The Notion Ink looks impressive from the specs, but I wasn't terribly impressed from the videos. It looks like it will nail the features list, but I doubt the exectution, polish, and UI will be up to snuff with what Apple has produced. And they will be lucky to see 3,500 apps formatted for their device within a year, and Apple has that (and growing rapidly) after less than a week... not to mention 185,000 iphone/ipod touch apps that function on the iPad just fine (if a little pixelated). To me, the 3rd party apps is where the functionality is. A built in USB port or HDMI slot from something like the HP Slate or Notion Ink is nice... but not if those platforms become largely limited by software support. And if the something like the HP Slate is just another computer w/Windows 7, why get it? Now it's just doing exactly what my laptop does but slower and in a worse interface. Kind of like a netbook... but not as good.
Apple nailed it. It doesn't try and replace a netbook, or a laptop, and that's why it works. It cuts out things like task managers, drivers, file system naviagtion, etc. in order to do the things it WANTS to do BETTER... instead of slower and just in a different form factor (like a netbook/PC tablet). It has a full, specifically built-from-the-ground-up multi-touch interface with a massive amount of software support. None of us NEED a new device that changes the way we do web and everyday computing tasks. But a great deal of life-changing inventions have all been things none of us NEEDED... until we had them... and now it's impossible to imagine life without microwaves, dryers, the internet, etc. Once you experience it, you will see the value.
Free OS 4.0 just makes the deal that much sweeter.
Really impressed with Apple's clever multitasking solution. Harness the vast majority of multitasking benefits while cleverly avoiding the performance pitfalls or battery/performance. Way to harness the power of multitasking for mobile platforms, and make the interface easy to use and understand. Well done.
