Aputure Light Storm LS 1s Review

Does any one have a line on availability of the LS1 A/B mount version? I've been checking the usual suspects and some are showing a back order status as far out as January 2016 (B&H) . They are either selling like hot cakes or Aputure grossly underestimated demand... or both. :-O

I ordered mine from B&H around the end of September when the due date was showing January 2016. (A/B mount version.) I was prepared to wait but pleasantly surprised when they notified me it had shipped about two weeks later. Maybe they're trickling in a few at a time and B&H doesn't want to commit to them being generally available, but they ship them when possible -- don't really know, but it might be worth placing the order and getting in the queue. You can cancel if you find another one in the meantime.

Hmmm which do you guys recommend, the S or the C? For general use?

I have some LED ribbons (the ones on RU groupbuy which has excellent color) but I think that the one with the 25 degrees is better since the ribbons seem to have a wide spread.

Looks like it works well! I might try something similar. It fills the diffusion well. Is it the spot version of bi-colour? Thanks for sharing!

FFM,

The pic isn't 100% accurate. It's somewhat hot in the center, but is nicer than and larger than the tracing paper they include with the light. For $40 I think it's pretty good. Some mini bungies would make it sweeter.

I have the 3 Ss. I probably should get the 1/2 W

Herb,

I can't make out how you are attaching the softbox to the light. Could you show some more photos? This looks like a cheap solution. Thanks!

P.S. How about temperature? I am assuming the softbox is for strobes. Are we thinking the Ls1 is cool enough to use a strobe softbox?

I've attached the removable / adjustable zip ties to the barn door frame. One on top the other on the bottom. So far the frame doesn't show bending or flex.

I would feel better having two on top and the bottom. Something easier to attach / remove as well. these look cool, but the hooks are probably way to big: http://amzn.to/1OZ9q4r

All the min bunnies I've looked at are 8"-10". The length I need is 3".

Thanks for the photos Herb. It looks sturdy but I am concerned with interrupting the heat sink's job.

Yatti, the Amazon listed softbox looks tidy but at 23" is a bit small for really soft light. Not a bad price though. Wish it was 36".

Maybe try velcro strips that you use for keeping cords wrapped up. Light and pretty strong.

The ILED Softbox came in today. Not bad. Wish it was deeper but I think it's better than adding scrim to the barn doors.

Added some tough spun to the barn doors similar to a Chimera soft box inner baffle and the light is nice and soft with plenty of output for a key light.

Thanks Eric. What is your opinion: This softbox or shooting through a stand mounted reflector when it comes to softness of light? I would prefer a softbox for ease of directing and repositioning of the light, but quality is important. Thanks.
