Another snowboarding video

Nice vid....LOVED the sharpness.

Can you tell how you got it so sharp....did you do anything special in compressor?.....or is that just an advantage of having your own site/server/QT/flash et al. (as opposed to some of us broke folk who use the crappy & overcompressed, but free, Youtube).

Also....what did you shoot it with?
DVX-100 (of course.....in the DVX only thread)
24pa (or 60i)?

Any particular settings.....as I too would like to achieve such wonderful CRISPNESS one day

again, great job

oh yea....my ribs hurt from watching that (and NOT from laughing)

Hey there,

Most of the settings are stock F6 scene setting; 24PA setting that is.

The crispness is two things: I am always in manual focus, which not every snowboard photographer does. And the second is taking the time to encode the file right and always playing with the different settings as I encode them. I hate YouTube and Google Video, so if I'm paying for the bandwith myself I really want it to look right.

Hey Grenade I just double checked and its actually a 16 gig. So if you have a laptop, that might be verry dooable.

That's true, and it would work if I had an assistant to help carry that stuff around with me. But I'm kind of a one-man show.

Have you looked into the Firestore drive? How well does that work for people on the go?

Now that you bring up the subject of an external drive, I read that you can actually use an iPod to store your files from a P2 card. Like you could shoot on the P2 card, then transfer them to the iPod for storage. I'll see if I can find the link. As far as carying stuff, wouldn't it be pretty easy to just put a laptop in your pack? I know i would.

The problem with taking the laptop out of the pack to transfer is that it might get wet. That might be a problem. Also those file transfers are hard to do when you're on the hill, cause you don't really have a table or a place to do it. I'd just have to hunker down in the snow.

But I'll look into the iPod thing. I think within a year or two you'll see some kickass hi-def cameras with slots for hard drives.

Yeah. Well I was thinking more along the lines of shooting for 40 minutes with the 16 gig, go into the lodge or back to the truck or whatever and transfering the footy, then going out and doing it all again. I know alot of places have like $5 "crap check" services so you could just put your laptop in a spare pack, zippypoo goes the zip and you could just keep comming back and dumping your footy. Just an idea.

Actually that's not a bad idea... I thought P2 cards would only hold 15 minutes uncompressed at a time.

If you are shooting 720Pn, then at 24fps you will get about 40 minutes. Obviously, just as with film, the storage space will decrees with higher frame rate. But still, its not that bad, considering you can review your shots while your on the lift and get rid of obvious bad ones right away. Plus, you will have a 16GB card to start off with, and you could get another one whenever you have the budget.
