Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

That concept is so analogous to computer networking there is a theory that Pandora arose from an advanced computer based civilization which mixed biology with computer tech, that it merged the best of the two to create the ideal world.

Better hope to God the Vogons don't show up.

I'd pay real money to see a Douglas Adams-scripted Avatar sequel...

...or a James Cameron-directed Hitchikers' Guide.

No way on Cameron doing Hitchiker's. The books are way too nerdy and complex to ever make good movies, and if Avatar proves one thing, it's that "complex" is not on Cameron's agenda.

Looks like it will break Titanics $1.8B worldwide record tomorrow, numbers probably won't show on mojo until tuesday.

It's crazy and 30 days AHEAD of when analysts were predcting it to hit that mark, 3 weeks ago the date set for $1.8B was FEB 20th, not Jan 22. It'll easily hit $2B probably $2.4-$2.5B but I'm probably a fool for saying that now because it's drop off is a LOT less than expected and it doesn;t have an end in site as of today.

No...is it worth the Hulu-ing?

I enjoyed it, if you watched the BTS clip I posted way back in this thread Cameron brought it with him, it'll be that clip with Cameron describing what they were doing and why and talking about other things like his first movie he made in his family room that was really bad. Kind of funny, I never new in college his major was physics, then he got a job as a truck driver.

Yeah, the story is told that he saw Star Wars, felt inspired, and abandoned a promising truck-driving career to pursue film-making...

...I have to admit that I don't watch a lot of BTS stuff, particularly from projects with which I'm already familiar. Too much like work.

Avatar takes a lot of hits about it's story, which is why I was interested to see this in an interview with actor Wes Studi (Eytukan) recently:

Q: So when you saw Avatar completed, were you amazed, were you glad, or did you have a whole different emotional experience?

WS: I was overwhelmed by the technology; I really was overwhelmed by the amazing 3D of it all. The story, yes, absolutely--I think it's a very old story, but this time told in a technologically new way that makes it even more acceptable for audiences.
It's a great pleasure to be a part of something that is not only technologically advanced to the point of amazement, but also one that carries a message that it does and acceptance of one group by another.

"An old story, told in a new way." I like that. :)

Look, I certainly don't think Avatar is going to win "Best Screenplay" any time soon :D, but it's certainly the "Best Picture" I saw all of last year (and more than a few years before that, for that matter).

There's a reason old stories keep getting re-told. Why this is such a problem for some people re: Avatar is really a mystery, to me. Really, was someone broadcasting far and wide that Avatar was going to be 'the story that has never been brought to screen, ever before?' I don't think so.
