Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

Everyone knows BMCC had production issues. However, anyone that wants to can get one right now:

There doesn't seem to be a shortage of listings on ebay including listings from Adorama which has been around a long time so I'm not sure the production issues are relevant any more. I see a lot of posts about , well if I could ever get one... well there they are, all you have to do is order.

These new cams are not even released yet and I'm sure BMCC has learned from the last release and will give a reasonable release date.

Very eager to see more of the S16 pocket cam. For a mid-to-low-end m43-user (like myself), it looks very attractive next to the GH3... but then, where will the GH3 be priced once this camera is actually released? Not to mention details about how it handles audio, power, and rolling shutter (they'd have said it was global if it was indeed global). Add in all the question marks about available frame rates, etc. In comparison to other DS16 cameras, DBolex seems to have superior internal audio at first glance (at least it has XLR inputs).

There are some VERY inexpensive S16 power zoom lenses out there, in B4 and C mounts... even a few in PL at reasonable prices. Only reservation is how well they'll resolve at 1080p.

OK, I've read the full thread now. No info at all about the sensor, DR, or what "compressed DNG RAW" means.

Sensor and DR:
If this is the CMV12000, many will be underwhelmed by the DR, as it's only good in the HDRx mode, which doesn't imply a more complicated workflow but does create motion artifacts in the expanded highlights.
Basically, in HDR mode, that sensor needs to be lit for as if it was film: it holds the highlights nicely, but you can't bring up the shadows. Nothing wrong with that, but not what many people would expect. And a huge nightmare if you don't have a waveform to judge exposure (since you have to be extremely careful not to bring your main subject into the expanded-DR range).

On the plus side, if it is that sensor, and if it doesn't have an OLPF, it's bloody sharp. Sharper than a 5K still from my NEX-5N: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...use-it&p=1986258428&viewfull=1#post1986258428

Compressed DNG RAW:
The cinemaDNG RAW spec includes an option for lossless Huffman-coding compression. It's very light (between 1.5:1 and 2:1), and support is an issue.
They also intended to include lossy compression, using JPEG2000 IIRC, but that initiative is dead AFAIK, so I would expect this to be the lossless Huffman-coding thing.
If so, the datarate will be as follows:
* uncompressed 4096x2160 - 24p - 12bit: 2400 Mbps = 300 MB/s, just 13 minutes on a 240 GB SSD
* add 2:1 compression, and you have 1200 Mbps = 150 MB/s, and 26 minutes on a 240 GB SSD
* if you only get 1.5:1, you're talking about 1600 Mbps = 200 MB/s, just under 20 minutes on a 240 GB SSD

Correct me if I am wrong, even though the MFT mount is very adaptable to... MFT lenses wouldn't cover the S3mm sensor, correct?

EF works for S35, great if you have those lenses. Say that m4/3 lenses don't cover S35, or most or some. Could you have a M4/3 mount with a Nikon adapter and work that on an S35 camera or is that just out? That is, is there something physical about the m4/3 mount that precludes using an S35 sensor?

MFT is great for the smaller sensor so you can get wide lenses taking into consideration the crop factor. With Super 35mm there's no need for MFT and there's plenty of good glass to use with an EF mount.

I find it interesting how when it comes to cameras there can be no such thing as competition anymore. For years we have all had duplicate choices from Sony, Panasonic, Canon, JVC and others. Years ago there was very little difference between cameras from these companies as well. Just because there will be multiple camera choices doesn't mean one will die over the other. Some including myself consider the GH2 to be vastly superior to the Canon 7D but yet that camera still has a fanatical following and much larger user base. It costs more and almost every review and test has shown the GH2 to be better or at least equal but yet people still want the 7D. The Blackmagic cameras will be no different. Considering how we all nitpick over the dumbest things on cameras I'm sure regardless of the price point somebody will still prefer the look of more expensive cameras.

Looks just great, now is it the CMV12000 sensor ?

I also think as some others do that we need an other mount besides EF mount. E-Mount would have been perfect but an EF-M mount would be awesome to pair with a Speed Booster !

I don't think the specs are so far apart on the 7D and Gh2 that one could be "vastly superior" to the other. Just comes down to what look people prefer and lots of people like the 7d look, others prefer the Gh2.

Wow! Fabulous news! I knew they would have a S35 sooner than later! Now we are talking. And the S16 is exquisite for that great price. Now if they only got rid of the digital clock camera design! Fabulous news! LOL!

I'm taking these one sentence camera spec announcements with a grain of salt. I think I've learned that there is a lot more that goes into a camera than a short, incomplete list of specs. Clearly there are sacrifices a manufacturer has to make to endeavor into what is now a "spec war" of sorts to camera announcements.

The pocket cinema cam is not a cinema cam just because they used the word cinema. I'm interested to see what frame rates the pocket cam records, what the data rate is, what range iso, shutter angle, battery life, audio recording [if any] info first, not to mention the rolling shutter effects. I'm sure smarter people could name a lot more items they need to know than me.

It sounds good - but it's incomplete. I wonder why m4/3 mount w s16? Won't that limit how wide you can go?

So is Markertek, although wasn't on website, when phone order placed for 2 of the 4 K's and one pocket cameras. (order #2 & 3 for 4K's and #1 for pocket cam-whatever that is going to mean)

Thank you very much

Fury

Markertek lies about the place you are in. I was supposedly in first place to get the BMCC EF, then I realized from this forum and others 3 people received theirs before me. I then switched to MFT, and they said I'm number 2. We'll see about that.
