Break-in...

That some would think this a stunt is kind of predictable.
Perhaps that was the intent of the break in.
The reaction to those who've said so is also kind of predictable.
Both sides of the argument could well be doing exactly what the perpetrators wanted.

We all love a good who-dun-it....

Mr. Jannard, Perhaps you should direct your anger and frustration at yourself for not protecting your assets better. In the future, I recommend that you sit beside your valuables while you're reading and contributing to these forums. That should keep them within sight 24 hours a day. The lady doth protest too much, methinks.

Whow, now that´s a nice thing to say to a crime victim.

Just catching up now.

I would just like to wish Red the best of luck in dealing with this atrocity. I hope that reward check gets cashed soon and no valuable information gets into the hands of those who could seriously undermine your work.

If I wasn't on the otherside of the world, I would come and sweep up glass.

To our new friends from cinematography.com:

While my first instinct is to ask why you care (not being a red supporters and all) it is all to obvious that what you really need right now is... support and understanding. Yes, I am sorry that Jim released that 4k image today. That was just cruel and unthoughtful of him. Did he once consider how it would make you and your friends feel? He's just a mean, mean man. And how dare he make a big deal about being robbed, when the real crisis is that your argument against red is falling apart. That's gonna hurt, and we understand. So let it out. Let it all out. I'm sure Jim will even let you kick him a little, 'cause it just hurts so bad. We're here for you bros. But go away.

I know it's hard guys but lets just ignore the rude and insulting posts and give red all the support we can

First, to Mr Jannard and the entire RED Team - heartfelt condolences and best wishes. May our small band's shared sense of outrage be of some small comfort to you and your team.

I am sure that some of the posts here and on other sites have sorely tested any belief that you could possibly be members of the same specie. But you knew you were different long before this - that's why they hate you.

Second, to all you liberal posters who sincerely believe that if you leave your keys in your car and it's stolen then it's obviously your fault and you should be held morally or even criminally liable, I can only hope that you or your family are never forced to experience the soul wrenching sense of intimate mental and physical violation an act like this evokes.

If you have not yet done so, please consider relocating to places like Portland or Boston where you may revel in the companionship of like minded socialists. May you never come to understand that a liberal is simply a conservative who's never been mugged.

... and don't even DARE think of buying a RED - you're not worthy.

Just read this rather shocking news. But here's a thought. If it was stolen by a souvenier hunter, its likely to show up. $100,000 reward will be tempting to take. They will think up a plan. " Hey man, I was just walking down the street and went to throw my empty Coke can in the bin when something caught my eye. I reached in and saw it was a camera and some papers". I claim my reward.

If its industrial espianage, just clean up the glass, change the locks, stick 24 hour security on the doors and put it down to experience. At the end of the day no one was killed or hurt, and the camera won't be delayed.

If it was the opposition, they will all be buying the camera anyway once released and disecting it to see how it works.

Good luck with getting back on schedule.

OMFG! This is really bad news! As Ted says - equipment can be replaced - but it's more the fact that someone has been carefully planning something like this that's truly scary - corporate espionage or not.

Jim - my deepest sympathy for what has happened. I sure don't hope that this means you won't be as open and sharing with us here at DVXUser as you've already been.

It is bad, bad news! But it is also good news because it is sure sign that you have an superior product! My guess is that it is done by criminals who wants to sell it to your competition. Friend of mine who visited IBC was told that one other company is making similar camera, but the person did not revel the name. May be you should inquire in this direction. It seams logical given the fact that no one ever herd of such endeavor so far. Good luck with this anyway!

There´s something nearly everybody´s missing in the scenario of industrial espionage by one of the "big guys", this camera is mainly going to be a threat to them because it´ll be so "cheap" that they never will be able to compete, because most of the time the big names offered overpriced, underperforming stuff - do your really think anybody will steal RED´s knowledge to fabricate something that produces thin, no ( or most likely ) negative margins for them ( who have massive overhead costs ? )
Maybe it´s only some kind of checking-out, to know how big the "threat" is, who knows ?

K.

I'm truly sorry you guys got hit. If it's any consolation my powerbook got stolen two weeks ago, obvious economies of scale aside I had to reorganize my entire life around the possibility that some asshole had my SS# and every other sensitive piece of info you could imagine. I feel for you guys.
I'm just bummed I missed the chance to ban Lakmir0.

LOL Great post!!!

That aside, I hope RED caughts the thieves quickly, and I'm very curious to who was behind this. It's great that RED will not be delayed.
My support to RED.

Looking forward to that post titled: 'theives caught, prototype safe, files recovered'.

good luck and invest in sharks with laser beams for future prototypes security areas.

Jim and the Red team- Keep it up! Unfortunatelly, I still can't afford your wonderful camera, and I bought an HVX. Each day I'm learning and earning more in this transitional HD era, and I sincerely hope that I will be able to afford your system in 2 years time.

I hope that, by then, the RED had made the big corporations reduce their high end machine's ridiculous prices (including decks). I dream of the day of a AJ HD 1400 dvcpro hd deck for 5000 dollars, Or a Competing Sony Cinelata with HDCAM SR recording at 17 000 dollars...

This would be the day that TALENT and CREATIVITY would be the biggest driving force of this industry, and not money and lobbies...

Keep up the good work, RED TEAM! We are with you! It's not over untill the fat lady (or ladies) sings! (And they will surelly sing in pain when you finish your project :) )

Or he could spend the bulk of his wealth in an effort to help mankind.

This sort of suggestion makes me ill to my guts.

Because when people suggest it, they never follow it to the logical extreme they're suggesting. Which is... are you doing everything personally you can to help "mankind"? Why stop with Jim J.? Shouldn't this also apply to yourself?

I mean, you live in the industrialized West, and compared to third world conditions you're rich beyond dreams. Maybe you should give everything you have past the bare minimum you need to survive in order to "help mankind"?

But wait, even better, why should you even determine what the amount you need to survive is? Maybe someone should tell you what that bare minimum is, and take away everything beyond that, to "help mankind". Limit individual success, and distribute the profits "fairly".

To Jim Jannard and the RED team... the violation you feel is felt by all of us here who understand.

To my friend and others with better ideas on the distribution of wealth...Go read "The Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged", 'cause I cast myself with that damned selfish lot and consider them good company.

Good man Jim.... Well said.. And I'm glad you said it.. Might want to take a quick jaunt over to the idiots at Cinematography.com and say the same

Sorry to hear about the break in. Obviously you are doing the right thing at the right time. People are begining to pay attention.

The stills from the camera are amazing!

Keep up the good work. A lot of us are looking forward to working with your camera.

There is one big reason and many small reasons that this is very unlikely a hoax. The big reason is "THE LAW".

Faking a crime including making public announcements especially if you file insurance claim or any other act resulting in money changing hands you will get fraud and/or conspiracy charges. Plus, it's just flat out illegal in some jurisdictions I believe (I'm not a lawyer or prosecutor but there are plenty of cases on google).

So unless RED/Jim are complete idiots (complete idiots generally don't build cameras, the U-Matic 3/4" camera & deck that crushed my spine in the 80s being the exception ), staging a robbery, calling the police, offering a reward, contacting news etc., filing insurance would put them in a world of hurt, much more than just saying "development failed, no camera ever."

The wacko conspirators everwhere nuts do have a misguided point that Jim's announcement is unusual by corporate standards (in that he made one as opposed to keeping it quiet), but given RED's approach, it makes sense.

Once they filed a police report, it's public record and since RED is being scrutinized heavily, the info would have been out shortly in the media and RED would have been in defense.

Putting the story out themselves quickly with "we are still 100% on track" & reward offer is an smart offensive move and just good PR (in the best sense of that phrase) which alas, most corporations, suck at. RED has always been on the offensive and been stunningly open about their development process from the beginning.

And finally, Jim is obviously extremely aware of the postive benefits of the Internet community - the best chance he has of finding the perps and embarrassing any other company that potentially might be involved is getting the word out to as many people as possible and offering a fat big reward.

I just think everyone should stop dignifying the idiotic accusations with "explanations". To be perfectly honest, besides sympathy and concern, its none of anyones goddamn business. Unless they want to come forward with some helpful information or leads.

I just read the thread over at cinematography.com and boy do they sound like a bunch of bitter souls. They were beyond rude to Jim and calling Teds post "spam". Dissapointing because I thought those folks were OK. Obviously far from.
