Super clear compression settings for Youtube/Flash

Anyone wanna translate this for the PC...out of Vegas 7?

Sure - get Sorenson Squeeze :) In my experience Vegas doesn't have particularly great output for this stuff. I regularly fight with good h.264 output and usually I'm not the winner

Thanks man. I started with sorenson squeeze 4.2 then recently upgraded to 4.5

Question for you when I use soreson thus for youtube the audio is never synced up? I haven't tried your settings yet but will soon. Any ideas it seems youtube likes mp3 but sorenson doesnt encode mp3 audio I believe.

I've been experimenting quite abit, and i have come to the conclusion that it also depends on the file type you put into Sorenson Squeeze that also effects how it looks, eg, wmv look much better than uncompressed avis.
benadaim, what file type do you export from your editor?
I used the exact same settings as you described but i still can't get them as clear. (i have version 4.5)

This is the best i've been able to get.

and that's still very pixelated

Well when i export to an AVI with my editor (Avid Liquid) i just throw it into sorenson with my settings and it comes out clean. However if i export from AE then put it into sorenson i'm sure the results weren't as good. Which is annoying since i live in AE these days. All 3 of my youtube vids were completed fully in avid liquid then squeezed. Hope this helps.

I really can't understand why it's not working, maybe it has something to do with field orders or interlacing or something.

I've tried exporting my source video as lots of different formats then squeezing it and it doesnt make any difference to the quality. There must be one crutial thing that yours has that mine doesnt.

You're not using any of the advanced settings in squeeze right? If not then it must be something to do with the way the original files are encoded.

That is pretty ugly hmmm I just found my own settings in sorenson that came out decent.

Three videos of "action sequence" CC, B&W, Raw footage used sorenson. The 4th bright Eyes video is old and didn't use sorenson.

Damn, great quality dude. I found an article on the optimal YouTube settings for Compressor, but unfortunately it's spitting out a 200 meg file for a 4-minute video

The Raw one has very good quality, what settings did you export as in avid (or after effects), and what compression settings did you use in Sorenson?

I've tried almost all my editting programs (Vegas, Final Cut Pro, After Effects, Imovie, Windows Movie Maker) with all sorts of different file formats each with different codecs, and i still get crappy results from Sorenson. I'm even willing to get avid if it will give me better videos!

Infact Avid is downloading now, so can you give me your export settings plllleeeeasse?

Sorry for the wait I will try and post them tomorrow!

Here are a few of my Clips, I use QT with MPEG-4 and rescale to 320X240

^ Click on Bodyboarding/Surfing - I didn't try anything to keep it Youtube clean. Just exported uploaded and was kind of surpised how well i came out.

Also hit pause and let it load for a minute or two and then hit play, seems to be much better.

I have had no luck with my uploads... I was told that the compression THEY use screws with the sync. I'm beggining to think that is the case.

This issue is beginning to piss me off majorly. At first I thought I had decent settings for this workflow operation, then I began seeing others having much better fidelity. I have been editing in FCP 5.1.4, exporting as Uncompressed 8bit 4:2:2, and taking that quicktime file and throwing it into both Compressor for FCP and alternatively, Sorenson Squeeze 4.5. There is absolutely no setting/compression standard that looks better than the other. I have done .flv compressions, MPEG4 compressions, .swf compressions, H.264, WMV, EVERYTHING.... nothing looks great. My text looks pixellated and junky and the motion effect around my stuff looks noisy and terrible. I can't figure this out to save my life. In the example of NC17z's footage, I have no answer. I am using the HVX200, he's using the DVX100 and his video looks phenomenal.

I have noticed that people with GREAT looking footage from the HVX and/or DVX have the Redrock Micro M2 adapter. Maybe something in that 35mm converter/lens effect is giving the source footage a cleaner look. But even when I say it, I begin to think how ridiculously erroneous that must be.

I don't know. Can you explain your workflow VERY SPECIFICALLY NC17z???

Thanks,

Justin

I'm not really doing anything special. My workflow is allot like everyone else is. I export from Premiere to an uncompressed .avi and then I import it in Sorrenson 4.3 export as an .flv 1mb setting.
I realized that uploading to youtube in any other file format other than an Flash file would require some sort of formating or compression process on youtube's part. By uploading as an .flv file, you skip that step.
I think the generation loss/look is coming from the re compression that youtube is doing.

Edit- I remebered that rez the size to 425 X 350. That also saves a step...

Far be it for me to open a can of worms here, but in all my tests, I truly believe that FCP does something to these native HVX200 .mxf files. I used to edit in Avid XpressProHD, and the quality -- after a sorenson squeeze compression -- was visually flawless. Although it may be mathematically negligible, I am beginning to believe that the Quicktime wrapper process is creating a minor hit in quality... one of the constants that I have found is that people who are getting this good quality Youtube video thing is that they are either using Premiere or Avid. As a result, I'm thinking that working with the native .mxf files could be the difference.

That and subtle things like cinematography-stupidity, over-cranking noise settings or other factors re: user error could account for it. It's the only explanation I can think of, because I'm creating and uploading .flv files to Youtube and it's still looking junky... INTERESTING! BUT PERPLEXING!

i've been using discreet cleaner for years... the encodings come out great from it but when i take to youtube ..they get butcherd. Anyone have experience with using discreet cleaner instead of sorrenson?
