Avengers

Just felt it was a bit bland and generally didn't do it for me. Things like Cap America and Ironman's little headbutting were shallow. Maybe it was too early for me to see Loki as the main baddie again.

Will be seeing Joss Whedon's "The Avengers" tomorrow with my Sister. I'm a huge Whedon fan. He's my all time favorite writer/filmmaker/creator and the second I knew he was signed onto to write and direct I was thrilled and had total faith that it'd would be wonderful.

BTW, The Avengers just shattered the all time opening weekend record set by Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part II (around $169 million) with $200.3 million opening weekend in the US!!! It has raked in about $641 million worldwide in 12 days. As a Whedon fan who has been telling anyone who'd listen for year what an amazing writer/filmmaker he is it's great to see him have a record breaking massive hit for the masses also appreciate that is not only making big money but also getting stellar review after stellar review. :D I was already proud to be a fan even if he only catered to a good sized cult following, but this makes me more proud to be fan than I already was. Can't wait to see it tomorrow!

This movie, once again, makes me wonder what all the fuss regarding 4K is actually about. It looked absolutely amazing for a 'lowly' 2K movie. Did anyone spot the 5D scenes?

I thought it looked great. Saw it in 2D but digitally projected. It was shot on the Arri Alexa right?...Couldn't tell which were the 5D scenes. Maybe the shawarma scene? LOL...I did notice in a couple of the CGI aerial shots, they put dirt on the virtual lens, which was visible when Iron Man's jets blasted by. Nice touch.

Yeah it looked amazing, visually amazing I mean (also saw in 2D). Yup, it mostly used Alexa, plus 5DMk2, and 35mm for some slow mo shots.

I found most of it to be visually bland, but the humor in the script saved it for me. Especially some of the Tony Stark lines. They were great!

Saw it this morning- great movie!

Joss really knows how to work with a large cast, it didn't feel like anyone was left on the sidelines at all. Banner/Hulk and Stark/Iron Man really stole the show though imo.

Agreed about the lowly 2k comment, it looked amazing. The Alexa really outputs a wonderful image.

I saw it in IMAX and was pleasantly surprised when I found out it was ALEXA. It looks great! I realize if shot in 4K it would likely look even better (sharper) but I had zero complaints about the image, it was awesome.

hit 200 million in its opening weekend making it the number one highest grossing opener ever. Wow! Jaw dropping numbers.

Yeah, amazing indeed. I posted the same earlier yesterday. :D Not just the highest opener, but it obliterated an already amazingly high record set by Harry Potter & the Deathly Hallows Part II at over $169 million. It's made $641.8 wordwide in 12 days. It's heading towards the rare Billion dollar club.

I have a real bad feeling about this. Its hard to see a film were you know that every single title character is going to be alive until the end, since they are all driving their own franchises. Either they go camp, b movie action comedy, or it will become even worse then the Fantastic Four...

My my my how wrong you were..... Avengers was/is an awesome movie, simply amazing and one of the best Super Hero movies to date.

Is there anyway to find out if the majority of viewings are in 2D or 3D? Is that data published?

Does it matter if people actually chose to watch it in 3D, or if 3D was the only option available?

At the theater where I saw it, the 2D showings were sold out for the entire day ( bought my ticket at 1pm on Saturday for a 7pm show ), so I was forced to see it in 3D.

I'm not a fan of 3D unless it's a Pixar animated film.

I have to eat my hat on Ruffalo.
...He absolutely stole the show.

I'm glad to see a great Hulk film, which is what this was.

I had jumped off the Marvel train after the first Iron Man (which IMO was very good).
Iron Man 2? (meh, forgettable)
Thor? (meh, forgettable Natalie Portman eybrows responding to sumpin' or another)
Captain America? (meh, forgettable Cap'n jumping/swinging over various greenscreens)

I actually dug The Incredible Hulk (mainly due to [jackiegleason]NooorTON's[/jackiegleason] performance...
But again, Ruffalo took it to another level.

The Avengers' story was surprisingly well counterbalanced against the utter bigness.
Hopefully this particular alliance of Superpowers (I speak, of course, of Disney and Paramount) finally will rule the day moving forward.

I liked the premise but found the film very slow overall.
I had plenty of time for a pee break.
The ending was not much different than Transformers 3.
Yes a few of the funny scenes saved the film.

From Box Office Mojo:

3D screenings accounted for 52 percent of the opening weekend gross, which is an improvement from Captain America's 40 percent but below Thor's 60 percent. That 3D share breaks down to 40 percent traditional 3D, 8 percent IMAX, and 4 percent premium large format. The estimated $15.3 million the movie earned at 275 IMAX theaters set a new record for the format.

As someone with no expectations at all, I thought it was fantastic. I had never watched a trailer for it, and would never have seen it in the theater if it wasn't for my discount coupon for the Cinerama and my appreciation for Whedon. But I'm glad I didn't wait to rent it. It was easily the most entertaining movie I've seen in the last year or so.

From a technical standpoint, I was really surprised to find out it wasn't 4K (from what I'm reading here). The screen I saw it on was pretty huge, and there seemed to be all kinds of resolution. Even the 3D effect wasn't the complete trainwreck I was expecting. Fast motion looked pretty choppy and disorienting (basically all the scenes with Iron Man flying around), but at least they didn't exaggerate the depth effect too much.

So, yeah. 4.5 stars.
