C100: C100 evf Eyecup

Hi all,

I am still deciding on what camera but the C100 is high on the list. The main thing holding me back is I have reservations about the evf (I like using them).

Just wondering if anyone has used one of these (the DV model seems to be best suited) http://www.i-cuff.com/buy.html .

Do you think this would help the evf pass as usable?

Cheers,

Phil

The issues with the EVF have to do with placement (too close to the body, so your face ends up against the camera and LCD if you're not careful. It doesn't move so it's stationary, and the quality of it is just so-so. If you really like using an EVF the C100 really isn't for you, or you'll need to attach one like a Zacuto or something. You'll have to figure out if that's necessary or not and C100 owners can chime in, but I just got my C300 yesterday and the EVF on there is AWESOME. I love it.

If Canon were smart they would have made a small port on all the C cameras that could link to a dedicated external EVF with a great mounting solution. Kinda like RED's bomb EVF but smaller. Canon makes a removable side handle and top handle, but can't make a removable EVF?

They will though. The Sony did and Canon will have to follow. Panny... No idea where you are. Selling buildings I guess...Poor Panasonic. I do what them to play.

Have you actually used the Canon C100? While a Zacuto Z Finder will be great, when they finally ship, the Canon C100 EVF is about all that I use when I shoot outdoors. The trick is to look through the EVF as you would with a DSLR, not a ENG video cam. When you do that it is really pretty decent. But only if you do that. I prefer it to the LCD when shooting outdoors. The only problem is that the WFM is not visible in the EVF.

When I first tested a prototype EVF I hated it, and said so very publicly. Now, the quality of the EVF seems to be better, and I started to use it like a DSLR EVF. I think a lot of the EVF's reputation stems from the prototype C100s. It is infinitely better than our old FS100, and better than our old XF100. Subtle chages were made. Use it on its terms and it will serve you well.

the C100 suffers becuase the C300 EVF is exceptional. the C100 EVF does not compare to the C300. But then the C300 cost more than twice as much. Compare it to other cameras in the same price range, the FS100/700, and the C100 is superior.

I found the EVF hard to use outside in the sun. I was getting so much light leak making it hard to see what I was shooting. A simple eyecup would solve this. The EVF image quality is pretty good.

Magnification doesn't work when the LCD is flipped open. I couldn't find a setting in the menu to change this.

The C100 is a very nice camera and I wish I could buy one to replace my AF-100. The image alone is a good reason to upgrade but some missing features bugs me. Canon is making it hard for me to pull the trigger. Darn you Canon!!! :)

I keep one of these extra small Eye Cushions in my bag just in case I have a problem with the C300 and need to use the C100 via it's EVF. It's not the most secure fitting but it stays on fairly well. The most important thing is that it allows you to use the EVF in comfort and block out external light.

To me, the poor EVF is the huge, glaring weakness of the C100. I wish Canon had put better effort into this, especially on a large sensor camera capable of tight DoF. Personally, I rarely use a camera's flip-out monitor to compose a shot or to check focus; I need my reading glasses to see that, and I hate wearing my glasses on a shoot.

But if there's an aftermarket EVF hood, that would make the C100 more desirable.

The only problem that would come up in designing an eyecup is how small the the EVF is. I don't know the exact size but the square frame is so small that you have to have your eye very close.

Paul's eye cushion looks promising.

Can the handle be attached with the cushion?

question for other c100 owners: is your evf glass loose? as in if you shake the camera even lightly, you hear it rattling around?

Well, it is not as if this is the best camera Canon could build if they wanted to.

I'd say they have given us what they think belongs in an entry level EOS Cinema camera.

The small and poor EVF is decidedly a thought through design decision. It works in favor of the smaller package, but also keeps it well below the C300 in that regard.

I also tried to remove the eyecup but it is fixed in place. Something similar to Paul's solution, but perhaps a bit more robust is the best we can hope for.
