Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

This is my most eagerly anticipated film of the year, James Cameron back to doing hard edged science fiction, with a James Horner score to boot! Here are some links with interviews and images--

Definitely looking forward to this. Aliens is the film that really got me interested in filmmaking, and the rest of Cameron's work are among my all time favorites. So far all I've heard and seen on Avatar, as little as has been leaked, tells me that it could be the type of science fiction adventure film I've been longing for the past decade. I'm talking strictly story here, as I'm sure the supposedly groundbreaking 3D effects will be great to see, but I'm one of the few out there that is more interested in the narrative that Cameron is going to be using all this technology to tell.

I fear that the mega-hype attached to Avatar is going to be too much for any film to handle though, and if it doesn't exceed Hollywood's box office expectations, then I fear that the end of the original concept big budget studio film will totally be dead. People need to relax and remember that it is just a movie.

I'm loving the two concept art pieces. I've always leaned more towards the battered and functional look for sci-fi hardware over the more clinical and clean look of things like Star Trek. Along with Ridley Scott's Alien and Blade Runner, Cameron is pretty much the master of utilizing realistic looking designs in genre cinema.

Hey, anyone notice all James Cameron's film titles start with an A or a T? (Pirhana 2 doesn't count)

Except Ghosts of the Abyss, which of course uses the Abyss in the title. What about Dark Angel and Strange Days? He didn't direct them but he was involved in the writing and was the producer. After Avatar he's supposed to do Battle Angel, based off of the manga series Battle Angel Alita. At least there we've got a B before another A.

Speaking of B's, A's, and T's... after Avatar and Battle Angel he could make The A-Team in 3D. Right there you've got two T's and an A. Wow, that sounds a little pornographic.

Ving Rhames as B.A. Baracus
Brad Pitt or Hugh Jackman as the Faceman
Paul Giamatti as "Howling Mad" Murdock (I was going to suggest Cameron regular Bill Paxton as another choice, but he might be too old now.)
When or if he decides to come back to film, Arnold for Hannibal (since Cameron has done three of Arnold's best films), of course Clooney could probably do a great Hannibal too, albeit very different from the kind of Hannibal that Arnold would portray.
Maybe get Micheal Biehn (another Cameron regular) to play the villain.

People are treating this thing like the second coming of christ. When I first heard about it, I didn't know ANYTHING about it, yet everyone was saying it's going to be the biggest thing ever. In fact this post is the first time I actually heard what it's about, and I've heard about it for a while.

Anyways, sounds interesting, it should be a fun film, especially in 3D. I'm thinking the hype is raising the bar too high. Hopefully it'll still be very enjoyable. Can't wait.

When are they making a trailer for this thing?

yeah he even has a battle angel shirt on in that first pic

Crap, I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it. I remember reading an interview with Cameron from at least a year and a half ago, and he stated that a lot of the prep for Battle Angel is done, and that he'll move into production on that one pretty quickly after Avatar is done. In terms of 3D visuals, Battle Angel could actually be a ton more insane than Avatar. If you've read the Battle Angel manga you know what I'm talking about.

I imagine if he said any more, five black-suited men in a dark SUV would show up, throw him in their car and have him flash frozen into suspended animation until the release of the film...Anyway, Jim gave a talk at the ubisoft conference at E3 yesterday and revealed some details. He actually seemed nervous talking to a large crowd. SPOILER WARNING, if you want to go into the movie cold then don't watch this--

Just like Ripley at the end of Alien and beginning of Aliens. Hopefully Jim wouldn't get so wrapped up in the next project and forget about cryo frozen Sad Max and leave him in there for 57 years.

Seems that the Avatar game will be playable in 3D, and from the sound of it should be better than most movie tie-in games due to the long development time.

Yeah, I think it actually makes more sense for games than movies, especially first person games.

I liked the old 3D better than the new stuff. bloody valentine looked like a Pop-up book to me. Still a fun movie. I'm just old school. Light Grey and Dark Grey glasses. (I'm showing my age here)

From what I have read the Avatar game will be FPS. Which I hate with the exception of Golden Eye on the N64 and Modern Warfare. Both fantastic.

I loved Bioshock and Gears of War 1 & 2. Not a Halo fan.

Avatar game is supposed to be a third person shooter. I saw an interview from the recently concluded E3 show where Cameron says that Ubisoft started the game as a FPS, then later decided to go with the third person route.

Ha! That's the passenger bay aboard the Valkyrie. One of my sets.

So is it a space craft or one of the military vehicles?
