Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Just saw Avatar today.

Wow...what a fun movie. I had a blast watching it. The only "3D" experience that I had previously was Shrek 4-D at Universal Studios. (I had a headache at the end of it)

Had a really bad day today so I stopped by the theater to relax and maybe have some fun. Couldn't see Avatar earlier because my girlfriend didn't want to see it.

The story and the script was very lacking in my opinion. A futuristic Pocahontas. I thought the characters were very two dimensional. The ending was blatantly obvious. That being said...

I had so much fun watching the movie. The effects were amazing. I took the glasses off and put them back on a couple of times to see if they really made a difference. I was trying to figure out how the hell this 3D thing works and what kind of witchcraftery was used in creating these awesomely dorky glasses. It took me back to the first time I learned about the magic of film making.

I let myself go today in the theater. Wasn't in the mood to critique anything. I just wanted to have fun and that's exactly what I got. Well worth the money I spent...though I don't think I'll watch it again. Maybe to have another go at figuring out the 3D thing without googling it.

Second time today, great show indeed. And that's what makes this film worthy, the potential of attraction that it has. That alone is worth an award, I don't know which one but it is worth an award. Every show is fully booked (some of them even a week before)....

By the way, that troyan font is well... no words....hahaha

The humans are coming back anyway, there's probably already another ship on its way even as the film ends...

There are 5 on the way. (There are 12 ISVs, that form a continuous cycle: 5 each way, and 1 at each end refueling) It's a almost 6 year trip (at near the speed of light) and the ships can't turn around. In fact they have to spend almost a year at Pandora refueling for the return trip.

Thanks to faster-than-light communications, they can deliver a message to prevent further ships from leaving earth. But there are more humans on the way, and they have to stay a while.

Is there some new technology here that I'm missing?

The fact that all this was done, in 3D, in *real time*.

So was the new Christmas Carol. Full movement and facial capture was done in real time. Performance capture is what they are calling it. Is it just the 3D aspect that's different? Even though they were both done in 3D? Anyway, whatever it is it's not obvious to the eye of the beholder when looking at the end result. Still looks like motion capture CGI.

I won't harp on it. As I said, it looks great! But the Na'vi still look like CGI when in a scene with an actual person. When they are on their own it allows us to get lost in their world and not have the real thing to compare to. It was smart of him to have them on their own for most of the film.

In the end when we see them lined up with the humans leaving the planet.... they just don't look real.
After all the hype I expected more of a WOW moment out of them. Something like, holy crap! Those things look real!
To me it's just damn fine CGI with kick ass facial capture.

What I have come to realize from this part of the thread is that what impresses people on the production end is not necessarily what impresses people on the viewing end.

Fair enough.

Don't get me wrong, the amount of work that went into this must have been staggering! My hats off to all involved and this was the best action film I've seen this year.

It was a great ride for sure.

I've just seen some staggering motion/facial capture like THIS is the past.
And humans are of course MUCH harder to do.
She switches to the real girl at around the 1:30 mark.

Now, the facial reactions that were captured in Avatar were quite amazing. I just see it as an improvement though.

I thought the Navi at least passable for my suspension of disbelief.

No more better or worse than Gollum from LotR's.

The cool thing ? It's only going to continue to get better.

It'll be #1 again this weekend for the 6th weekend in a row, est gross is suposed to be $35M for a domestic total of $550M. Amazing.

Not one of those alternatives even begins to hold a candle to Avatards.

How about Hometree Huggers?

Makes sense. Once these types of interstellar ships were built and the major kinks worked out, an operation like this would want to maximize the amount of unobtainium that could be mined and transported back to Earth. Also, it seems that Earth really needs the unobtainium pronto, and lots of it.

The mojo numbers are behind, especially worldwide, I think it beat Titanics Worldwide record yesterday, if not today it will (worldwide). Domestic it'll be at $550M after tomorrow night so not far off.

From the studio as actuals come in.

As far as what I do I'm all over the board. Anything to make a buck, mostly buying and selling / putting deals together. Aside from the media/movie/tv business that I have been transitioning into for the past couple years I own a car dealership, an aviation company and also buy / sell real eatate. I came here 3 years ago to get advice on how to set up my hvx's to shoot a couple pilots and thought the people here were pretty cool so I stayed. I have ties to a couple major studios, talent agency, major licensing co. and a tv network so it's not hard for me to find anything out. I also have a lot of friends that produce/direct, you have seen their movies in theaters and talked about them here.
