Best DSLR to shoot video with Nikon AI-S Prime lenses

I'd like to know what DSLR you guys would recommend shoot videos with Nikon AI-S Prime lenses. If you guys recommend a DSLR outside of Nikon, buying an adapter to use my Nikon lenses is no problem.

25fps is a must. Price range is £500 - £1,000.

So far Panasonic GH2 and Canon 550D seem to be the best choices.

Your opinion guys?
 
I don't know if I have the answer to your question. But I do want you to know that the GH2 (at the moment) does not do 25p (only 24p). If you go the GH-x route right now then the GH-1 would be your best bet.

BUT...if you hold out for just a short while Vitaliy is currently hacking the GH-2 which he stated will be ready sometime this month. When that happens....and if 25p is activated...then I would say GH-2. IMO
 
Really? So once Vitaliy hacks the GH-2, you reckon it would be a great 25fps DSLR to use with my AI-S primes?

What about the 550D, what's your thoughts on that camera Ian?
 
I use AI and AI-S lenses with my 550D. They work great.

The GH-Whatever isn't going utilize them any better or any worse. This is like trying to decide what SUV to buy based on how many wheels it has...

Can we please eliminate the word "Best?" from the title of threads for awhile?

There isn't any "best", there are only informed choices.
Everything depends on what you want to do, and what is the "best" camera to meet your needs.
 
sorry for little offtop but what do Ya think about d7000 ? I have huge problem, because I ' love nikon's, they are better fitting my hand, have advantage in low-light, i feel this is smarter camera than canon or panasonic :p But in this price range (body for MANY years) durability is important thing, so i think i will go for nikon d7000 or 7d more than to gh2 or 550d

Completely understandable. I had Nikons and a Canon before the transition and loved them. Shooters transitioning from stills to video should be comfortable with their new hybrid cameras.

But, they should also be fully aware of what their favorite brands can and cannot do as video cameras.

As long as you do not plan to shoot shingled roofs, patterned clothing or events that last over 12 minutes (Canon) or 20 minutes (Nikon), these are solidly-built cameras that will produce great stills and usable video (within limits) for many years.

Yoclay, that's understandable - best is a relative term and I meant in terms of making short 30/60 sec commercials for film competitions and also general use of filming holidays etc.

Arroway - I think I may have decided on the 550D. Any cons with the AI-S lenses in conjunction with the 550D? And also which adapter did you purchase?
 
I use Nikon AIS lenses on my Canon 550D and 60D cameras without any problems. I bought cheap mechanical adapters and they seem fine. Since you are in the UK like me you might consider the supplier I used:

This company also sells other useful stuff such as filters. When I bought my adapters last year a single Nikon F to Canon EOS adapter cost £25.90 each, which allowed me to buy an adapter for all of my Nikon lenses, though shop around and see if you can get a better price elsewhere.

We[/URL]l[/URL]l i had a 550D and can tell you the GH2 is another class up for video,as there is no 25P so i was concerned at first but after trying all the frame rates i use 1080i and it is great on this camera ,24P i found hard to edit and i dont like the 24P look in pal land ,720P is good but not as sharp as 1080i,1080i is very clean and sharp,i think the colors from the GH2 are simply great.
 
I had a 7D and recently switched to a GH2. I shot a short with it the same evening as I got it and I have to tell you, that thing is amazing! The picture is crystal clear, sharp and everything. I greatly prefer it to my old Canon!
 
I'm now torn between Panasonic GH-2 and Canon 600D, is it really worth the extra £200 or so for the GH-2?

Would the AI-S lenses fix straight onto the GH-2 or would I need an adapter for that too.
 
you will need a lens adaptor for both cameras
the gh2 would be better for video, not so good for stills, but does not shoot 25p (though it seems there may well be a hack coming)


I am thinking of selling my 550d with LCD viewfinder for £400, mainly used for video (only 1500 clicks) also have Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 VC, Canon 50mm 1.8, Canon 55-250mm if you go the Canon way
 
That's a great comparison. GH2 colours seem colour to my personal taste, but 600D isn't too far off.

I did have the Canon T2i - when the GH2 came out I got it and went out to compare the 2 cameras.
The GH2 blew away the Canon in the video mode. The Canon was still better in the stills dept.
I was not shooting that many still jobs so I sold all the Canon stuff. I still have some Nikons I
use for stills as well. Funny, in June I shot more still jobs and the GH2 did just fine.
