Avatar - James Cameron Returns! (Spoilers in thread, obviously!)

Of the 108 foreign markets Avatar is in it's #1 in 107 of them, the only market where it's #2 in is India, it got beat by some local film (for this last weekend).

I’m not going to see Avatar. Not that anyone cares; he’ll make lots of money and be lauded as the Worlds Most Fantastic Auteur and I’ll still be broke and making dorky little video snippets.

But I still win.

Because his CGI orgy of alien fairies falling in love in spite of the hateful technology-loving greedy western corporate evil men fails in epic proportions to the money thrown at every hour per render frame.

Why?

Because 3D is stupid. We will start seeing articles fawning over the wonder of the monumental achievements of the 3D technology employed…

“These aren’t the red – green glasses you remember as a kid…this is using a newer p o l a r i z i n g technology!”

Never mind that hardly anyone alive has ever seen a movie in a theater with the red – green glasses…the polarizing method was developed in the 60’s.

“But you won’t have to wear the cheap cardboard glasses…these are reusable plastic glasses like average everyday ones!”

Who cares. You still have to wear silly glasses. As long as people have to put on the glasses it can never catch on. But every few years we have to sit through another attempt to push 3D to the masses. But Hollywood doesn’t seem to understand that. They are pushing new “3D ready LCD screens” that guess what…you have to wear glasses with. I have heard that there is some kind of 3D without the glasses but I’ve never seen it and it seems it’s not being pushed very hard. It must be not that good because Hollywood seems to think that 3D is the equivalent of adding sound to silent pictures. It’s not.

Why is 3D stupid, why are the glasses silly and why do you care what you look like in a dark room with people you'll never see again?

The local film (Bollywood style I assume) was probably better written and felt more original:-Laugh(DBG):

...sorry I couldn't resist...

I don't care what I look like (my wife can attest to that)...people just don't like wearing the glasses. That is the simple truth Hollywood just can't seem to accept.

Yeah, at the cinerama dome, people loved the glasses. just waiting in line they were wearing them pushed back in their hair, talking about the them, playing with them... didn't see any evidence of people irritated by them.

during the show however, the glasses did keep slipping down my nose. a constant distraction.

you still have the opportunity to see the film in a normal screen.

Now into a more technological level, I don't think that 3d can be compared to sound in film, although sound was possible from the beginings of cinema but wasn't implemented until the first big crisis of the cinema to gain audience. following that same path we arrive to another big crisis of film, TV, what was the solution, color. 3d was invented bsck in the 60....buyt was it needed back then, wasn't it a wise move to let it be forgoten and use it nowadays when film is in a low valley? now that tv or even services as netflix can compete against it? I suppose that 3d now makes way more sense (from a bussines standpoint) than in the 60s.

But that's just my opinion, and I'm not comparing this new technology to other nor saying that it improves the story of a film (because it doesn't). It is a attraction as color was in the startings, who knows what will 3d offer in a few years, it may become a way of expressing things (every aspect of a film can be used to tell a story, why not 3d?)

Went again today. The 3:00 showing was sold out. Say what? 3:00 in the afternoon on a Monday in Orem, Utah, and it's sold out? Yep. Had to get tickets to the 6:00 show. Which was also sold out.

It's pretty damn phenomenal, I went on x-mas day and all the IMAX was sould out for the day. We got there at 2:30 for the 3:30 show and there was allready a long line outside the room. BTW Sherlock, which actually opened that day, also had a line... of 4 people LOL. The reception is freaking crazy, seems like you either love it or are the one guy in the lot that can't get past the story. 7 of us went, 4 girls and 3 guys, including one girl who had JUST flown in from overseas, she hadn't slept in over 24hrs because of delayed flights; my cousin had to pick her up at the airport or we would have gone to an earlier show. My wife was crying through most of the 3rd act; everybody LOVED it; then they asked me what I thought... every single person within earshot, including all the other patrons, gasped when I said "it sucked." I might as well had yelled at a sweet old lady "go f--- yourself!" Me and the wife argued for a couple of hours, I agreed to disagree and she just decided I was a soulless bastard... damn you Cameron! Well atleast he made T2, they can never take that away :)

I'm in the minority when I say the story was cheesy, wish it had more meat and potatoes to it. But I must say the visuals was stunning, almost stunning enough for me to forgive the story not being that great. But the writer in me can't forgive that big fact. If the story matched the visuals then I would have had a movie orgasm which might have been a bit dangerous.

Not to bring in another movie into the thread but a movie like T2 had both equally great combination of story and visuals.

But I tell you what though, judging from the people who are flocking to see this movie, Cameron has lived up to the expectations of this film.

As the old saying goes, there's no possible way you can satisfied 100% of the audience. With that being said I liked it but didn't love it.

What I didn't like about it the most was the predictability of the love story between Jake and the girl, I never really felt the love between the two, it was too easy for him. And not sure if the acting was due to not actually seeing the actors face but I thought the delivery between Jake and the girl in the Avatar world seemed a little weak.

The best part of the movie was the General, he was bad-ass, I do feel that he should have had more of a back story and a lot more screen time.

And the part that bothered me the most was this...

SPOILER ALERT:
It was too easy for Jake to gain control of that Big Dragon/Bird thing. I know the spiritual leader says he was the chosen one or whatever but damn! It's kind of like a High School Quarterback just one day is thrown into a Super bowl game and just wins the game with no type of problem. That part bothered me the most but I guess for the Story's sake, it had to go down that way.

That's the power of Tsahaylu. He just has to have the guts & heart to try it.
Once they See each other, they can work together.

It's still selling out here in lowly Juneau, Alaska too.

Barry; what did you think of your 2nd (3rd?) viewing? Still holding up?

dang. made another 19.4 million yesterday (Monday)... which is 3 million more than it made the previous Monday. Looks like it may be here for the long haul.

Yep, it's achieved must-see status for the moviegoing public, the kind that can only come from great word of mouth.
