Best SDHC card?

Thinking of buying one of these two:

Sandisk 16GB SDHC Extreme III class 6 30 mb/s

or

Panasonic SDHC 16GB class10 22 mb/s

Which one is better? The Sandisk is 30 mb/s but the Panasonic is class 10 and a new product.

It's a Panasonic camera I'll be using, the HMC151, does that mean it's better compatible with the Panasonic SDHC cards?

Any comments? What about a poll on SDHC cards?

:dankk2:

This follows nicely from the recent thread about myself and a few other people losing clips from their Transcend cards. I've ordered a couple of Sandisk Extremes myself after considering the Panasonic Class 10 ones too. Have had no reports on the Pannies. The Scandisc don't seem to have a Class rating do they but I was influenced by a couple of very positive comments on that thread. Also at 30mb/s they will be operating well within their comfort zone so hopefully will be reliable.

Ditto on recently ordering some Sandisk Extreme III 30 MB/s cards. I also have a couple Transcend 8GB ones as well.

Thanks bazza, I've just read your "horror" thread; surely don't want that to happen!

What's more important, you think, class 6 vs 10, or 30 mb/s vs 22 mb/s?

A short while back someone posted a benchmark showing the Patriot SDHC brand with much faster read/writes than the competition. It's really hard to find them in stock anywhere.

I just bought a 16GB one on TigerDirect last night because NewEgg was out of stock. Today the tide is reversed - TigerDirect is out of stock and NewEgg has them back!

It's a bargain, too - $28.99 and free shipping (after a $5 mail-in rebate - only good for one, however).

Just wanted to pass along the good news :).

I don't reuse my cards because they become the archive or the client takes them. I have shot close to 100 Kingston 8 gb class 6 cards with no problems.

Is that why they're always out of stock??? J/K, where do you usually get them from? :dankk2:

I don't know if this is a regular thing, but I would NOT recommend any purchase from Newegg. I ordered a card 10 days ago and it's still not here. They ship with DHL, who have no idea what they are doing! Best I can tell, the package was shipped to Boston (I'm in NY), then dropped off at the USPS (another winner in my book!)...then...well, now it's lost.

I'm now told it will take 5-7 business days to get my credit card refunded.
Newegg blows! I'll never purchase from them again.

(thanks for letting me vent....cheers!)

Newegg has given me great service on the past, i wouldn't think twice about ordering from them...
but in your case you could also find a Microcenter in your are and they will match newegg on the price =) i do that sometimes!

I think people are getting their bytes and bits mixed up. The HMC only required class 4 at 4MBps (which is 32mbps). The Sandisk and Panasonic cards mentioned are 30 and 22 MBps respectively, which is serious overkill!

I was thinking the same thing! but people like the safety of a name-brand card... i seen some Sandisk Extreme II a lot cheaper than the III and they're fast enough!

I guess is personal preference, but I'm pretty sure i seen a couple of local guys shooting with the Sony EX1/EX3 using the SDHC to SxS adaptor and they use even class two cards... even at over-crank mode!!! and the Sony XDCAM codec is higher data rate than the Panasonic PH mode!!!

I've got some Kingston class 6 ones, and I occasionally drop frames. Not sure why.

I suppose I will go for the best Panasonic ones next time as they would be your baseline.

You drop frames? Are you sure - have you viewed the same footage back in your camera? Dropped frames in NLE are another slightly more common problem - but I don't think I've ever heard a report of dropped frames right off the camera.

From my searching, it sounds like the Sandisk Ultra II 16gb Class 4 is the best card. Sandisk has the best reputation IMO, 32gb is way more than double the cost of a 16gb, and Class 4 is all that is needed for the highest quality video since it's just transferred to the hard drive anyway. I suppose transferring it to the hard drive would be slower as a Class 4, but the cost savings probably offsets it.

From what I've learned, though, a class 6 is not necessary. Sandisk appear to be for more reliable, so I am selling my 11 Transcend 16gb class 6 cards for 11 Sandisk Ultra II class 4. The Panasonic cards are too expensive, and I don't believe their video division is reputable. The cards may be great, but I never want to have to deal with Panasonic again.

If they are 'made in China' Ill buy a few from you. (sounds weird saying that haha)

I know what you mean, i grew up avoiding all the Chinese junk... and i think i'll sit on the fence on this one!... I'll just buy a different brand just to try and be safe!
