Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

True, each new camera has a ton of reaction/overreaction now. I do see the Pocket cam in particular as something very unprecedented though.
Here are some firsts for a camera anywhere near it's price point:
1. 13 stops of DR
2. Compressed raw
3. 10 bit 4:2:2

And from the Purely subjective file: Arguably the most film like image anywhere near it's price.(judging footage from the same sensor in the BMCC)

For reference, I've never pre ordered anything in my life, but I believe this thing is a revelation for no budget/low budget films/projects.

Barry Green has an outline for the "Camera release cycle", and it's point-for-point accurate, has been for several years. This cycle isn't new, it also comes with familiar characters that change actors every time:

There're a few e-Nostradamus types here to tell us how things will be for other companies, there's the Selflessly Concerned All Seeing Eye that just wants you to spend your money the right way (his/her way), the Seemingly Neutral Broken Record who's posts you can find on every forum, and they read nearly the exact same way on every single one, the Just Shoot(or) Shut-upper, and a few others. Some of them wear multiple hats. I've been one of 'em before, too! It's hard not to get caught up in the excitement and it would certainly be a lie to say that it's not entertaining. =D

Have been mostly reading everything Blackmagic specific, went to NAB today to say Hi to people, the team, and let some people hold the MFT Blackmagic with the SLRMagic 25/0.95 on it.

Let a few people hold it right next to the Pocket Camera to compare so that they wouldn't have to jump back and forth, it raised some more excitement for the camera.

Blackmagic's booth, of nearly every booth, had the most consistent traffic, non-stop rush to see everything that they had to offer and of course the cameras. People like what they're doing, I like what they're doing and I like the camera, that's shipping right now, more than ever. Once Moire's sorted out (by whatever means) then it'll be pretty perfect for myself.

If it doesn't work for someone else or even the majority, well hope you find a tool that suits!

For those that are jumping in on the Pocketcam and 4K Cameras, it may not come immediately but it will, hope you like it but either way at least you tried it. =D

And yeah, adding Pocketcam and 4K to go right alongside my MFT Blackmagic. Lots of fun to be had and dollars to be recouped.

You never stopped being one of 'em Kholi :p

I wouldn't call 25ms (same as 5D MKII) rolling shutter pretty perfect. but you get what you pay for (eventually).

Here's my actual quote:

If rolling shutter ever becomes an issue (hasn't as of now, don't care about it, doesn't stop anyone from doing what they should be doing) then when July comes, it won't be an issue anymore. Just switch camera bodies.

If only it were that simple, I have six cameras and I'm not perfectly happy with any of them!

Hmmm, my interest is peaked. I was a smidge snarky in my response above... sorry 'bout that. I am curious though, what would make you perfectly happy with a camera?

Huhm, I don't think its offtopic. The reason we even have the BMCP is because BMD is cannibalizing their own products. Sure BMD is saying there are differences products, but come on. I'm sure there will be a lot of people cancelling their BMCC and preordering the BMCP instead. This is what apple use to do. Heck, BMD could have just kept the BMCP in the closet until next year to keep on milking the BMCC, but they didn't.

In any case, interesting times. I wonder if one of these days, BMD will be bigger than canon or panasonic. They are doing a good job of disrupting the field and I'm assuming making a lot of money.

Great point/comparison with Apple. You stand still, you die. Perhaps more so in cameras then any other tech right now. The nimble electronic company - just as in the car industry - wins. This very board is as responsible for that as any particular tech update at this point. If the collective "us" as camera geeks votes with their pocket books - and with their voices - it's nearly impossible for the camera companies to ignore it. A forum like Dvxuser also makes that info impossible to hide.

Personally, I think it's amazing that any small company - be it RED, the new Bolex, Black Magic, etc - tries to make a go of it in a land of giants. Even cooler is that -with forums like this - it's actually possible for them to succeed. Am I pre-ordering the new stuff? Heck no - I have kids to feed right blooming now. But do I hope to buy the Sony/Canon/Panny version of these 2 new cameras next year?

You betcha.

Hehe. I'd be perfectly happy with an Alexa image out of a D800 body with a global shutter that records 2k 60p ProRes HQ and compressed RAW to XQD cards for $5000. Until then I'll keep shooting on at least 2 cameras.

If you can't be with the camera you love, love the camera you are with ;)

Has anyone bothered to ask about an OLPF and potential moire and aliasing questions on either of these two cameras?

Honestly, sometimes I get so annoyed seeing the same fluff interviews over and over from 15 different sources.
Doesn't anyone ask a few hard questions?

Ha, Ha, Ha!!!... I think that you are going to be shooting on those two cameras for a good while.

AH OK. Well for sure you can shoot crap on any camera.
Never said it was crap. It just didn't look anything different than anything else. Generic I guess. The video was done effectively to its purpose. But did it need 2.5k raw and probably is some elaborate cage with things bolted all over it? Or maybe think, "how did the BMC maybe get in the way of this shoot"?

Nothing against the video itself. But if not labeled with "BMC" I could have taken 10 guesses as to what it was shot on.

"YOU WANT ANSWERS!"

Aliasing shouldn't be an issue pulling 4k off a 4k sensor, no lineskipping or binning. I imagine the pocket will alias just like its big brother.

A year or 2 I'd say. The 1DC and C100 aren't that far off. The technology is all there, somebody just has to put it all together.
Keep in mind the Sony concept cameras shown at NAB. Then keep in mind of just how many Sony cameras were launched in the last 12 to 18 months?

Yeah imagine a shrunken F35 for under $10,000. There's a lot to like about the BMPRO but I can't risk teething problems on a feature shoot. I've never had a Canon, a Sony, or a Nikon go down on me. I expect 100% reliability on my set and the smaller manufacturers still have some work to do in that dept.
