Andrew Kramer talks a bit about the 7D..,.

Review was horrible. Does he not no that the 7d codec surpasses the ex1. He does not no enough about the cam to give any review on it.

reem12 I think he mentions that. He said it was just his first impression and not meant to be an in depth review.

Toward the end he just starts sounding like a bad SNL sketch:

I've got fleas just kidding I got hair lice just kidding I've got blood sucking leeches I'm just kidding my fleas have lice I'm just kidding the 7D is powered by leeches I'm just kidding.

He is monster on AE though. I could care less about any camera review he gives, as long as he keeps putting up FREE tutorials he's alright with me.

Agreed, Richard. Anyone unfamiliar with him, please go to videocopilot.net.

I've bought a lot of his plugins, etc, but the free tutorials he gives have made me far more money than he will ever receive from me, even though I buy nearly all of his stuff.

Question: Doesn't he also do work for major motion films? I thought I seen his name in the credits of an action film in recent years.

If he doesn't he needs to because some of the work he does for us looks better than some big budget hollywood pictures. Wolverine comes to mind. That sucked every which way to sunday.:Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Ok…now I remember. He did the opening credits for the recent blockbuster Star Trek movie.

EDIT: I'm too slow. Thanx

The 7D's codec does not surpass the EX1. It could have, it should have, but in reality it doesn't. The 7D (and the 5D and the GH1) have a very limited version of h.264 which gives up much of its efficiency. If they had full implementations of AVCHD, they would all exceed the EX1, but the limited implementation (no B-frames) makes the codec far less robust. The 7D and 5D throw bandwidth at the problem to try to make up for it, and they do better than the GH1's lower bandwidth, but none of them are truly a match for the EX1's codec.

Maybe in the next generation they'll have full codec implementation, and at that point your statement would be true, but as of today's products they're not.

Don't know the tech about "limited" versions of h.264 but I'll say from experience the 7D buries the EX1/3 in image quality and look. We just finished day 3 of a 100% 7D feature film (2 7D - all L Series glass) and the images are beyond our wildest expectations. The quality of how the Canon's handle light is way beyond ANY camcorder at ANY price. We used an EX1 for a scene on our last feature (www.alettertodad.com) and it was the toughest scene to color time because of the limited codec - this Canon stuff is a dream to time because there is so much more"visual" info in the scene. Skin looks great, no blown highlights - shootng at the beach all day yesterday with NO ND and the images are the closest thing to 35mm I've seen this side of an F35. Maybe that 20%+ increase in bandwidth over the EX1 is worth something.

I think these DSLR's are gonna get better and better and the days of the clunky camcorder are numbered.

I think you're both correct. What I beieve Barry is talking about is the version of H.264 the 7D/5Dll is using. It's not as efficient as it could be. But because the sensor is way better in these DSLR's than the EX-1 then that fact makes up for the weaker implemented codec. I guess if you were to put two EX-1's side by side , one with the 7D's codec and the other with its native codec the native codec would beat out the newer one.

He designed the main title for J.J. Abrams "Star Trek". It's not on his IMDB page yet (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3135304/), but it's in the credits:

He's such a good bloke. Doesn't over price his products and gives so much knowledge away for FREE! If ever I make a film, I definitely have to give him a "Special Thanks" credit! He's taught me so much! Legend!

I'm also loving the images the 7D makes, with one exception. The high contrast. I'm finding it extremely difficult to get a flatter image, even when using Neutral. It's still very contrasty, which gives the impression of limited dynamic range.
The other thing is how it handles highlights. It does it in a very video like way, very harsh transition. One good thing in the EX1 is the ability to manipulate the image specially the gamma, which is not possible with the 7D. Doing it on the canon software has proven useless and actually worst than just shooting with neutral since it causes extra noise. How are you getting around these problems? Or are you going for a high contrast video type of look?
