Using the Ninja and it is awesome, esp with the latest firmware update. Amazing value for money. Sparky

Using Ninja

Using Ninja

I've used it for 3 jobs now...if you're shooting it locked down and don't need TC, it's a great tool. Workflow (through FCP) is very smooth. It actually saved my bacon when one of my SD cards went belly up right during an interview...camera just stop recording, but Ninja kept going so everything was there. It's probably not the best to use in a handheld situation, but it's doable if you are careful. Would have preferred the Samurai, but it's unavailability kind of made my choice for the Ninja.

Yes, all good news.

Just to fine-tune a few of the details:

At IBC in Amsterdam (which is where I'm writing this) we announced that DNxHD would be available as an option. When? Probably January. The first Samurai batch is currently in the factory and as soon as it has passed Quality Control it will be sent to distributors around the world. Because of the large number of advance orders, it's not clear at the moment when we will have general availability, but we anticipate in about a month, if not before.

Our Connect converters, which will add HDMI in (and out) to the Samurai and SDI in to the Ninja (and which will also work stand-alone) will be available around Christmas time.

Agghhh I need a unit 24 Sept.. I'll need to hire a Ninja

How does the focus assist and exposure assist on the Samurai work and will these features appear on the Ninja via a firmware upgrade..

Can I quickly ask a dumb question about these recorders? Do you press record on the camera, then press record on the Ninja/Samurai before each take? Or does it automatically start recording once you press record on the camera?

Thanks.

As far as i know, Ninja no... but Samurai yes. LANC control on Panasonic is different then other cameras so it may work using the LANC input. Since timecode does not travel through HDMI, that method is a bust too. Samurai, on the other hand should be able to handle this through SDI connection fine.

Those convertors are brilliant! I'm off to india for 2 months to shoot a feature beginning october 8th and it would have been great to take along the samurai as backup unit to record to. It's probably down to the wire to get one before I go, but I'm still hopeful.

Samurai is looking great. the lack of HDMI out was making it less attractive for me, but looks like you got that covered with the addon. Question: can you go in 24 pfs HDSDI and come out 60i HDMI? With the AF100 when you do 24 psf, you lose the HDMI out the camera... making it hard to do external recording and an EVF

tested the KI pro mini and it doesn't do convert HDSDI to HDMI at all, only the other way around.

On Samurai, you set the timecode to "SDI" in the timecode page, and then "arm" the unit for remote operation on the home screen. Then, when you stop and start your camera, the Samurai will follow, recording clips with the camera's timecode, and frame-accurately. So - if you're recording internally as well - you'll get clips with that start and stop at exactly the same time as the ones on your camera.

With the Ninja, you can do start/stop remotely with Lanc, as long as your camera supports it, which most Sony and Canon ones do; but the FS100 doesn't.

I think you need to make a distinction here between 24p and 24PsF. 24PsF is not the same as 24p. It is, essentially 48i, and this is not a standard that is supported by HDMI; so you will not be able to pass this through the converter, unfortunately. 24p with a 3:2 pulldown to give you 60i would work, though.
