Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

Dustylense had a big point: you can't judge rolling shutter of a camera out of a recording from a camera that has rolling shutter. If this clip was recorded with a 5D2, you're basically adding the RS of the pocket BMC to a percentage of the RS of the 5D2 (a bigger percentage the more part of the 5D2 frame that the pBMC screen is taking) --> no wonder it looks awful!

Thats very true. I would like to withdrawl my previous shocked comment regarding the seemingly excessive degree of rolling shutter that the camera *appeared* to be showing. There are too many variables there to really say much of anything, and in retrospect, I clearly overdramatized the issue a bit. Apologies.

Nah! Just the usual nonsense that follows the announcement of a hot new camera, or in this case two. It is just "talk" from "the experts" here. In the meantime you have Brawley, LaForet and company doing the real work out there. In the case of Black Magic Brawley is the real deal, everybody else here is on the outside looking in. Once he reports we will have real details. In the meantime enjoy the circus atmosphere.

+1

Rest assured though, the Pocket looks just as nice as the BMCC….

There is a moderate speed panning segment at 3:06 on the video at entry #556 on this thread.
The RS doesn't look too bad.

John (Caballero) wrote that 'cause of another poster connected with Digital Bolex was bashing Blackmagic Design, nothing else I guess :-)

Why does he (Brawley) say in that post that when the new bmc is released it probably won't have raw, just pro res? (first time I heard that...)

SD cards are too slow to write uncompressed DNG too. The compressed DNG they talk about may not work either except with the very fastest UDMA7 careds, but it is in development.

That's just in the case of the pocket cam...the production 4K camera won't have it to start either, from what he says. The appeal of the pocket cam for me is the high quality 4:2:2 Pro Res on board. Better than anything anywhere close to the price. If I wanted raw, I would have waited until it was ready. But for me raw is just not something I want to deal with, I just want great quality in a ready to edit format.

Both BM products are really hot. But what I wonder is when we will we be able to get one.

My plan had been to get a Panasonic GH2 and hack it for a project I'm shooting. Got quite excited with the BM Pocket, but then I realized getting is really a fantasy. BM says end of July, but I wonder...

Now what I would like to know is this: the RED project, IMHO, sort of forced Sony to release high end products that were more realistically priced. Where are those that should have followed the BM camera release in 2012?

Is there anyone working on high quality affordable products to share the market chunk BM has created?

Non-DSLR cameras such as the GH, or some Sonys or some Olympus look as the right basis to create a Pocket clone from. Going on a different to what Canon seems to be following with their separate DSLR and video camera products.

I would get a used GH2 body for now…the 4/3 lenses you purchase will work with the BM pocket cam. I use a GH2 for video right now. I have a pocket cam on order. I can see the future where I will still be using the GH2, the pocket cam and eventually get the BM 4k cam.

There was talk from one of the beta testers? that he hoped to show some Pocket footage before the end of NAB..... anyone know if this materialised or not and if so were?
Cheers

It makes more sense as a Pro Res camera. Give the GH3 and Sony NEX cams some competition in that price range.

John Brawley has had the camera and should have something soon...I've just been checking his blog periodically.

Pity that I lost the chance to get a new GH2 selling in Argentina. And I'm aware the GH2 lenses can fit the Pocket and the BMCv1 version. That's why I was interested in that GH2.

If you look at a video that was posted one of the BM people did comfirm that a DNG would be includes in the version that are giong to be shipped in hopfully July , maybe at the time Brawley was told that they were not giong to and he was only testing the proto type version , we near know how or why maany companies do what they do .
