Anamorphic Shootout

Nick Cave Video clip shot with anamorphic lenses

Nick Cave Video clip shot with anamorphic lenses

Maybe not the right thread, but apart from the fact that I really love Nick Cave and this song in particular, I think it has a fantastic clip here.
Strong story, nicely filmed, but also on the aesthetic side: lots of grain, flares and anamorphic look.
Let me know if someone has more details about the technical stuff (who shot the clip, cameras and lenses used, etc).
Geez I might have listened to this song 20 consecutive times :)
Thumbs up from me.

This is my second test of my Carl Zeiss Moller Anamorphot 63/2x CinemaScope.I'm still using it hand-held infront of my Canon 50mm 1.8fII on a 550D body cause I need to fabricate a custom 52mm to 68/69 or something ring. After the first tests(mostly in my room) I've found out that I have focusing problem and by accident I've found out a anamorphic test video on vimeo about changing the aperture to 5.6/8/9 helping the focusing on shorter distance. This is shot with 5.6 as I recall. Also noticed that lowering the aperture makes smaller flares.I'm new in this and I'm interested in learning about shooting anamorphic in depth.Cheers!

can anybody recommend or share how are you watching squeezed picture on external monitors / viewfinders? how to desqueeze? what monitor? 1,3x 1,5x 2x desqueeze solution?

Never had a problem working with the squeezed picture on the monitor. It's proportional so rule of thirds is still a third of the screen in both axes. Everything is still framed in its relational position.

In the past when I had a monitor that didn't unsqueeze I found that the 4:3 marker was a decent rough safety zone if you are going to crop your footage.

SmallHD, Cineroid, Kinotehnik, and Convergent all offer monitors with anamorphic de-squeezing features. The SmallHDs in particular are great because you can set custom parameters that allow you to monitor in 1.5x while you shoot in 2x. Then in post you can work in a 1.5x sequence and its as if you were shooting in 1.5x all along. Pretty nifty.

Maybe already discussed here, but I am confused.
I have been using final cut pro for editing anamorphic footage so far and had a workflow which apparently worked.
Now I have recently switched to Premiere on a pc and I have an anamorphic project to edit. Shot with a 1.5x lens, only a couple of clips are shot spherical and will have to be cropped.
So my question is: what is the best way to edit on a timeline and export the footage. It will be mainly viewed on a tv, converted to dvd :( for some, and maybe occasionally on a projector.
I am tempted to edit unsqueezed and do everything at a later stage, but, I don't know.
And a probably stupid question: why not simply unstretch the clips through the motion effects tab in Premiere? Where is the catch?
Thanks.

Hey Guys. So, I've been hiding a little secret in my cupboard. It's called the Foton Anamorphic lens. I was shocked at how sharp it was shooting with the Canon 24-105 F4.0. Anywho, I'm selling it and I got curious about what other folks experience was with it. Needless to say, I was FLOORED to see a bunch of crazy soft footage. ..and coming from Pros like Timur Civan. So, I know it wasn't user error.

So, it turns out my secret is even bigger than I thought! So, the secret is to pair the anamorphic lens adapter with the Canon 24-105 F4.0 and.....BANG! POW! PRESTO CHANGE-OOO! Sharp footy at your service. BTW, the zoom portion of the combo works too! I don't have it "rigged up", and won't get a chance anytime soon, but, I do have pics of me changing the focal length and still being in focus. (Waiting for them to load to Flickr...I'll update this in a sec.)

Here's the Flickr Set: http://www.flickr.com/photos/2746926...7638422060435/

Enjoy!

I'll embed a few here too. :)
UPDATE: Hey...go look at the flickr link above, the uploaded "compressed" these and they look horrible. So bad, in fact, I'll delete them so people don't think this lens sucks. Anywho...Cheers Everyone!

I think Timur had a badly set up Foton zoom and Anamorphic adapter... it's more to do with the Foton zoom itself being badly collimated. If I remember, Timur mentioned that it was an OCT-18 mount that was hacked around.

The Foton zoom and 1A (front) anamorphic attachment was used for years in Russia (from the early 60's through to the mid 80's)... this is a 1965 vintage :)

You mention you're selling it - any links to your sale?

Just getting ready to post it now. (I'll post it in a sec)
What did you think of the Flickr images (as far as sharpness)? (Just curious)

looks good. can you unstretch them for us? what aperture were those shot at? how much is the lens?

Here's the link for the auction. (No reserve btw)
Starting at 1999, buy it now 2999. Better hurry, lol. It literally make me sick to my gut to sell this thing. Big plans for Christmas, ...what can I say?

I can't seem to see the Flickr pics as the folder is marked as private.

But my experience (in general) of the Foton zoom and Foton A are pretty good :)

You might want to note on the auction that this Foton A will not pair with a Foton 37-140 zoom. It's missing an essential collar section that that allows it to connect to teh Foton zoom (and makes the unit single focus).

I believe you got this from Sovjak or one of the other Russian dealers? I was looking at this one a while ago too - but the lack of the focus collar connection meant it couldn't mate (at all).

However, the condition on the photos from the seller looked excellent (I saw it before it went on Ebay)... and your comments have backed that up too... it does really look in great condition.

The diopters are also unique to the 1960's vintage Foton-A's (the design was changed in the late 60's/early 70's - and removed the slot mechanism at the top of the unit - and replaced it with a slide/clip on design for the diopters).

I'm sure it'll go quickly!
