Chrome VS Safari on Windows: Chrome wins
Chrome VS Safari on Mac: Safari wins

The noticeable speed difference of Chrome VS Safari in the Mac world is negligible and the Safari features and interface win out. The gap widens a bit in the Windows world and it will largely be a matter of taste, but the speed benefits of Chrome show up more in Windows.

FWIW I use Safari on Snow Leopard and Chrome on Windows 7.

Not sure about how well Chrome is optimized on a Mac, but from technical Benchmarks, Chrome spanks Safari (at least on the PC):

Also you can run own benchmark using the SunSpider benchmark tool:

Okay, its official. I played with an ipad and I still don't get it. It is an over-sized iPhone. Cool? Yes. But revolutionary and magical? hardly.

That's interesting.

We had two nephews over this week, ages 24 and 28.

Both have iPhones.

Both couldn't put it down and both basically said it isn't an oversized anything.

The older one is going to buy the 32 GB version; the younger can't afford it.

I guess it's how you view it.

I think the bottom line is the ipad is seen as a luxury device. You don't need it to get through your day. People need phones, many need and buy a desktop or laptop that has more functionality to work. 500 bucks for something you don't really need to get through your day is too expensive.

I ran Safari, Chrome and Firefox on a Mac with MacOS 10.5.8 and found the difference between Safari and Chrome to be negligible (Chrome was a little faster) but both were significantly faster than Firefox. I prefer the Safari interface.

I remember feeling that way about the iPod. Then I got one and it changed my opinion. On the other hand, I'm not in a rush to get an iPad.

I still remember when my cousin got the first ipod that came out, it was like gold, now is a brick hahahaha....but it still works. I'm sure that people will get used to it, people will buy it and eventually the price will go down (when better models come out).

I think it´s quite amusing, that guys who always complained, how absolute annoying it is, to have that "heavy, big, fat" cellphone (every other smartphone than an iPhone), have absolute no problem to find it totally convenient and handy to carry around a - fife times bigger and heavier - iPad with them all day. And on top of that they still have to carry the cell phone.

But the iPod was and is cheaper, and they do fill a need for people who commute or exercise on a regular basis, or just enjoy music. If the ipad was 150 bucks I think it would be a different story.

When I bought my first iPod is was around $450. Since then the prices have continually dropped. I originally bought it to replace the CD player in my car since it was cheaper AND I could put a lot more music on it (30 GB at the time) and not have to worry about carrying around CDs.

i get the ipod, you can have really good quality audio, all day long, all the songs you want, and you can also have some cool apps, and it makes sense when you don't have to buy a smart phone if you don't need one.
your small slim phone can work as a regular phone with a great battery life and great communication audio quality. and you have another small device with you that you don't have to carry with you all the time, or can leave it in the car, the ipod actually does what it is supposed to do.

maybe ipad 2.0 will bring more to the table.

maybe i really don't need a mobile device that has a browser as good as my mac or pc(but i would prefer not to go backwards in technology), maybe i really don't watch that much 1080p(not even that much 720p) because of my bandwidth, but i feel like i want a device that would be 1280x720 native instead of 1024x768, it just seems more logical. even if i find 840*480 or lower to be really good on 24" and 32" monitors and tvs.

maybe i don't want a device that would actually play 1080p to play 1080p, maybe i would prefer to use the extra power to be able to watch 720p, and be able to fast forward and rewind or scrub through something really fast without skipping frames.

maybe i don't want another shinny screen that doubles as a mirror when viewing a black screen.

maybe a netbook can play more video formats and codecs than an ipad, and i won't be restricted to the one format that works on the ipad.

do they have any video editing apps on the ipad or the ability to capture stills?

Well then, if the nephews couldn't put it down...:)
(My 5 year old niece does the same thing with my cat)

What I find funny is that some of the same guys who claim they're not interested in the iPad have a hell of a lot of posts in this thread. :)

It's almost as if it bothers them that other people find it useful.
Maybe I should hang out in the RED forum and ***** to people about how it's heavier than a good DSLR and only marginally better.

I own mostly macs: top of the line 27" iMac, plus a MBP, MBA and a couple of minis. I have a bunch of ipods. But I'm not a fanatic - I have no problem using Windows if the occasion calls. So platform doesn't factor into my purchases, I'm afraid I'm very utilitarian - I only look to what works for me, and it doesn't matter to me who makes it (I'll even buy Sony gear).

So, I played with the iPad several times now. I won't be buying it - for many reasons. First and foremost, I have no use for it - except as a book reader... it's great as that, but has fatal flaws even as that - it's too heavy, and it's too awkward to hold! If I go on a bus or the metro, and I'm standing, I can't hold it comfortably with one hand... which I can do with a Kindle (though the Kindle is out for other reasons - no color, pdf BS, screen refresh etc., etc., etc.). Other uses? I don't see them at this time. For extensive typing it's useless - I'd rather use the MBA - so word processing on the go is out. I guess unlike most, I don't find myself hankering to watch movies as I walk or sit in a cafe... if I'm in an airplane, the MBA is still better for that. I don't play games, so that's out too. It isn't really portable the way my ipods are - so listening to music is better on other devices than the iPad... and even looking at photos or videos (I prefer to do on a bigger screen than the iPad), but for total portability, I can do in a pinch on my Touch. All those useful little apps - my Touch does it, and it's in my pocket... so far I've seen no apps that I desperately need and are only available on the iPad.

Most shocking to me, however, was that I simply didn't like it aesthetically. It's a big slab of heavy rectangular metal and glass - to my eyes, it looks obsolete already. It's rare that I find design to be something to complain about in Apple products, but there it is. It strikes me as very awkward and unimaginative - that curved back side, so it's not comfortable to set it on any surface without rocking, the necessity to lug around extra objects to actually make it useful (bluetooth keyboard, some kind of cover so it sits well, something to actually carry it in and on, and on, and on), and I don't feel like being arsed to figure out how to connect devices to it and work around the lack of straightforward interfaces like USB or FW... yeah, I'm sure there are ways around it, but I can't be bothered - the fact that I have to scheme to just do simple sh|t like that, puts me right off.

I'm not speaking for anybody but myself. If it works for you - kudos. But for me, it's useless. And I'm not excited by it in the least: it looks ugly, dull, and old already. But that's just me. I won't be buying one anytime soon - and this coming from someone who has a ton of Apple products and is not a MSFT slave. That's what makes a market right? Any product will have some people who are the right customer for them, and some who are simply not. For now, iPad has not sold itself to me. Maybe in the future, if there are vital functions which it comes up with and which address my needs, I'll revise my opinion.

I too wonder, like Horrigan. After all, it's just another tool. As an engineer, I have a wide variety, but I have no iPhone, no Touch, no MBP, just a clunky PC laptop with terrible battery life.

For me, it gives me great portability for mail, calendar, contacts, web when I need it. And personally, I like it as a book and PDF reader.
