Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Holy moly. I read the first 30 pages or so, but I'm a bit short on time so I didn't read the rest. Has the low light capability of this cam been discussed at length w/ or w/o footage? Because while I appreciate that there's a backlash against the whole "low light!!!!111!!!" thing, there are still good reasons for those of us who need that capability - if you need to shoot in dark spaces which are very hard to light, and your lighting options are limited, you have little choice but to rely on your cam low light capabilities. So, with all due apologies, has the low-light aspect been addressed? Thx!

Supposedly it can go up to 1600ISO, and BM are working on making it a cleaner image before release.

From the tech specs:

Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference here? RAW files recorded at full res, but shooting RAW compresses to 1080p? I am confused by this wording.

I'm hoping its:

DNGs at 2.5K

ProRes at 1080p (Thus easily in and out through final cut. For some reason my final cut hates anything other than the standard HD sizes and refuses to render them..)

Assuming that is the case, wouldn't that mean that the RAW capture at full res is using the entire sensor? Not just the "active" / 1080 section? I really am out of my knowledge element here.

I never really got a response here, can anyone help me feel less stupid?

2.5K is raw

Compressed is log Prores or avid file formats.

Both use the same sensor area, apparently.

Kholi, any word yet if it can do 48P/50P/60P in a ProRes wrapper or via some sort of resolution downscale?

As much as I want it too, I dont think it can happen with this iteration. If it does I'll take it as a freebie. I'm signing up for what's announced now and anything extra is icing.

GH2 has 60. I'm sure it'll cut just fine for those specific shots.

I don't know that we'll have confirmation until it comes from either someone shooting with the camera for from BM, but I'm willing to bet:

They are giving the entire active sensor area for RAW.

They are scaling that for compressed formats. Not windowing.

Guys....

You're reading a lot into images which are made by a very early camera.

The camera currently has a similar black spot issue with extreme brightness objects like the sun...just like early RED.

They know about it and are onto it. I think this i saw this happening in resolve when I was grading.....caused by what Iw as doing in the grade more or less....

I understand completely. As long as they're aware of it, I'm a happy camper. And thank you so much for shooting the test footage! I just can't help but pixel peep the footage we have so far from such a promising camera. Everything you shot looks phenomenal, and I can't wait until I have one of my own (hopefully with a Micro 4/3 mount!) to shoot in both RAW and in ProRes. This camera really does seem like the indie-filmmaker's dream cam. As I said before, I feel like Blackmagic has completely stolen the spotlight at this year's NAB. If a Micro 4/3 version comes out, I'm ditching my GH2 in a heartbeat.

Thank you, Simon. Well, that will be interesting. I'm pretty happy with the GH2, but man, if this cam can do much better in low light, the additional $2K is totally worth it to me for the greater DR alone. Of course, again, this is the romance stage, where you have not yet lived with your LOVED ONE :), so the warts may come out later... banding, noise, weird artifacts and the rest. No cam is perfect, but there are always workarounds. For now, I just need to know what the cam's capable of under ideal circumstances - for real life feedback, we still have to wait.

I prefer BMC as it's shorter than all previous offerings. In fact sod it, just represent the camera with an exclamation mark it's that awesome.

Man i love ! it's sweet.

If that's the case, what is the point of having a larger sensor than the "active area"? Is there a stills mode?

Yeah they were lacking a little imagination (and marketing nous) when it came to the name... Luckily they weren't lacking imagination when it came to 12 Bit RAW for 3K!
