Message to Barry Green. I'm really looking forward to getting your DVX guide. Is it possible to pre-order a copy?

Re: Barry video guide

The DVD is done, and the book is written, I just have my collaborators putting it through a final review process. So it could be available any day now.

Now that it's close enough, I'm going to work on a website for pre-orders. So, stay tuned for announcements right here on dvxuser.com! ;D

Re: Barry video guide

Hey guys, just a general call for some guidelines on pricing.  I have a price in mind that I think is fair, but maybe it's too low.  What do you guys suggest?

Here's the competition:

Birns & Sawyer charges $50 for their DVD, which is very basic and doesn't have 1/5 the stuff on it that mine does.  And it doesn't include a book.

Goodman's Guide to the SDX900 costs $125, and it's only a book, no DVD (well, there's a DVD-ROM that apparently has video still pictures from the menu setups)

DV Enlightenment is a tutorial DVD for teaching lighting, it's $99, with no book.

Gary Kleiner's Vegas DVD tutorial system is $65.

Each volume of Douglas Spotted Eagle's Vegas training DVD's costs $60 to $130 each, and there are 8 volumes.  His "Intro to DVD Architect" DVD goes for $60.

So, I'm just asking so as to price it fairly and competitively, not too low so it justifies the work that went into it, and not so high that people hesitate to buy, or don't get value for their purchase.

The DVD is about 50 minutes long and has nine segments, includes tutorial segments on minimizing strobing and getting shallow DOF, a complete examination of all scene file settings including blowups and guided walk-throughs to show exactly what the effects are, comparison segments demonstrating the look possible with the mini35, how the DVX compares against 16mm film, and how the DVX compares against a consumer HD camera (even up-rezzing in post to match the HD resolution), and a special segment I call "Magical Projectile" which is a recipe book for re-creating the Magic Bullet Movie Looks in-camera, using only the DVX scene file settings (I am particularly proud of this segment!)

The book has lots of chapters, including (but not limited to) extensive tutorials and essays on all the popular subjects, including DOF and shutter speed tutorials, strobing and 24P vs. 24PA, a copy of the Anamorphic Adapter Guide (a $10 value by itself!), a thorough examination of the 100A and all that's new/changed in it, and then extensive examination and explanation of just about every menu item, physical switch, function and setting on the camera, including details of how and when to use each type of setting for what type of effect you're after, and some basics so that new users and new videographers can take advantage of the information.  The book is about 100 pages long.

So, if you'd be so kind as to vote in the poll and let me know what you think, I'll make the official launch here soon, probably in a couple of days! :)

Re: Barry video guide

Barry,

Tough question.

I bought the Birns and Sawyer DVD for $50 and in the end felt very very ripped off so I wouldn't go by that pricing.

I also bought the DVD Enlightenment DVD for $75 (that is what they sell it for at shows). While the information was good, it was only an hour long so once again I felt like I had been gouged on the price.

As for your DVD and Book, I will definitely buy it because I want to learn some information as well as support you (as you have always been helpful to me in these forums).

I would hope that the price would be reasonable (under $100), but I respect whatever you decide.

Mostly I can't wait to get my copy.

Chris

Re: Barry video guide

Okay, I just removed the poll, because I realize that's silly. I'll just publish it at the price I intended to in the first place, and hope that people think it's fair... :)

Re: Barry video guide

well it sounds more thurough than i expected, so i supposed it justifies more than i orinigally hoped to pay, but i would still hope that it could be purchased for under $100.

Re: Barry video guide

Barry, sounds like your DVD covers mostly tips of operating the DVX. Does it go into areas such as lighting? I'm interested in the DV Enlightenment DVD because it shows many lighting tricks.

Re: Barry video guide

This package is specifically about the DVX, and operating it, using its settings, stuff like that.

Depending on how well it does, our next DVD will tackle the grand subject of lighting, in ways that nobody else has approached it... should be a very handy tutorial. But that's quite a ways away. Gotta get this first one launched first!

Re: Barry video guide

Based on the info you share here, I'm sure it will be worth whatever you charge. I like the idea if the DVD, as some of us are more visual learners. I pick up stuff much quicker when someone shows me. Plus it sounds like you get the added bonus of showing example footage of what you get with certain settings.

Re: Barry video guide

I started out with the idea of just doing a book, but there was no way to adequately explain what these settings were doing without showing it to you guys. Plus, I can't begin to describe how much I learned about the camera by doing this! So there's lots of good info, and I think it's explained adequately enough that anyone, of any experience level, could gain something from it and be more confident in using the camera to get the results they're after.

It's almost ready... I should have the pre-order website up in the next day or two! :)

Re: Barry video guide

Hey, Barry!

I am excited that you will have something in a few days. But, if you could just tell us the price that you had in mind, we could be working on the budget to have the money ready when you have the product. Please, we would like to know. We are not asking you to go up or down. Just let us know what to expect.

Thanks,

:-)

Martha Stewart's serving hard time in the hoosegow for that kind of thing...

But yeah! Sure! A million shares available in the mezzanine offering to private investors, get 'em now for $1 apiece before we launch the initial public offering...

;D

Re: Barry video guide

Barry, I gotta be honest. I don't want to be flamed by raising the price, but you worked DAMN hard on this thing, and it's going to help out SO MANY people on this board. I say you take the price you had in mind, and add $5, and just pocket it, because, my friend, you deserve it.

Re: Barry video guide

BRAVO, TC!!

Barry, you did MORE than just work DAMN hard on this masterpiece. You put your mind, body and soul into this creation.

Our anticipation and admiration aside, you have earned the right to charge any amount you see fit for your work. The truth is, there is no competition out there simply because there is nothing like it on the market. What's more, the sheer time and effort you have put into enlightening us on this forum is priceless!

I feel the price should be at least $100 ... plus a well-earned BARRY GREEN GOODWILL PREMIUM. We need more great works of art like this - including your upcoming dvds on lighting, audio and other related pieces.

I hope my respected and learned friends on this board fully appreciate the enormous original body of work you have brought to fruition. As TC has pointed out, your creation is going to help out SO MANY people in this great DVX community. THANK YOU for making it possible!

Re: Barry video guide

Well -- I'm flattered! Thanks for all the kind words!

I think the going rate is going to be set at $69.95, with an introductory special through the end of the year at $59.95. I'd love to get paid more (who wouldn't?) but I want to make sure it's affordable and available to everyone, and hopefully people will find it a bargain. Some people said the anamorphic adapter guide would have been a bargain at three or four times the price we set for it, so I do hope they'll feel the same way about this new product.

I'll be working on the pre-order website, so hopefully it'll be up today or tomorrow.

Thanks again! :)
