Atomos Flame Series - HDR Hi Bright 1500 NIT Monitor/Recorders

I was excited for a moment and thought the Flame might do 2k -> 4k upscaling while recording, but that doesn't seem to be the case.

Regarding the F5, just some clarification: Even with the paid 4K upgrade on the F5 (or the F55 which has 4K internal by default) you would have to use all 4 SDI outputs to stream 4K 10-bit 422 uncompressed over SDI and the Flame I believe only has one 6G-SDI input. That means to record 4K from the F5 (or F55) you would need an SDI multiplexer to combine streams into 6G. They run $1000 or more.

You could use the 4K over HDMI but then you are limited to 8-bit 420 and I wouldn't really see the point of that.

For $999 you can install Sony's ProRes board in the F5 (or F55) that will give you many flavours of the ProRes codec, but unfortunately it's limited to HD/2K max resolution. Likely because Sony wants to push it's XAVC codec.

Still the Flame looks like an awesome monitor but sort of on the expensive side for just monitoring purposes.

cheers,

They seem to be shipping now.

I'm hoping some early adopters take the time to do some comparison reviews with the old Shogun or Assassin. I'm tempted by the brighter screen alone, but it'd be nice if the recorded footage was noticeably improved as well.

Here's an early review - mostly of it's monitoring qualities.

Very interesting, I just need to feel it in my hands. My old SmallHD 702 was sturdy and so is my PiX E5 the biggest drawback to the old shogun was the plasticky build

Is it confirmed that the Ninja Flame can record DCI 4K over the HDMI output of the GH4 and not just UHD 4K? If so, I'd rather get this for only $100 more than the Pix-E5h because of the larger monitor.

Really wish they had exactly this in a 5" screen size. Or *mostly* this with a few concessions made for size...

It's great, just very large for use on handheld small camera setups.

Got mine the other day. It certainly records 4K DCI from the FS700 SDI output. If I get a chance over the weekend I'll hook it up to my GH4 and see what happens.

In terms of build quality - it's light but feels well made - albeit from plastic. I wouldn't want to throw it around, but I expect that in normal use it will stand up just fine.

One issue that I've found is that if you play back a high contrast scene while the monitor is in HDR mode (which it also was during recording) the image flickers - a phenomenon you can see very well if you turn zebras on; they flash on and off. The recordings are just fine, however. I'm in contact with Atomos support at the moment to find out if it's just that I have a faulty unit or if it's a wider issue.

Overall very pleased with it and can't wait to do something a bit more interesting than filming seagulls!

Great! Thanks for checking. I'll be interested to see if it can do 4K DCI from the HDMI out of the GH4.

Nice Tim! Look forward to reading more of your thoughts, especially after hooking it up to the GH4. Also, I'm interested in the audio recording quality when using phantom power. Not sure if you are planning to try that?

Thanks in advance!

I have the exact same flicker issue on my Ninja Flame. Definitely not just your device.

I've noticed the same flicker on my Shogun Flame as well.

Further information on the Shogun Flame... I did a series of tests in both RAW and HD 1080p 60 and quickly noticed that 2K RAW capture is not a viable option on the FS700 due to severe moiré / aliasing. I believe this is an FS700 issue that any external recording device would encounter. This may already be common knowledge, but I hadn't stumbled across this info before. The good news: Both 4K and 1080p show no signs of moiré or aliasing from external capture on the Shogun Flame and work very well.
