AVCHD high bitrate tests- MUD FREE footage

I think it's great that the bitrate upper limit has been raised for moving shots, but this doesn't help static shots. I can achieve an upper bitrate of 44-50 mbps when walking through grass and foliage, but when it comes to just putting the camera on a tripod the bitrate drops back to previous rates of around 8-10 mbps and the ugly compression shows up again. I understand that banding may not be solved simply through bitrate, but I sure would love to have a static shot that maintains a high bitrate to get rid of the blockiness.
Can you please provide an example as well as settings used?

I have been shooting static shots with high bitrate settings in 24PsF mode and see no compression artifacts. Bitrates do drop down in everyday static scenes, but that's because there is less information to be encoded as compared to scenes with motion. Also, very detailed static scenes (shooting the Death Chart) will always have higher bitrates than "everyday motion" ones. The good thing about AVCHD codec is that it only uses up as much storage as necessary to encode the scene.

You can see the blockiness and gradient noise on the wall. ISO 100. The bitrate is 8 mbps.

Not sure if you would achieve what you are looking for, but below is the setting I have recently started using. It will not get you the highest bitrate, but it is stable, Native 24P, and it gets me around 20mbps for low detailed scenes and 24-25 for high detailed scenes. I tested this setting with a couple charts with no error. Let me know if or when you try.

[Settings]
Prevent version compare=Checked
Third-party battery=Checked

E2 Quality=130

E4 Quality=100

Video Bitrate L=18000000

Limiting Bitrate=34000000
Preset bitrate=234

Thanks for the help but I see no difference with these settings. I didn't expect your mpeg settings to affect AVCHD but I tried anyways out of desperation.

Well... I think my camera is hosed... I tried just basic setting, and auto-focus is not working on 1080! I've been using the Olympus 17mm pancake for all my test.

Any ideas?

Maybe I'm too late but I should say that GH1 was originally designed not to use the Autofocus function at 1080 FHD without the 14-140HD lens. Later Panasonic updated the firmwares of the other lenses to enable them to use Autofocus at 1080 FHD mode.

But you know Panasonic can not be responsible for the Oly lenses such as 17mm pancake.

Anyway all lenses other than Panasonic's can't do autofocusing at 1080 FHD mode.

Hello,

When I go into AFC mode on my GH1. My Lumix 20mm 1.7 says "switch to AFS".

Should it work in AFC before patch or is there a setting somewhere?

Thank you in advance,

Erik

Banding/posterization just seem to go hand-in-hand with this AVCHD codec in my experience. Gradients in skies always seems to show up as a series of bands for me. That said, I haven't gone to great lengths to make sure that I'm using the best decoding. Camera playback via HDMI certainly shows the banding (which is also blocky). But then camera playback may be necessarily crude due to limited processing power. If the posterization is there even when the footage is converted by a high-end editing program or codec, then I can only assume the posterization is in the file itself.

Oh - one thing that can mitigate the posterization of gradients is to shoot at a higher ISO. The extra bit of noise that is introduces has the effect of dithering and reduces how visible the banding is. Your test is at ISO 100 which would be the least noisy and hence create possibly some of the most distinct posterization or banding. Try ISOs between 400 and 1000 and see if the result is more pleasing.

Hi, i'm doing a lot of test. FHD/SH 38/40/42 gives an amazing quality, but with extremly detayled picture (grass and foliage with wind and bright sunshine light) the camera crack in 1080p PAL, and some times there is a sort of "pulsing mud" in some little part of the picture. For 720 no problem. I use a an extreme III 30mb/s 8g card.
And....i don't know how to use the bit rate preset in ptool 3.40d.
Thank you

I know, the settings is still a mystery- we'll get there. I was bummed that 24PN isn't really working out well. I'm at 60 - 62 - 70 60i/24 wrapper. Your image is very sharp and detailed though. Pappas

Dear PappasArts and other Pro's and Enthousiasts, i've now achieve stable 24pn, at 54 / 62 / 96 GOP=2 and Preset Bitrate of 540 (default was 234).

Also I set the "Sensor Mode 4" under Patches for Testers to nr 7, sothat my viewfinder would show 23,97 fps. All working reliably and beautifully, bummer that couldt go higher as all sorts of errors came up; see the sull extensive table and it daily visual updates at: http://www.aster.nu/gh1.php

Are you shooting low movement, static high detailed shots? Something doesn't seem right here... I hope I can be proven wrong though!

Great testing site by the way

Very interesting results your getting. Did you shoot a codec testing chart?

Btw, very good testing site you created...

Pappas

Gaaf! I'd be very interested in these settings, can you stress test them a bit more with some long takes of the testing charts?
Also, have you had any luck increasing the bitrate on really static scenes, which normally are around 10-14?

Hmm, these settings generally crashed my camera INSTANTLY with the kit lens, a couple of takes could last a few seconds if not high in detail. I'm assuming you're using Ptool 3-2 (I can't find a limiting bitrate in 3-3). Can you show us your exact settings using the save command and post them here for us?

thank you thank you. these settings worked beautifully. shot all day not one crash. achieved 50 mbits on my patriot class 10. footage was stunning. stable native 24p every one!

Would you consider testing for PAL as well ? Considering your location, you will have problems shooting 24P indoors in fluoro lights.

Also, please post the PTool version. For some reason the ptool version modifies the optimum settings too.

Yes PLEASE post which version of ptool you're using and, if it used a version that allows it, save your settings to a file then post them, maybe we're doing something wrong that's getting overlooked. I have a Panasonic Class 10 card so I don't think the card is the problem. I had to guess which version you were using but tried 3 versions and couldn't make any of them work. The few times I tried 25p it behaved just like 24p.
