Anyone get an iPAd yet?

The Notion Ink looks impressive from the specs, but I wasn't terribly impressed from the videos. It looks like it will nail the features list, but I doubt the exectution, polish, and UI will be up to snuff with what Apple has produced. And they will be lucky to see 3,500 apps formatted for their device within a year, and Apple has that (and growing rapidly) after less than a week... not to mention 185,000 iphone/ipod touch apps that function on the iPad just fine (if a little pixelated). To me, the 3rd party apps is where the functionality is. A built in USB port or HDMI slot from something like the HP Slate or Notion Ink is nice... but not if those platforms become largely limited by software support. And if the something like the HP Slate is just another computer w/Windows 7, why get it? Now it's just doing exactly what my laptop does but slower and in a worse interface. Kind of like a netbook... but not as good.

Apple nailed it. It doesn't try and replace a netbook, or a laptop, and that's why it works. It cuts out things like task managers, drivers, file system naviagtion, etc. in order to do the things it WANTS to do BETTER... instead of slower and just in a different form factor (like a netbook/PC tablet). It has a full, specifically built-from-the-ground-up multi-touch interface with a massive amount of software support. None of us NEED a new device that changes the way we do web and everyday computing tasks. But a great deal of life-changing inventions have all been things none of us NEEDED... until we had them... and now it's impossible to imagine life without microwaves, dryers, the internet, etc. Once you experience it, you will see the value.

Free OS 4.0 just makes the deal that much sweeter.

Really impressed with Apple's clever multitasking solution. Harness the vast majority of multitasking benefits while cleverly avoiding the performance pitfalls or battery/performance. Way to harness the power of multitasking for mobile platforms, and make the interface easy to use and understand. Well done.

I do think the addition of a multitasking on the iPad, which is scheduled for later this year, will make the iPad a lot more useable for some.

I played with one at the apple store the other day and I didn't really like it for the same reason I don't like reading books: I can never find a good way to ergonomically hold it for any period of time. Whenever I read, I seem to adjust either my posture or how I hold the book every minute or so, because I tense up and can't get comfortable. I can't imagine surfing the web or watching a movie looking down at the screen on my lap or holding it up to eye level, my neck and arms are stiff just thinking about it.

I'm probably just weird and have a bad back/neck, but after 5 minutes with it in the apple store I had to put it down.

That all being said, I'll still consider buying one down the road to use for the "wow" factor when meeting potential clients. This will help using the old sales technique of getting the customer to have your product in their hands so they start building a connection with it and start to feel ownership.

Me: "Let me show you a similar video to the one you are proposing that I have produced"
- hand over a brand new iPad with top of the line head phones with my latest video queued up

Client having experienced (not just watched) my work : "Wow, do I write this $1,000,000 check to Christopher Francis or New Focal Media?"

I can't find any real reason to buy it. I have a laptop for the web, I have a desktop to do editing and design so that's nothing I need this for. I can get an old 13 inch powerbook if I want a small laptop for surfing and I can get it cheaper than the iPad, get a wireless usb modem stick and surf as much as I want. I read books, not ebooks and there's nothing the iPad does for me that I can't do on my laptop. I don't think its for everyone and don't think it's intended to be and I think that's the genius behind it. There's a select group of people that want/need this and will buy it.

If I had to put my money on it, I would say iPad will move tablet computing out of the niche market and into the mainstream. In a few years time as people start seeing the benefits/use case scenarios I think the reach of the iPad will go far beyond a 'select group.'

Here's an overview of some of the first batch of apps for the iPad from Gizmodo:

Some are really cool. Especially Air HD that basically gives you file system access to the Ipad, allows you to mount it as a wireless HD on your network and load it up with files. And a lot of other cool stuff!

Definitely check it out if you have an iPad, are debating getting one, or are just curious about some of the things it can do. I learned a bunch... cool stuff!!

Hilarious!

But for the record that are over a dozen apps that allow printing from the iPad, and even give access to a file system structure of your documents, pics, movies, etc. Air Sharing HD is among the best and comes with a number of premium features, others are just basic print apps. If you are looking for one, just type "print" into the iTune's AppStore and check out all the results for iPad apps.

if you need to sneeze on your ipad, you have to get an app to do it.

it's an e-book kind of device, for reading books, doing small work related documents and presentation and a photo album kind of device, you would think printing should be native across all apps.

it's not like you would need an overhaul of the system to enable printing,

it's not as complicated as adding cut/copy/paste functionality, ha ha.
