Atomos Samurai

David,

I know there was some confusion with 30p on the Ninja, will the Samurai ship with the capability to record 30p? Has the Ninja fixed this issue? Thanks!

I agree there's confusion about 30p but it's more due to the way cameras output HDMI than with the Ninja itself. Cameras tend to output 30PsF as opposed to 30p, which is to say that the progressive image is transported via two fields per frame. Put these fields back together on a screen and you see progressive, because they are both derived from a progressive image. It's not that the Ninja won't record 30p, it's just that there is never any 30p available for it to record.

The Samurai will record all the usual SDI-supported frame-rates. It will support 720p60 but not 1080p60, which is not an oversight but just the reality that the data rate of 1080p60 is twice that of 1080i60, and you would need a different - and significantly more expensive - sort of device to process and store information arriving at this rate.

Thank you - but I want to mount it to my PLATE, not a rod. I have no rods to mound it to at the back. It is mounting to a plate I was asking about.

Note that this is the exact same situation as 25p. 25p is typically imaged and transported the same way as 30p is. There's not anything about this that Atomos is doing "wrong" -- they're doing it the way everyone does it. 25p = 25 progressive frames embedded in a 50i broadcast compatible stream; 30p = 30 progressive frames embedded in a 60i broadcast compatible stream.

Yep. 1080/60p is impossible on HD-SDI. HD-SDI simply does not support 1080/60p at all -- it was never designed for it. If you need 1080/60p, you either have to go with a dual-link HD-SDI system, or go with 3G-SDI. And that's a different product.

So no mounting plate, or other options, from Atomos?

Can you at least confirm for us what the mounting points on the unit are - so we can get working on our own solution?

Thanks,

So I'm wanting to use the Samurai I have on order with B&H in a week and a half....1st full week of Oct, B&H seems to think I'll be in the first shipment. Should I make other plans on what to record on or do you think we'll have it in hand by then? Just want to plan.

Thanks,
Tim

To be honest, it's hard to be precise. The units are being manufactured and tested now, but a) there are a lot of pre-existing orders (of which it sounds like you're one) and then b) there are the vagaries of international shipping. So much of this is outside our control that all we can do is give a rough idea, but, for what it's worth, I believe we're still on schedule.

Thanks Dave, sounds like I better have a backup plan in place, just in case. It's a 5 day shoot, I just hate to use the Hyperdeck Shuttle. That's going to eat some serious drive space.

My hired Ninja just arrived, set it up in 5 min, I really like it..I'm holding off on a purchase until I see some reviews of the Samurai, but part of me is saying I should just bought a Ninja instead of hiring.
Anyhow the Ninja is idiot proof very intuitive to use.

What file system will the Samurai use and/or will it break up files into 4GB chunks?

The Samurai's using a different file system: exFAT. It's a 64 bit file system that is compatible with PCs and Macs, and will let you record files that are not divided into chunks, and has a theoretical file size limit of several Zetabytes. I'm guessing that's big enough for the average wedding.

David, will the Ninja ever be updated to use the same 64bit system as the Samurai?

I'm fairly sure this question has been answered but I'm having difficulty searching for it...

The ninja via HDMI....is the start/stop recording controlled by the camera? Will the ninja detect the stream and start recording or do I have to hit record on the unit as well as the camera?

Same question as above but for the Samurai via SDI. Thanks!

The Ninja you'll have to hit record on the unit itself.
The Samurai you can set it up to detect the timecode flags or you can hit the record on the unit, your choice.

Q: Intel x25-M G2 120GB works flawless with the Samurai?

As far as I know, all current Intel SSDs work fine with the Ninja. The Samurai is only just becoming available but the data rates are the same and there is no material difference to the disk requirements.

So, I've read through a lot of this and my bottom line is that I'd like to have/purchase a recorder for a series of 5 spots I'm shooting on my AF100. The first shoot is a little less than a month away. I'd love a samurai but I'm betting that I won't be able to get my hands on one before the spots start shooting. So, I'm thinking of buying a Ninja for the gig and selling when a samurai becomes available. I will be shooting 24p. I'm unclear on the updates to the ninja, will I get a 24fps movie on the ninja or will it still just be embedded in a 60i mov.

Hopefully David will respond with better news, but as I understand it, it's just plain going to be a 60i file period, and you'll have to use an external application to strip out the pulldown.

You could perhaps rent or buy a Nano or Ki Pro Mini or other SDI recorder and then resell it later; that would get your 24p-native file, if that's what's important to you.
