loose enough to rattle when you shake the baby

I finally worked up the nerve to pull the eyepiece off. Comes off near the base of the handle. Goes back on no problem. Definitely looks like there's potential for a third party like Hoodman to make a better eyepiece.

Well, it is not as if this is the best camera Canon could build if they wanted to.

I'd say they have given us what they think belongs in an entry level EOS Cinema camera.

The small and poor EVF is decidedly a thought through design decision.

Then someone should be looking for a new job.

To me it is unusable, "entry" eos camera or not.

I agree with you, Matt. The EVF is not usable, i bought a zacuto evf soon after getting the camera... I wished they didn't include this poor evf and changed the design of the sound cable, so it wouldn't stick out of the camera body the way it does...

that said, awesome camera. Love, love, love the form factor!

Can someone please explain what this means? Does it mean not pressing your eye against the EVF?

Turn head sidewise and then press cheek against body so viewfinder against eye while nose projects to one side.

Use camera as projection of head movement, not as soemthing you look into.

Just went the eye cushion route for 7 bones and it works a treat...no light leaking and heaps more comfy.

While the evf is small, with peaking and the occasional hit of the magnify button, I find it totall usable.

Yew!

What brand/model did you get? Does it stay attached securely? Could you add a link?

Small HD Eyepiece Solution

Small HD Eyepiece Solution

I think I have a good solution for this problem, or as good as it can get, under the circumstances. I recently got a SmallHD DP4 EVF. It came with an old style asymmetrical eyecup as well as the new round one. First I slipped the old one on over the C100 eyepiece, and voila, a really cool looking, functional eyepiece that leaked just a little light in on the left side but stuck on really good and could be repositioned to fit my face better. Not bad. Then I pulled it off and put on the new circular one. Wow, now this is a whole different ball game. The new eyepiece seems like it should be standard issue for the C100, it actually makes the EVF, well, into some kind of EVF. It doesn't stay on quite as well as the old DP4 eyepiece, but I think a simple rubber band or some such would secure it well enough. Now if Magic Lantern will just hack us some firmware to give us a waveform on that tiny little screen, we'd be in business. I don't know if SmallHD might be willing to sell their eyepieces alone, but the DP4 EVF is an awesome piece of equipment for the C100 anyway, so the next time you feel like upgrading, I would say it's a worthy consideration.
