Barry video guide

Re: Barry video guide

i just went this last weekend to the actioncut.com filmmakers weekend course, i really had fairly low expectations but i had a free weekend and my wife was on call so i knew she would be at the hospital much of the weekend so i went.

it was amazing.

i too was thinking that a weekend dvx seminar by barry would be a great thing.

a discount of course for those who have already bought the anamorphic guide and now the dvx book would be nice! :)

you could do them in like 3 or 4 cities, like on in boston, one in florida, one in LA etc.

Re: Barry video guide

Barry,

You should place this in the "Marketplace" for maximum sales opportunity :D

Barry,

There's no way you can leave the Nation's Capital out of your seminar circuit.

And what about a dedicated DVX web site with short, ongoing tutorials -- above and beyond your DVX book/dvd?

You could specify a charge per download ... or have us pay a monthly/annual subscription for these nuggets of gold. The same goes for your other upcoming masterpieces on lighting, audio and anything else you see fit.

Your loyal devotees will make it worth your while.

The seminar I've always wanted to do was a complete filmmaking blitz: two or three days of teaching everything I know, followed by us going out and actually shooting a micro-budget DVX movie over the course of 12 days. A good one. Not using the seminar participants as "free labor", because they could just watch -- after all, it's designed as a full-immersion learning seminar. Of course, if they're qualified they could choose to work it too. But everyone would be a co-owner in the film or have a deferred pay contract or something like that, so if any money ever came through from distribution (not likely, but hey, we can dream) then people could actually make their money back, or more! No matter what, they'd have credit on a produced, on-the-shelf indie feature.

Never found anyone who wanted to do it though. I've even got a standing deal with a distribution company who would distribute it. Participant fees would be something like $2500, so I can understand it's pricey, but... sure seems like a good idea...

Re: Barry video guide

I would ask the folks to send me as a Christmas present. ;D

Re: Barry video guide

Barry,

I'd pull $2500.00 out of my A*% for an opportunity like that. I wouldn't mind being free labor on your shoot either!

Re: Barry video guide

Well, I certainly hope you wash it off first...

:)

I don't necessarily want anyone working for "free", that's part of why the participation cost is so high, I want everyone working on it to get paid something (even if it's minimum wage, if there's a budget, they should get paid something).

All depends on how many people sign up. The more who sign up, the more we can put towards actors, etc.

Re: Barry video guide

Don't forget Denver! We are practically in the middle of the country. People drive here from Nebraska and Wyoming to go to the friggin malls. I'm quite sure you'd pack 'em in from states all around.

Plus, you can stay at my house! I'm a good cook, and my fridge is full of Guinness.

Re: Barry video guide

Hey Jim, I'm going to be in Gunnison this weekend. If it weren't 4 hours away from Denver I'd say let's have a Guiness!

Re: Barry video guide

Well, I'll have one for you. It's pretty up there this time of year. Just be prepared for any kind of weather, including snow.

Re: Barry video guide

Barry,

How many people would you need registered to hold that $2500 full-immersion seminar? When and where would you propose having it ... and what would the seminar structure and calendar look like?

It would help to have some notice (for those of with work and family obligations) and plan accordingly.

Well, as for registrants, it all depends on how over-the-top we want to go. If we get 20 people to show, I can bring Dov Simens out to do his abbreviated 4-hour version of his Hollywood 2-Day Film School. We had Dov kick off the Independent Cinema Expo last year, and he was dynamite.

If we get people who just want to show for the seminar but don't (or can't) stay for the whole two-week production, tickets would be a lot cheaper for that...

I'd hold it in Vegas again, because it's easy to get here, hotel rooms are plentiful, flights are cheap, and if you're bored on the set there's plenty other attractions...

As far as when, well, it's all in the talking stages right now, so it wouldn't be in the next couple of months, I'm sure of that.

It just seems so wacky to me that people will shell out $4,000 to go to the New York Film Academy for four or six weeks, and make a couple of short films... why not spend half that, come here for half that time, and get genuine experience making a real indie feature that'll get distributed to home video?

If there's serious interest I'll start putting together a roadmap for the whole thing.

Re: Barry video guide

Barry,

Sign me up for the seminar. I need 4 months lead time to have my schedule cleared. (I just booked my Feb events.)

Re: Barry video guide

Barry's book and video!

hey barry, thanks for the book and video, i can't believe it came out so soon, i thought i wouldn't see it for another week or two!

the printing is amazing and the dvd, don't even get me started on the dvd, using sports illustrated models for the test shots was a stroke of genius.

but i have to say that giving a way a free anamorphi lens with each one, man that was cool! way over the top!

april fools, couldn't resist. just knowing barry from his posts i'm sure he's still putting a few finishing touches on the book!
