Apple iPhone4 and iOS4.0 - Thread

Get twenty of these small cams (iphones), set them up all over the scene, find a good editor, and watch the magic. Sounds interesting to me.

Do you hate editors? Because that would probably make a good editor "magically" go ape ****.

Editors perform magic the same way witches do, with good ingredients. Bring a witch some Turtle Car Wax, instead of wax from a turtle, and your love potion #9 that you contracted the witch to mix up for you will probably only be guaranteed to work all then time 0.01% of the time.

I'd rather edit a scene from 1 DVX in the hands of a good shooter, than a scene shot with 20 iPhones placed around a room.

Still, if you want to get your short "film" noticed, weld a Letus onto the new iPhone & you're sure to get at least 50,000 hits on Vimeo just for following the latest fad.

Zacuto doesn't have a shoulder mount follow focus adapter for it yet? :D

Accessory companies are so happy with the video capabilities of small devices that are not camcorders, that's where all the BS marketing is coming from. They sell by thousands and those who get something like this for video are ideal customers, you can sell anything to them. The cheap price leaves lots of room for accessories. They will be comparing with HVX 720p any time soon, they will even find a way to make the iphone look better, overcast daylight, comparison in online clips with tons of compression etc.

Gizmodo is supposed to announce the new Zacuto iPhone 4 accessories they "found in a bar" tomorrow, so we'll see photos shortly. I know I can't wait!
That's hilarious!

Cheers man! I don't condone violence but this will be twice in a week the poor bastards get their door kicked in.

The Zacuto guys should challenge Gizmodo to a UFC fight shot with the DSLR's and iPhone 4.

I'll just repost here the tweet of Stu Machwitz:

"If you shoot a feature film with an iPhone, please send me a ticket - to whatever's happening on the opposite side of the planet."

While I really admire Stu and his work, this statement is ridiculous. I thought movie making was about the story...

You mean to tell me if I shoot a feature documentary of WWII survivors with an iPhone that it won't be compelling *because* it was shot on an iPhone?

I thought movie making was about the story...

Story arc? Plot? Dialog? Performance? Suspension of disbelief? What on earth are all these silly things? I'm sure they can all be fixed in post with a filter or two.

Audiences really care only about codecs, lack of skew / flash banding, DOF, etc. etc. etc.

I'm sure some "well known industry person" said the same thing before The Blair Witch Project was shot on a Hi-8 camera. I'm sure there were naysayers around saying you can't use DSLR's for anything other than web video before Gale Tattersall used it on one of the most popular network television shows on the air. Just goes to show popular opinion isn't always popular in the end.

Story matters and using the right tools to tell the story at hand is what counts and not how much latitude or mega-pixels exist in the capture device etc.

Can you imagine Blair Witch being shot on a Red?!!

I thought I would move this over to the Cafe, and see if anyone has pre-ordered yet? Trying to do it right now, but seems Apple servers are overloaded.

If you have an iPhone already, go download the 'Apple Store' application and do the pre-order with it. It works perfectly. I could NOT do it through the website no matter how hard I tried. (and by that I mean going through the process 30 times).

Cool thanks will do!

For some reason the app is only letting me do store pick up, not shipped, which I need (nearest store is 1:30 hours away)

Did anyone who ordered from ATT get a confirmation email right away? I haven't yet, which has me worried... I have confirmation printed out though.

You can get the EVO 4G for Sprint, which also records 720p video (30fps I believe).

earmarkcreative is absolutely right. Put in other words, content is king. Audiences don't care about DOF or whatnot either as long as your story is emotionally engaging.

For my part, in preparing to go on tour with a doc I'm just finishing up, I'm overjoyed with the fact that I won't have to lug around my camera setup and microphones and whatnot to continue to do short pieces on the road. For me, the convenience of the iPhone 4 or EVO 4g or Nokia N8 is invaluable, and though it will be a slight sacrifice for audio quality, that's my only concern. For doc filmmakers in particular such as myself, this is an outstanding breakthrough and opportunity.
