Avengers

Saw this again today, and yeah, the jello on that tracking shot of Cap'n was astoundingly obvious. To pinpoint the shot for anyone who wants to look for it, (SPOILERS!) in the final battle, Cap'n, Black Widow and Hawkeye are down on the bridge. Cap'n says "They're [the citizens] fish in a barrel down there." He asks BW and Hawk if they've got things up here on the bridge, they say yeah, and then he jumps off onto the bus. Blasts from the Chitauri guns explode behind him, he jumps off it, and then I think we switch to looking at Cap'n from his right. He runs, he steps up onto a train of smashed vehicles and the camera zooms in and tracks alongside him as he runs up onto the wreckage.

The camera isn't wobbling all that much, but you can't really see s--t because the rolling shutter is just torquing the hell out of it. I think it kind of looks cool, I guess, if it's an intentional stylistic effect, but it throws me off every time I see it because I can't focus on anything except the fact that the movie is now being projected through a fish tank in place of a lens.

On an unrelated note, the film should break $400m domestic by either the end of Thursday (14 days) or evening Friday (15 days).

I know I'm in the minority here but I thought the film was just Ok. I had zero emotional connection to any of them. The whole film was a big introduction and not much else. The action for me mind numbing and too long. It was a high production value after-school-special. But hey the kiddies liked it so who cares what I think...

Anyone else think Captain America's costume (sorry, "uniform," as they call them now) was pretty ComiCon? The SHIELD outfits too, I thought.

yea, despite them trying to nip that in the bud by him asking if it was too old fashioned, i think they needed to do SOMETHING to it, dirty it up, make it textured like spidey's suit, etc... heck, old thor always looked like he belonged on the registered sex offenders list, but they got his costume to look awesome for the movies

I don't think there's anyway to make that costume look cool without totally throwing it out. I do think turning his mask into a "helmet" made it look a little goofier than it already does. Perhaps it's a testament to Chris Evans performance that he's able to pull it off at all.

I dunno, this could have looked cool:

The costume in his own movie looked better, much more similar to this.

The gamble of making Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, and Captain America, with the intent of bringing them all together in The Avengers. Along with using them to introduce the characters who didn't rate their own movies.

He's got a bit of a point. It's not the most well-directed movie. A friend of mine called it "brilliant," but it's not. It's a rip-roaring fun time, which excels at everything it set out to do, but it's not a great example of cinema. Of course, it doesn't need to be.

Yeah, but, appalling?....I was never taken out of the film by any of the shots. He's a craftsman with a very specific preference for the type of camera work he likes to see, and that's all well and good. But I don't see it as an artistic failure. He wouldn't have shot it that way. That doesn't mean the way it's shot doesn't work. It certainly worked for the majority of moviegoers...If I'm being honest, Pfister has done great, amazing work, but sometimes he can be boring.

There's only one film in recent times that I would call the camera work 'appalling'... and that would be "Beasts of the Southern Wild"(2012). I don't walk out of films ever... and I didn't in this case... but I was so 'car sick' by the end of the first act... I pretty much closed my eyes for the rest of the film... the Wife had wanted to see this film for so long, it was 'politically' not an option to leave...

Anyway, the only other film I have had that sort of reaction to was "Grand Prix"(1966)...

But other than those two... camera work is almost never a reason why I would call a film 'appalling'... for Hollywood productions.

No, I don't like 'shaky cam', no I don't like 'focus hunt'... and a number of other current camera techniques, but 'appalling'... no.

In the case of 'Avengers'(2012), I thought the film was pretty good in the entertainment sense. However, I think Robert Downy Jr. is getting a bit too inclined to play the same sort of character (Asperger's like genius...). This happened to Jack Nicholson, and a number of other 'top celebs', and I think it is unfortunate...

that film would of been 50% worse without loki vs hulk fight, theres not much to remember from the movie but that scene was really the best thing in it.
