Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

Re RAW vs compressed: BMD CEO gave a couple of on-camera interview/demos and said RAW is 2.5k DNG, and compressed formats are 1080 and can be dropped right into FCP, Premiere and Avid. In one interview he was asked about the ProRes flavor, and he was taken off-guard. He answered 4:2:2 HQ, but didn't seem sure. Naturally, I'd prefer 4:4:4.

yes, Pro-res 4:4:4 in camera would be amazing, but what would be even more amazing is being able to choose between 4:2:2 and 4:4:4 Prores

I understand completely. As long as they're aware of it, I'm a happy camper. And thank you so much for shooting the test footage! I just can't help but pixel peep the footage we have so far from such a promising camera. Everything you shot looks phenomenal, and I can't wait until I have one of my own (hopefully with a Micro 4/3 mount!) to shoot in both RAW and in ProRes. This camera really does seem like the indie-filmmaker's dream cam. As I said before, I feel like Blackmagic has completely stolen the spotlight at this year's NAB. If a Micro 4/3 version comes out, I'm ditching my GH2 in a heartbeat.

No need to ditch your GH2. :)

I think that we're going to find that this cam isn't particularly good in low light. Some folks simply won't do a shoot where they don't have complete control over lighting. (That's the way the big boys do it....nice.) For the more "run and gun" / "indi-minded" folks, STELLAR low-light performance is key. That said, low-light performance has no bearing for me on this cam. I'll just pony up my NEX5N, with F.95, and a 360 degree shutter and call it a day. You might find that the low-light performance on that GH2 will come in handy in a pinch.

I'm not dissing your comment, I'm just saying that at $3K....we can ALL AFFORD to hold on to gear and use it where it makes sense. When your paying $12-20K for your camera, that is much harder to do....(you kinda gotta sell everything you can to afford *just* the camera.) Looks like those days are over. I'm looking forward to the GH3 and the next hack that it brings with it. Hopefully they'll improve low-light improvements and who knows what else it will be better at?

Cheers Jaime!

Hands on was nice. I couldn't find any noticeable aliasing on the camera monitor. Rolling shutter was annoying, but I've learned to deal with that since I bought my 5D a few years ago. I like the menu and touch screen. I think I'll spend my money elsewhere, but I cannot deny the vacuum this camera is filling perfectly.

Dan May, President of BMD said that users will have to buy lenses and SSDs. No SSD included.

How about "Black One"?

RED probably won't mind the obvious takeoff.

Jarred Land, from REDUser (I think it would be ok to post a quote from the owner of Landmine Media":

"We love Blackmagic.. we been fans of them for years. It is nice to have another company in the game that is willing to shake things up and not follow the "rules" :)"

They don't want to talk about the camera on that site, but that's just the rule over there. That doesn't mean they are afraid of it or even see it as serious competition. They left the space open when they decided to drop Scarlet Fixed and there are no signs they want that market segment back. Good for them that the BM camera will get lower end users to get to know the advantages of RAW workflow.

I don't know what corporate philosophy was guiding BM when they designed this, but I love the approach. Take commodity components that match performance well, stick them into a minimalist box, and make it all work (knock on wood) with custom firmware. They make a groundbreaking Toyota Prius, while RED makes the Ferrraris - or something like that.

I'll keep my DSLR as an option. It'd be like switching film stock. 50D for exterior and 500T for night. Does it intercut? No. Does it matter? Not really. Just like the good old days...

For the name, I've got Blagic, Black One and BM-1.

Was the rolling shutter an issue? I haven't noticed it so far.

Fair enough, but it should be noted that the one thread they didn't close labeled the BMCC a "toy" and said "the iPad crowd is gonna love it". :thumbdown

Moving on, anyone got word yet on whether there is a SSD included with the purchase? I've heard conflicting reports.

EDIT: I like mine better: BLACK CAMERA!!!!!!
Or maybe "Black Camera"???

Out of BLACK CAMERA!!!!!! or Black Camera??? I'd have to go with the first. The second raises too many questions.

(trying hard to delete this post :))

Can we end the "name of the camera" posts?

If you want to discuss that subject, I suggest starting a separate thread.

There are nearly a thousand posts to this point in this thread, and interested parties shouldn't be put through a series of posts suggesting names in order to learn information about the cam.

Thanks
