Black Magic PocketHD and 4K production camera

For the record, as an owner and avid supporter, I do think that the aliasing/moire needs a fix. It may not bother some, so perhaps NEED is not the right word, but I really would like to see one soon. It doesn' tmatter to me if it's hardware or software, as long as I can remove or drastically reduce the appearance of it without taking a hit to image quality (moving to a stills program to do this is NOT ideal) then cool.

It won't stop me from purchasing and employing, but I would like to see it addressed asap.

Kholi, how would you compare the aliasing/moire of your BMCC to the GH3 (fwiw, people say GH3 is worse from that point of view than the GH2)? If you don't have experience with the GH3, then compared to GH2?

Yes, I do have both - and both will run all day on one charge. That's not the case with the BMC. I can also continue a phone conversation using my car as a power source, but how can I continue a shoot from inside a car?

Watching Philip Bloom's review, his camera died within a few hours of use out in the field. That, to me, is unacceptable. I think having an internal battery is a terrible design flaw. I don't know of any professional cameras that have this feature, and for good reason. I guess there's external power options, but the question is, why? Why is this even necessary?

I wouldn't be surprised that by NAB '14, BM has created a new design that fixes the battery issue.

I know I'm not going to buy a BMCC or the BM4K, unless there's a really good, reliable, easily portable and inexpensive option for power. I did, however, pre-order the BMPC - with its removable battery.

Ummmmm in your car talking on the Iphone you have it plugged in right?
I shot 3 days of 8 hour days with the BMC with 2 swixtronix pb70s plugged into the BMC without recharging the batteries at all. ANd all the while the PB70s kept the BMC internal battery fully charged.
Let me ask you this. How long will a Redvolt handgrip battery run an Epic? People use large capacity Vmount batteries on that camera.

That removable battery on the BMPC will power the camera for 30 minutes. I suggest getting some pants with lots of pockets.

At the end of the day the product speaks for itself. It does what it does and the price is the price. Whether the developers of the product are Saints or huge a holes doesn't change what the product does and how much it costs one bit. That being said I'd rather listen to this guy talk about what BMC can do and why they're doing it this way, then hear Jim Jannard at Red tell all the other camera manufacturers to suck it because they make toys and he makes professional cameras.

I've had all three of these cameras. The BMC handles moire better than the GH3. THe Gh2 still moires, it's just that its luma moire and not chroma. It's "when" the BMC moires that is the problem and it's quite nasty. Hence "when". It's hit or miss. Out of all three cameras the BMC is by far the best image. That is if you solely by cameras based on image. All three cameras are capable of great looking images...

Yeah, the battery on the Pocket Cam is a Nikon battery...it's an hour charge, but the battery is only 18 bucks, so I plan on buying 6 extras..lol

Jims attitude and certain comments is what will keep me from ever buying a RED. Your cameras are nice and thanks for making them. But man, drop the ego and just compete making cameras.

Thanks, dustylense. I don't like the sound of that "it's 'when' the BMC moires that is the problem and it's quite nasty." Yikes. Nothing's easy, is it.

If I have to. Normally, no, as the phone runs all day on one charge.

That's fine, as I said, as long as there's a good option to run batteries with the BMC. How do you attach them? Have a pic of your rig? Wouldn't it be nice if you could just replace the battery within the camera itself, like I do on my FS100? The less I have to rig on a camera, the better.

No idea. I have never shot with a RED. I used A/B mount batteries on my HPX500, though. But when one died, I simply removed it and put on a fresh one. i didn't have to stop the shoot to plug in my camera.

Pockets I have. Extra batteries, no problem. As long as I can remove spent ones, put in fresh ones, and continue shooting.

If you don't have an issue with an internal battery, that's fine. But it's a big issue to me. Like I said, there's a reason professional cameras don't have this feature.

It's not cheap but the Zacuto Stinger is perfect for a shoulder mount with a cheeseplate for the external battery. That's one reason BMC kept the design for the 4k camera, all the accessories are already in place:

You can mount the Switronix PB70 to the bottom of the BMC, then mount the whole thing on the tripod:

You're good to go for 4 or 5 hours. If at any time you need to do something more nimble without the battery attached you just pop off the battery and the BMC is fully charged and ready to go for an hour. I think dustylense has the real deal set up, two off these batteries charged up and you're good to go all day, plus they keep the BMC internal bat charged for when you need to do something without the external battery.

Then the BMC is not for you. It's really really really not an issue. I also had an adapter that used Canon 5D batteries. Worked a treat for what I expected.
You say there is a reason professional cameras don't have this? Dude, at least it has an internal battery. RED, where is it's built in battery? Arri Alexa? So you see those guys running around with a pocket full of nikon batteries? Look at the next news team you see with an HPX370 or something. What do you see? I see an big ass $800 Anton battery attached to it. Darn professional cameras that need battery solutions!

That looks like a good solution. What does it cost? Again, I'd prefer a camera with a removable battery, like ALL professional cameras have.

I actually mounted it to the top 1/4 20. Just to piss vanvideo off.

Will you list us what you consider these "professional" cameras are that have removable batteries? Because i bet if you do I can google image search all of them attached to an AB battery. WIll your removable battery power the external monitor, wireless FF, recorder, and wireless monitor solution?

Agreed, I doubt I'll buy a big model, but I did like the Pocket Cam.

But seriously, there's a reason why ALL, and I mean ALL professional cameras have removable batteries. So you can change them when they die and continue shooting! It's been this way for decades, because it WORKS!!

Which is why I carried 3 PB70's. Gave me about 18 hour of shoot time with the camera on the whole time. about 5.5 hours each and they charge in 4 hours. Never ran shy of power and they can power more than just a camera. Which makes them MORE professional. I even powered lights with them.

Do you consider the F3 professional? How about the FS700? The C300? The C100?
And what's wrong with AB batteries? They're not cheap, but they work. It's an investment in the camera, just as much as buying SSD for the BMC. The point is, the cameras are designed to continue shooting when the battery dies, because you simply replace the battery. You don't need to stop the shoot and plug in the camera, which you would need to do with a BMC AS IS.

If the camera has a D tap, the yes, I can power an external monitor. The wireless, etc. are separate from the camera. If I'm out in the field shooting B-roll, I don't need these things to run the camera. Besides, let the audio guy worry about his audio set-up.

So you would rather have absolutely no battery at all, and still have to purchase batteries?

This design is specifically tailored to those that are familiar with every other cinema camera available. RED, ALEXA, ETC... this is no different than using one of those systems. I imagine that if you aren't using one of those in your daily work then yes, this would be seen as "baffling" to you, it's really nothing new to those users, though.

The internal battery is very much welcomed, the closest you get to an operation like this is purchasing a dual battery plate OR a bebob battery plate for any of those other cameras.

Honesty, then the BMC is not for you and I suggest buying the C100. I did and I love it. And yes, the removable native battery is neat, but it doesn't power my external monitor.
