Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

I really didn't think Avatar could top Titanic at the b.o. but I may have to eat my words.

A top B.O. analyst said it is tracking to tie Titanics record on Feb 20th so we will see. I'm also sceptical, I guess we will know in 5 weeks. This prediction is without adjusting for inflation BTW.

Even if Avatar does not ultimately beat or even tie with Titanic's titanic box office haul, the fact that it made this much this quick is truly impressive.

Also, Avatar will still have the IMAX screens from now until sometime in March when the 3D Tim Burton Alice in Wonderland adaptation opens. I think Avatar will at least tie with Titanic's 1.8 billion. Also, if Avatar is still selling tickets by March, even if the IMAX screens get taken away for Alice in Wonderland, whose to say people still won't be going to see it in 3D on normal sized screens? If it keeps bringing people into the theater, I'm sure Fox and the theater chains would love to keep it playing into the spring and maybe even early summer.

Saw it for the second time today, and it was just as good as the first time. :)

I seem to recall that somebody here, and I can't remember who or find it in these 91 pages, was saying that the hardware in the movie was too clean. That wasn't the way I remembered it, so I looked this time, and I will have to respectfully disagree. There's dirt on the windshields, dings in the paint... those helos (and even the big gunship that the Colonel is drinking coffee in :D ) have seen some use.

The mech suits really stood out to me as not being right. Rest of the machines were pretty good.

I do recall someone saying the choppers lacked a believable sound fx to tie them in as being 'realistic'.

My dad will not believe that the water was not real (when they were flying in for the first time.) I keep trying to tell him that NONE of that planet was real. He aint tryin' to hear it. Of course when my dad was a boy he only had radio. And went to school up hill both ways in the snow.

Very few people have heard a real ducted-propfan in flight; it's not a popular design solution in the real world. From the recordings I've heard the sound was about right...

Two days after seeing Avatar my Mom asked me where did you find people *shaped* like that, to play the Na-vi...?

Well, I just saw it for the 3rd time last night. Still awesome.

I'm kinda describing it as a good roller-coaster. Hard to put into words, but a hell of a rush every time you ride.

i agree seen it 4 times now and I just enjoy it even with not so stellar dialogue I see it as a fun ride and amazing.

Yeah, it had better get enough Cinematography and Score awards to stack up half way to Alpha Centari.

Leona Lewis is performing "I See you" on the Today show today, and they've been promoing it though the morning by using bits of the soundtrack and their transition music into breaks; and each time it comes on a tiny little bit of me goes back to Pandora just for a moment.

The song's nice but 'Becoming One of the People' is hands-down my favorite track from the score...

That track has been playing pretty much non stop in my car during for the past couple of weeks. :)
It's also my favorite part of the movie.

Just the base theme for Avatar (used in all the music, including the song) sounds great. Of course.

After last nights showing instead of walking straight home, I went for a little walk in the woods first.
2 feet of fresh snow, all alone in the Alaskan rain-forest in the middle of the night, with the only light coming from the glow of the town through the clouds & mist behind the hill. No flashlight, cellphone & scanner off. The only sound was that of snow falling off the branches. Still riding the rush from the movie; it felt pretty darn cool. :love4:

Of course, a bit of bioluminescence would have gone a long way...

I noticed there are some important songs missing in the soundtrack. For example, when they're going to the Hallelujah Mountains in he chopper. The music that plays is epic and militaristic, and is actually played prominently at several parts of the film.

It seems to be nowhere on the soundtrack, though :-(

That's typical. I've purchased soundtrack discs for one or two particular tracks that were nowhere to be found on the released CD. It *is* annoying.

I've been listening to tons (scores?) of scores and soundtracks lately. Avatar is going to be among the top few. I cant even pick a favorite on this one, though I love track 3 "Pure Spirits of the Forest".

"Becoming One of the People" makes me want to weave in and out of traffic. lol! Gotta be careful with that one. :)

John Williams' The Asteroid Field from The Empire Strikes Back is still the best music for shooting traffic on a motorcycle...

See, I miss that kind of scoring, action music that was actually MUSIC, not an assortment of pulsing drumbeats.

Anaylst are saying it should be close to $500M domestic by Monday and pass Titanic's domestic B.O record by the end of this month. It's only had a 20% drop after 5 weeks with 4% less theaters.
