Anyone get an iPAd yet?

Do all iPhone/iPod apps work with the iPad?

Because I could see the iPad being a better sized unit to run iSlate.

Whoa..... Now THAT is bad a$$!.... I don't get the ipad.... It's a gadget that a true techie won't like because it's underpowered and limiting. I guess the main buyers will be those that just want it 'cause it's a MAC?

Disagree.

The magic is in the third party apps. It is worth watching these videos:

http://www.apple.com/ipad/apps-for-ipad/

And noting that this is what is available on launch day. It's taken 1-2 years for iPhone apps to really grow into themselves... imagine Apps in a year from now?

One thing the iPad has that will seal its success is industry support. The fact that Apple can forego flash, and by launch day over a dozen MAJOR websites have switched from flash to HTML5, with a number more having officially announced or with substantial rumors to switch soon (hulu included) to HTML5... what other company could pull that off?

Countless major publications, websites, and business are behind the iPad from day one, and with early estimates saying over 500,000 sold (at least) on launch day it may already be too late for other tablet computers to gain any real momentum and market share. Popularity breeds more popularity.

The problem with every other tablet computer is they are netbooks with the keyboard broken off. They post a features list a mile long and implement said features in a lack luster way. I find it ironic that NO OTHER TABLET HAS EVER SUCCEEDED and the iPad has on DAY ONE sold more than every other tablet COMBINED... and people still say it won't succeed. The same people who say it won't succeed because it doesn't have a USB port or run a full OS like the other FAILED tablets. Good advice... replicate failed designs. There is a reason these other devices did not succeed or sell. Who wants a tablet that is a actually just a netbook with no keyboard and a crappy touch screen? No thanks.

I am very impressed so far with the iPad. I think anyone who accepts it for what it IS and plays with it for a while will not help but be impressed with what it does. No, it's not designed for people who want to flash kernels, run adobe on location, plug in external HDDs etc. But when it comes to having a device to take with me on trips, vacations, road trips, tote around town, have on the coffee table/kitchen table and with me all around town and home... I really get it. I don't use my laptop for a lot of things... the iPad will bring things like board games, cook books, magazines, weather, sports coverage, text books and education... fully into the digital realm. It greatly simplifies (and enhances) the experience of common, everyday computing tasks (web, email, photos). That's what 90% of people do 90% of the time.

Let's not forget that the iPod was widely criticized at it's inception, not to mention the iPhone and even the Apple Retail stores which EVERY respectable company described as a stupid and doomed mistake. Yeah, right. And the iPhone was suppossedly doomed to fail because it was such a limited device with its lack of MMS and Copy/Paste at launch.

Point being: this device, for all the flak and misunderstanding it's received, is actually very cool and undoubtedly revolutionary, not for it's features list, but for how well it does what it does and for the impact on the market and industry it has already made. It's is legitimately ushering in a new way of computing that other companies only wish they could. I think Apple will own the tablet market in much the same way it owns the MP3 market and is quickly overtaking the smartphone market.

The one thing I found ironic is you have an absolute genius and visionary like Steve Jobs and yet people jump to the conclusion that the iPad will surely fail because it doesn't have X feature. I think these people ought to open their eyes a little, take a little humble pill, and at the LEAST have a little bit more perspective and open mind. Take a wait and see approach, and just check out the things the industry (not the techno geeks, but the real world industry) and everyday people who have actually USED the iPad for any extended period have to say. Take a look at the apps coming out. And give the man behind Pixar and the last decade of Apple's success a tad more credit than to assume you know better.

Just my 2 cents...

I was underwhelmed at annoucement. I've seen, played, read up, and played on the iPad some more. I am slowly shifting towards overwhelmed... I really think this is going to change the way people use computers and technology everyday.

I agree mostly with the poster above. Many people don't understand that it's not about having more features than the competition, but about doing what it does better than anybody else, especially when it comes to the basic operation of the device. Just compare the touch screen of the ipad to the touchscreens of "the competition", I haven't seen any other device with a touchscreen that works even nearly as well as the touchscreen of the ipad. What is a tablet PC worth if it doesn't have a perfectly working touchscreen? Nothing! Why would you want to have a touchscreen if it is difficult to use it? Apple is the first company with a tablet that has a touchscreen and user interface that doesn't come with a compromise compared to the traditional mouse and keyboard. If the operation/navigation of the device is cumbersome, like with pretty much all the other non apple tablet pc's, why should I care about USB/Webcam/etc.? This is just one of the reasons why no other tablet PC ever succeeded.

The main appeal for me is that it does pretty much everything I need to do when I'm on the way, that it is lighter than my labtop, and that it has a better battery live.

it's not a pen tablet touch screen, it's a multi-touch screen.

if you can't use it as a tablet, you can't compare it to other tablets.

it's not in the same class as laptops in the same price bracket, so the only thing it would compare to are the readers type devices with a nice led color screen and nice browsing capabilities(- flash), and viewing up to 720p h264 video.

the fact is flash is now everywhere, you will encounter sites in the next year or so with flash content. if you buy this device primarily as a browser, you will only get to use it with the select few sites that converted flash in there pages.

in the future this might not be a problem, but if you buy a product that will be obsolete in a year or two max, it might be a big deal.

Right.... 90% of computer users today do little more than surf the net, play games, listen to music, and social networking.

We agree.. I said: " It's a gadget that a true techie won't like because it's underpowered and limiting."

I have absolutely NO use for a tablet unless I can load my own OS, and run the apps I want, and expand on it with SDHC card slot, USB/ESATA (even better). Use it for editing video. I'm NOT the typical "web surfer" who visits social networking sites and plays "farmville" or such garbage. I check email, come here and actually use the computer as a computer.

I suppose a "true techie" could want it as an addition to his/her real computer, but not as a replacement.
I don't want one at all. Not even a little bit.
Then again, I don't want a MAC either.

We received ours yesterday.

It is easily that most efficient tool for anyone who likes information, and quick access to it.

It's sold by Apple, but it is hardly a Mac.

We've had a Lenovo and Dell Netbook.

It is heads and shoulders more powerful, more versatile and more capable than either of those.

Until you've actually used one, I don't see how anyone can call it underpowered and limiting.

But that's my opinion

ATL MEdia - I was referring to the second part of your post, not the first. You said unless they are a techie or want it just because it is a Mac. The "just because it is a Mac" part is what I was referring to, stating that this is appealing to 90% of people.

Amr Rahmy - keep it fair. The $829 model is by far the least popular and most people are looking at $500 for the device, not $800. And the device does far more than "comics and news." Weather, notes, contacts, calendars, board games, magazines, movies on an airplane, ereader for $500 sounds a little different... not to mention thousands of third party apps that add an insane amount of functionality for businesses, consumers, students, hobbysits, etc. Regarding flash, be sure not to undermine the signifinace of what is happening. "A few websites switched" is very unrealistic statement in comparison to the reality of what just happen. On day ZERO over a dozen MAJOR websites are redesigned in HTML5, with many more on the way switch over to HTML5, and for good reason. Beyond the iPad, flash is proven to be one of the top causes for crashes on the web on either PC or Mac. It is also much more processor intensive than HTML5. Anyway, point is, flash is on it's way out, and Apple has accelerated that process rapidly... and really, you have to feel for Adobe. Thanks to the iPad and the resulting shift of major websites to HTML5, many more (big and small) sites will soon follow.

For example, I was excited for Adobe's new Flash Catalyst... but I will not be redesigning my website in flash anymore. Not a chance.

your going to buy something that is mainly for browsing the web without 3g? it's not like it would allow you to connect a usb 3g stick, that's $630

how many movies(720p h264) can you download and store on the 16GB model. if you can't easily connect a flash drive, that's the $730 model at least.

i'm not saying it's a bad product, it's just too consumer-ry. the only thing going for it is the multitouch screen, it's good but not very useful.

it has a very nice led screen with 133ppi, but it limits at 1024x768.

can't really compete with a 12inch netbook or ultra light laptop.

My wife bought one and it's actually pretty damn cool. I can't use for what I do. But it's fast as hell and she loves it. I was a ipad hater at first, now I'm always on the damn thing, much faster than the HP laptop we bought a few months ago.

Amr - you really ought to check out some of the apps and what industry folk are saying. It is much more than for surfing the web, and wifi hotspots are a dime a dozen nowadays. Be careful on comments like saying the "only thing going for it is the multitouch screen, it's good but not very useful" - it shows that you aren't really aware of what the device and software is capable of. I'm not a mac fanboy, in fact I have I own 4 PCs... but the multitouch hardware and software is absolutely phenomenal. On a 9.7" screen you don't need more than 1024x768! That's VERY good pixel density. 15" monitors have always been standard at 1024x768. If you really think - even as a techie - that it can't compete with a netbook I think you really owe it to yourself to reexamine the intended use scenarios and take the device for a test drive and research some 3rd party apps.

I am not saying it is the device for you Amr, everyone has different needs. It sounds like for your particularly use scenarios , a different platform might be better. But there's two undeniable things - (1) you haven't given it a fair chance, and (2) your needs are in a small minority. The iPad is in fact a brilliant device and will seriously change the way many people compute and enjoy technology on a daily basis.

I want that now! But with the original Final Fantasy and Zelda games I played as a kid!

It's Easter, pretty sure they are closed today... hope you didn't leave yet

Errr, note to Apple.

Don't have a major product release where the stores are closed on the 2nd day of it.

Yea, I left and went up there. They had one in the window, it looks pretty cool.

This thread is just too funny...keep at it boys! :2vrolijk_08:
(I'll just stick with my iTouch...it fits in my pocket and does all the same stuff)

iPad users... please check out my free app "iZaza"!
